I've been putting together a playlist of stuff that potentially influenced 'Isn't It Now?' or at least stuff that it reminds me of (some of which is awesome stuff that others have mentioned). Would love suggestions from anyone for songs that you think would work well.

Fantastic playlist, it made my morning. You nailed the vibe.

Nice! Glad you enjoyed it and you feel like it captures the vibe. Still keen for any suggestions. Feel like I have quite got it all covered yet. Close but not quiiiite.

Oh and Astral Traveling by Pharoah Saunders cause it was sampled for the Music Box performance but I can’t remember which song atm

Down down down (“Royal”)

Great playlist!

May I suggest something by hurdy gurdy virtuoso Valentin Claustrier?

at this exact moment its the last few minutes of genie, the jaunty "sea of light" part i find myself humming that constantly, that, or when the drums finally come in on stride rite. everything happening in that song is incredible and incredibly affective but jesus christ that song is so good. and this winter's sorrow's hard i know / but we've been through worse kills me. and then the trilling piano notes just a bit after the drum break. yeah its that not sea of light hah.

okay it might also be noah hitting the high note on "straaaaanger" in broke zodiac

I'm still impressed about the lack of activity from the band this far into September. If that thing about Gem and I was true I'd guess it'll most likely come out this Wednesday, it's around a month since the last video posted on Yt, and it's likely to be the last single

it's so weird! it felt like they do much press for skiffs + i'm super curious to hear what they have to say about this album

Some little sounds I've been enjoying:

- the "hold HAAAAANDS" (?) part of King's Walk
- that last loud hum of the hurdy on Broke Zodiac
- the opening minute of Genie's Open, and the delay on Panda's "Sea LIGHT" at the end

All three are awesome moments. also, the final line of Genies is so much fun. Never get sick of it. Still not entirely sure of the lyrics though! "I wouldn't have shouldn't have walked in a careful Lea"?

Stride is seeping deeper and deeper into my psyche. The way it ebbs and flows is so graceful yet the delivery feels so raw and honest. Love the high note at the very end (that Deaks every so slightly misses, which adds to its appeal).

"Hold HAAAAANNDS!" is absolutely one of mine atm too. Such a rad little addition to the studio version. I also love the bit halfway through where Panda has a little solo run before the other two join back in.

Couple of others for me:
- NEIIIGGHHHBBOOUURRRRRRRSS
- the awkward timing of Deakin singing 'sun' on the first pre-chorus of Gem

I also

one of my favorite parts of new album experiences is the period of time after the initial obsession/rush of album listens when i let the album sit in my mind for a bit without relistening... i've gone 5-6 days without listening to the album and instead have had the pleasure of 'remembering the songs' in my mind...i love the way the mind creates its own networks and biases and narratives. there's a bit of manipulation through reinforcement of concepts that my brain wants to remember this album by:

the album is a stoner drift with Panda pops. It’s 1970. The final Velvet Underground album with Lou Reed just released, and we’ve just ascended out of the first four-year pink cloud daytrip of psychedelic music's advent. A shaggy-haired man adorned in a hemp sweater and tattered brown pants sits hunched over a game of Dungeons & Dragons. Beside him is a stack of waterlogged and dog-eared books – Narnia, Tolkien, Oz, Earthsea, Leaves of Grass, Wrinkle in Time. His eyes are obscured by a haze of mushroom clouds, and one final bong rip sends him into a delirious, shape-shifting dream in slow motion.

As if flipping through pages of time, he hears several voices talking, a calmly disorienting collage of ideas collapsing upon one another. The voices scurry around in his mind like rats, the voices chew upon his dried bubblegum brain. A sudden entrance of drums momentarily jolts him out of his dream, dangling eyes flickering like a lightning bug before his soul is taken from his body.

And so for the next hour, old Levi here – or whatever his name is – walks stoned and soulless upon a four-inch wide piece of tape that goes around and around and around again, on a little Tascam machine. The first song is hypnotic in rhythm while the second is hypnotic in melody, a circular hum and buzz which dissolves into an ecstatic mantra. The former being a miniature fantasy epic for those (still) sober, and the latter being a stoner’s seasick anthem while their capsized boat melts below the ocean floor into the molten core center of the earth. A quick bounce of empathy and clarity leads into a murkier, spacier and ambient sound world. “Magicians From Baltimore” crystallizes into a prog rock song with fuzz bass, multi-part harmonies and saloon piano.

The core and centerpiece of this trip is the 22-minute “Defeat” which is a patient and poetic sprawl of reflection. Winding in slow-motion, a series of images past, present and future ooze across the screen as emotions ebb and flow and swell and collapse. An inner struggle which speaks a universal language, spiritual sludge and psychic destruction: the trip ends in despair, long-suffering, a slow disintegration of voice and sound. The spiritual fever breaks, and the metaphorical whale spits Levi to shore with a loud and sudden belch, now extracted from darkness he cracks open a beer and fuels his mushroom trip with a few cold ones. and it goes like this, psychedelic, the most retro AC album, vibey and autumnal woods, talking trees in an old growth forest and buzzing Tinkerbells.... Peter Pan on a lifelong Fantasia quest alongside Frodo in the Yellow Submarine... Syd Barrett producing Beach Boys most lo-fi mess of a psych album in 1968.

Avey has been doing the "hold hands" bit live in king's walk. It's also in the tiny desk version, IIRC.

My favourite little moment is when the rim shot in genie's changes to snare hits and the second part starts. Gets me really pumped up!

That melody that starts at 5:20 in Genie's Open. Almost sounds like a muted steel drum or something? Sounds so blissful.

Holy shit, never noticed this before! Swear it wasn't in other live versions I've heard.

Still a baffling single choice to me. I think it works in the context of the album but I don’t think it’s a particularly memorable or catchy song.

Those metallic groans that sound like airplanes overhead on the chorus of the first section of Magicians
Deakin’s very raw vocals when he says “*Let* them go” just before the first pre-chorus of Stride
The whimsical little ascending flute flourish on ACAB makes me think of both Loch Raven and one of the sections from MGMT’s Siberian Breaks
The synth that plays on the second half of Genie’s that sounds underwater/genuinely like compressed hold music on a phone line but in a good way?

no music video (or even lyric video!) for any of the three singles they are really not being shy about going through the motions on this rollout lol. it makes sense, but i would even take something akin to this fanmade gem & i visualizer over just subtly animating the cover art again

i think i have the exact opposite take as willie hehe, song works much better for me as a single than as a defeat followup, still think it's outclassed by broke zodiac but it's a little packet of joy nonetheless

Broke Zodiac sounds nothing like an AC song to me. The main melody feels like a Christian singalong.. sounds like a song I would end up hearing too much as a kid and the saccharine feeling of the melody would turn into a horrible feeling of boredom and regret. That’s just what it reminds me of lol

hi! not much of a poster but long time lurker and loving this album.

Call it wishful thinking, but rather than bemoan the lack of visuals / promo, I can’t help but dream up that that part of the Domino budget (if any) is going to something yet to be announced. Full visual album? Music Box or recent tour concert films? Anyone have a dream scenario of how that all plays out?

Magicians from Baltimore is truly iconic, like in a 20th century rock kind of way. It feels like dad rock but the undeniable kind of dad rock. Music for the permanent cultural memory. Pretty far and away the best track on the album

a lot of the really emotionally operative melodies on this album sound like other kinds of recognizable music. There’s still an AC flare but I found myself thinking “oh they’re doing that emotional register/landscape… interesting”
