i feel like it'd be a cool/convenient idea if we could differentiate the good quality boots from the not so good ones (the professional quality vs the fan recorded ones) like maybe we could highlight the good quality ones in a different color or just put (HQ) next to them or something. only suggesting this cause sometimes i want to go back and listen to some older live stuff but am never sure which one is the best sounding and i just end up downloading a bunch of them til i find one that sounds the best..... idk

I ripped, split, and tagged the new Pitchfork upload (02/01/18) at 320 MP3 and it sounds really nice. I guess Pitchfork took some time mix the performance. You can grab it here:

Any idea if this will ever surface?

I used to program for WKCR and I'm still a student at Columbia so I could probably try and search for this recording if it's still there but I kind of doubt it is

also Geo is right, the new music department is seemingly exactly the same as when he was a student here

The show Geo is referring to is called Live Constructions, and we record the days where we actually have musicians in. I think what he means with the bolded part is that whoever heard that performance heard it because the recording of it was aired years after the fact
I programmed that show for a semester, and most days we didn't have any guests so I either played some shows we had archived or I just played like an hour of experimental music that wasn't live. Although I think now there are guests pretty frequently so that doesn't happen
That said, I have no idea how far back the archives go so it's likely it's not there, but who knows. Do we know anything more about the context for this performance? I know very little about Come Winter other than the fact that it was an AC side project

just did a deep dive in columbia web archives and couldn't quite find anything, although i found that rutgers' assistant dean of graduate medical education was a transfigured night DJ in the mid-90s. seems like something on foot is gonna be more useful

Yeah, if it is around, it's probably buried somewhere in the station. There's still a lot of old recordings there, I'm just not sure if that one survived
I did Transfigured Night for a few semesters and Geo's description of it is still completely accurate. Really fun show, but going on air from 2am-6am gets exhausting (even with Alvin Lucier to keep you company)

yeah it's fantastic. so exciting to know there's still high quality stuff being uncovered out there. my first assumption was this was from a tv broadcast in classic euro style but this looks like venue video to me? was this ever on anyone's radar? i can't even find any references to it on various gigography sites but saw some mentions on french blogs

looked at the youtube channel, it's a new channel that, from what i can infer, is someone in paris who films concerts for fun. the other vids on the channel are other concerts in paris from the 2000s. guess someone decided to upload their back catalog of live vids.

So I finally got around to looking for this today with my friend. We weren't able to find it, but we did find some other DAT recordings (from other artists) from around the same time period (00-02). The archives aren't really well organized anymore, especially for the experimental stuff. It's possible that it is somewhere in the station, but if so it's not gonna be easy to find. I'll probably search for it again at some point later this semester

Just a brief message to say thanks to jfw7 and everyone who ever contributed a recording or piece of info to this absolutely glorious thread and archive. It's been more important and life-changing to me than any collected works of art I've ever been lucky enough to experience. Thank you doesn't even come close. X
