On lack of promo: super strange, pretty limp. Definitely feels like this is a contractual obligation and/or Domino have just given them leeway to get it done with. I really do hope something bigger is on the way but I'm not holding out hope. If we don't get one proper video then something's fully amiss.
On the Q&A's: I'll be attending one and have about 8000 questions to ask, but if I get picked I'll focus on the sequencing and perhaps which TS songs they feel would've been done the most justice if recorded in person.
On IIN vs TS: I've felt all along that the songs are better and after my tenth listen... yeah. It's a way better album than Skiffs. No question. Just every aspect of it, even the (in my eyes) odd sequencing.
On live vs studio: I feel like 90% of it is super faithful to the boots and has been nicely spruced up. I basically feel the opposite about the TS tracks, so this is a massive result. As has been said ad infinitum, this has taken too long and the boots definitely fucked it for me. We had such a huge amount of time to form opinions, over listen, get used to certain one time quirks and fantasise about what could've been. Not their fault but it's unfortunate. This happened to me with CHz, so next time I'm swearing off them.
Alt tracklist:
1. King's Walk (cut out the last two "this whole world"s and just end at 4:21)
2. Soul Capturer (single version)
3. Broke Zodiac
4. Magicians From Baltimore
5. All The Clubs Are Broken
6. Stride Rite
7. Gem & I
8. Defeat
9. Genie's Open
Just feel like that would flow so much better but hey. It's a strong 9 for me either way.
Aaaaaaaaaaaand my thoughts per track:
Soul Capturer - Biggest surprise for me. Was lukewarm at best on the boots but this has truly come alive and I love it. So much energy and such an excellent outro. New details come through on each listen. The Feels vibe is less so than the live iteration but I'm fine with that because it feels new. Thank god for those drum embellishments. On paper a really odd choice for opener but in practice I can scarcely place it elsewhere (unless Kings opened). Could take or leave the studio chatter.
Genie's Open - I initially got everybody's criticisms despite this still being one of my top three or four of the era at its core. It has less flare than the live versions and I think it may be the only one that has suffered in the studio. Having said that, it's still absolutely brilliant in my eyes. They smashed the first two sections. Perfect clarity, loads of pretty little details. It's just the last section that lets it down a tad. Had that bit been 4bpm faster and bumped Avey's eeeeeeeee's up about 2db in the mix it'd be as close to perfect as possible. Given how that section ended up though, I'm glad it's not the closer (which I was always hoping for). Again, still a superb song and I'm liking the recording the more I listen to it instead of the boots.
Broke Zodiac - Hit it out the park. Perfect version. Captured everything great about the live track and made it pop. Good lord the chorus shines. Yes, on the surface it's a kinda cutesy little Panda song but man it's as good as it could possibly be for what it is.
Magicians From Baltimore - Another home run. Couldn't really be better. Always been an epic and they did it so much justice. I'm glad it wasn't the opener in the end as well, its placing actually works so nicely as an early-mid behemoth. Someone referenced those guitar bends as Geo butt sliding into the picture and boy oh boy what a butt slide it is. The vocals are the best on the album I think. Only minor critiques would be Avey's "woo" at 6:09 would've been great as a "WAAOO" a la live version, and the pianos in the latter third are a tad too high in the mix for me, making them sound a little bit Jimmy Buffet. Never listened to a Jimmy Buffet song but that's what I imagine. Maybe Dave Matthews? Dunno, just someone with a shark tooth necklace, pink shorts, crocs and a pot belly.
Defeat - Best song in history with worst tracklist placement in history unfortunately. Kills the flow and will be skipped by 85% of listeners I reckon. Regardless, it's still unbelievable that this exists. I hear what people are saying about the length but it still works so so so so so so well for me. Only thing I would've changed is Avey's vocals in parts - too dry in the first section and the delivery in the first and much of the third section is a bit too.. Not sure how to articulate it. Strained? Anyway whatever it's ridiculously good and still moves me beyond words.
Gem & I - Jarring after Defeat but gets us back in. Proud member of team bum bum right here. Basically everything I said for BZ applies here. Best version, embellishments a plenty without overwhelming the mix, the chorus shines. Couldn't be better.
Stride Rite - And again. Best version of what it could have been. An incredible song and easily now my favourite Deakin-penned tune. Heartbreaking in the best possible way. I do agree with what some people said a few days ago in that having Avey harmonising with him instead of him self-harmonising would've been nice but I don't care. Huge late-album highlight without question.
All The Clubs Are Broken - It's pretty good but at this moment my least favourite track and feels quite out of place, though that may just be because I'm so used to the others. Well recorded, enjoyable lyrics, very enjoyable vocal delivery, nicely mixed. Not exciting or adventurous in any way and could've been 1:20 in length to the same effect. I will say the use of drum machine claps is a cool new thing for them and I'd be interested to hear more in than vein. The (presumably) JUNO-60 organ sounding lines throughout make it very MGMT/Tame Impala (to make a few lazy comparisons) and I just think they can do better than that but whatever.
King's Walk - I've always adored this song and once again, they did the best version of it that could've been possible. Exceptional production and quality. Tidied up but not enough to make it too clean. Really happy with the lack of autotune in the end, even though I used to dig that a lot. Just Avey making weird sounds with his mouth. Awesome. Yes, I think the placement is a bit strange but it also works as a comedown.
All in all, I do feel like we have a classic on our hands but I don't think it will be digested well by the music press and due to the lack of promo, it'll get forgotten about almost immediately by everyone outside our circle. Bit of a tragedy but these things happen. Some of the best art isn't necessarily meant to be adored, understood or even consumed for the most part. It's their best recorded project since Fall Be Kind to my ears, and there's not much more I could've asked for.
Love you lot. It's been a hell of a ride.

I’m super perplexed by the TS hate. These albums are very much two sides of the same coin to me and the production is not that radically different to my ear. Maybe the drums and I do love the vocal production on now. Noah’s voice in particular sounds amazing. That being said the songs themselves are intrinsically linked to each other the quality of one set versus the other is inconsequential they’re sisters if IIN is a 9/10 TS is still easily a 8.5/10. The only other comparison that comes to mind at the moment is Kid A and Amnesiac in that they were gestated at the same time from the same creative soup

Still a baffling single choice to me. I think it works in the context of the album but I don’t think it’s a particularly memorable or catchy song.
I’m with you on this. It’s a bit of a “nothing song”, relatively speaking of course, for a song that is supposed to get people excited about the album.
I haven’t heard the freebird as I’m waiting for full release. My thoughts, as someone who has not listened to the boots, is that it is a very breezy little jam. It reminds me of the kind of music you would hear playing on the street in a super touristy area in the middle of a city in Europe. In general that is a bad thing, as that kind of jazzy, worldy type music tends to bore me, but I do enjoy this song. It does sound like it pairs well with a wine over sunset. It doesn’t exactly blow me away though. As with all songs in this new era, I am loving the production and the “space” though. Can’t wait to listen to the full thing.

I really like the Gem lyrics, nice to get clarity after "crack open another beer" being the only thing i remember about this song. Definitely reads as a song about the band. "Another tip to the golden years, we're probably in it" is great in general but feels like it really encapsulates Noah and the other guys mindsets in relation to creating music. Kind of just keep going and making your thing, these years will be looked back upon fondly even if it doesn't seem like it in the moment.

Drove a few hours for a trip over the last few days and got some proper IIN listening in. Some thoughts-
Record is incredible. So addicting. Just a joy from start to finish. I listened to the demos relentlessly and would give anything to hear this with fresh ears. But such is life.
Idk if its the vinyl rip but does anyone feel like the vox are a little suppressed? Instruments sound very loud esp on Genies and Magicians.
Magicians and Broke Zodiac are initial highlights as I didn't listen to those demos much. So I dont have the demoitis with them.
I'm skipping defeat most of the time :/ I wish it was at the end. I think the transition to Gem and I is quite startling. Puts me in a trance and then the drums a the start of gem and i slap me in the face.
I wish panda sang high in the chorus of Gem and I like he did in the later boots. But all in all I adore the song and think it might be my fav.
Stride Rite feels like dekin held back a little, but thats fine. Its beautiful.
ATCAB - wish it was all clubs are broken so the acronym was a properACAB such a fun song. Real joy to listen to after Stride.
Kings Walk is a great closer, but feels like a song that my non anco fan friends would sing to do an anco impression. mainly because of the EEEHHHHHHHss.

Album sounds great at night either on headphones or speakers. Definitely a night album for me... I've tried playing it in the afternoon and it doesn't click as much for me. Half the album contains good sunny daytime songs, but I can't for the life of me enjoy Magicians or Defeat when there's even a lick of sun. Kings and Stride are the other two songs that are enhanced by moonlight.
Falls in the 8.5-9/10 range for me, a clear career highlight/band achievement and solidly in the second tier of their discography after their magical 2004-2009 masterpiece run. Sits right next to HCTI/Campfire Songs/Spirit/Danse in that second tier of greatness... not quite transcendental all-time magic, but verrrrry good AOTY-contender stuff.
Happy to see the first review be a glowing 9/10 "best AC album in a long time" kind of vibe. I know what the critics think doesn't really matter, but it's always nice when you get some critics aligning with the fans and going a lil bit crazy in love for something.
When I get my vinyl, I'd wager a lot of times I'll just play the C-side on its own, and other times just play A, B, and D. It's a bit of choose your own adventure. In other cases, maybe I only play A, B and C, with Defeat being the "closer."

Yeah totally. I don't know how he does it, but Noah's lyrics are really unique.
One of Avey's hallmark lyric-writing bits is how he blends syllables and creates quasi-homophones for stuff, or just substitutes words in ways that make the descriptions more psychedelic or nonsensical but retaining the "real" part, if you squint. Noah accomplishes a similar thing, but less by substitution and more by omission, if that makes sense. His lyrics are so minimal, and the words and phrases he does use are usually so weird that understanding their meaning requires close reading and thinking about them, even if he's using common words. I've always thought of them as blurry, like you might pick up on the vibe when they pass by you, but other than specific words or phrases that stand out as very concrete, you have to deliberately "mine" them for their meaning

I gave in and listened to gem & i. I'm a big fan of the "bum bum," it adds a lot. It's still surreal for me to hear these songs in studio quality after such a long stretch of my life where they existed as ephemeral bootleg recordings

Very well put.

Love this description/analysis of Noah's lyrical writing style. Love the 'blurry' idea. It is so distinctive. I always appreciate how economical he is with his words too. And peculiar word choices.
Some great examples:
"A cat up a tree, so spry"
"A slip of a piece of fabric, gives me hijinks"
"When there are dangerous times I'll spot them up"
"Beasts don't have a sec' to think"
"Sick has to eat well too"

Album is legitimate. Holy shit just vibing on speakers this is so tight. Gem & I is the ultimate grower for me. I am officially defecting from anti to pro bums. Never get sick of hearing Clubs. I can't believe how much I like Kings, It's an excellent closer, surprisingly. Defeat I think has become their best song for me, it has real staying power. Tracklist is not only good, but outstanding. Their voices meld beautifully on this one, just like tongs and mpp. I have yet to overplay this and it just gets better.
Re: "Isn't It Now?" - aka will Defeat be on the album???
Animal Collective announce new album ‘It Isn’t Now’ and detail listening parties
The album, out this month, is being previewed by first single 'Gem & I'
Did NME just not get the memo or are they that bad at research? This feels super weird coming from a publication as big as them.

My 2 cents
Incredible record. I can agree with everyone else claiming it's an instant classic and works so extremely well with the best of their catalogue...But...I kind of only feel that way for tracks 1-7....8 and 9 are a little up in the air for me and I'm hoping I come around to them soon.
I feel like the entirety of the album happens up to track 7, and it's extraordinary. Then ACAB is like an intermission into a B-side track that they really wanted to include. I can't shake this feeling. But I'm waiting until the official release to go really hard on it and give it a proper listen on a short hike or a bit of edibles. We'll see.
Nonetheless, an easy 9/10 for me in their discography. Glad everyone is enjoying it.

Defeat coming out of Magicians really is like I'm entering the "dream land", then Gem snaps me back to reality

i hate being this type of dude, one who ascribes a specific meaning to songs through the lyrics (mostly because it's cooler to just have whatever meaning you'd like and find), but i definitely see magicians ->- defeat as being a part of the same convo between the narrator and the recipient of his desire, whether it's just nostalgia or an actual person. but they definitely seem to be pining for similar things and ruminating on aging and growth and death, w magicians this very zoomed in/personal view and defeat kind of being focused on broader, bigger picture. it's hard for me to listen to them separate now.
