crazy idea: two AC albums in the works either back to back or concurrently?
you've got
1. geo saying they are planning to work on a new album based on the music box set
2. panda and avey both playing new music and saying that they could end up on AC releases
3. these new panda and avey jams don't seem to vibe with the music box set, yet sound like they could go well together
maybe they'll record the music box set, then work on another album based on the more recently performed tracks? record one, write and rehearse the other, tour a combination of the two? there was some overlap where panda was working on buoys and homies at the same time. two different sounds. maybe the trio records the music box set early summer, then panda joins and they work on the second one? would be pretty sick
fun to speculate

honestly yeah you could be onto something. It definitely sounds like they have enough material that they could pull it off
I'd probably prefer if they just focused their efforts on a single album although it would be kinda incredible if they pulled a Microcastle-Weird Era like that. no matter what just excited to see what this era holds

yeah totally. wouldn't want them to muddy the waters too much. but a back to back type deal could work well tho. makes you wonder, maybe getting together they might figure hey, we're all here now, might as well make the most of it, bang out two albums lol. of course domino would space them out like buoys and homies i'm sure. i'm much more interested in them recording music box set than moving onto newer stuff tho. i'm confident they'll at least record the real special ones from that set one way or the other. not recording defeat/magicians from baltimore would be like not recording banshee beat, unthinkable lol

iirc a lot of the new deak songs were more electronically driven too, probably would fit in well w/the new avey and panda stuff as well.

I dunno they never recorded the glasslands epic or sponge luke, which are at the same caliber. hopefully all the music box stuff gets recorded but I could see some of it being tabled, you never know with these boys

Any time I lose hope in anything, I remember Dave saying Midnight Special has been recorded.

I'm betting that everything being worked on now will all go into one album, but also I wouldn't be surprised if the Music Box material ends up sounding vastly different by the time we hear it again.

The thing I love most about the Music Box stuff is what it represents, namely a return to the dynamics of guitar, drums and piano based music. From ST through to SJ, you have three completely different sounding guitar records, each one an all timer. Buoys is PB's best since PP. Saturdays is (aside from Laughing Hieroglyphic) the best thing Dave has done since Pullhair Rubeye (with Midnight Special coming from a similarly amazing place). First and foremost, their music at its deepest and most expressive is most often built on guitars (and piano). Go all the way back to the start. April, Alvin, La Rapet, Essplode, Doggy, Pride and Fight, Lablakely, Hey Light, Infant, Slippi. It always was.

i disagree, while i also love glasslands and sponge luke, as amazing as they are, those felt more off the cuff and not as fully formed, more like 'ideas' or sketches of songs, whereas most of the music box stuff felt more fully realized / have more substance, so i feel like the band would view them differently
re: hellomark/stanshant, agree w all. i just hope the music box stuff remains more organic sounding and doesn't get over worked, the songwriting itself is good enough that they don't need much tinkering/additions
re: the two album idea, ultimately i just can't see something like playing the long game paired on the same album as defeat, it's like imagining an album with did you see the words and natural selection together, just doesn't make any sense. but yeah like you said hellomark, they could adapt the music box stuff accordingly, but i hope it remains organic for reasons stan said

idk, spirit they vanished is one of their most visceral songs and is synth based. but the way they manipulate drums/keys/guitars is insanity

“Manipulate” can have a bad connotation, I do not think the boys do anything in bad faith with their instruments

I guess because they're just a couple stray tracks as opposed to a whole album so I feel like it's less likely I'll get attached to them. I don't really have a methodical approach to this tho lol. I try my best to hold off from listening to unreleased material because I don't wanna get demoitis but I still listen to random songs here and there without really thinking about it

I don’t think demotis is actually a bad thing... falling in love with a song in demo form requires a certain level of imagination because demos sound like shit. So it’s cooler to have your own idea of what a demo should sound like than just getting to know an official version of a song. For example I’m glad i have the divine version of mercury man that only exists in my head, because it’s better than any studio version could’ve ever been

nice nice. yeah i think buoys was the first ac material i hadn't listened to to death before the album dropped, just cause it didn't resonate with me immediately. only listened to that material once, twice max. made the album experience nice and fresh and i enjoyed that. but it's a lot of fun listening to boots and speculating and getting hyped tho, in and of itself, regardless of how it affects the album experience. i think i only really experienced bad demoitis with some of the greaper material because of the studio production, nothing else really comes to mind. except duplex trip...and def ruined painting with a bit listening to those 30 second amazon samples tho, that's for sure lol

avey tare has almost surpassed panda bear musically. then you bring in geologist. i'm probably bullshit but i would want to nostradamus that animal collective has at least one more watershed album in the tank like the critically acclaimed merriweather post pavilion. who knows though. they are comfortable in their lane. radiohead always probes the depth for cultural greatness where AC seem fine being a cultural subtext.

I disagree. Person Pitch and Down There are both very powerful emotionally, and Come To Your Senses hits me just as hard as Banshee Beat does.

Tangerine Reef showing in Copenhagen (CPH:DOX) but without Avey. Followed by a chat with Deakin and Geo and 30 minute solo sets from both. Can't tell if TR is a performance or just a screening.
https://www.facebook.com/events/369040067000617/
Deakin, Geologist and Colin Foord, hosts a night celebrating the year of the coral reef.
It’s no secret that CPH:DOX and Animal Collective go way back. The band made several appearances in different constellations over the years, and for the next edition of CPH:DOX the band (here in the shape of Deakin and Geologist) will bring their audio visual album “Tangerine Reef”, made in collaboration with Coral Morphologic. The evening will start off with a screening of “Tangerine Reef”, after which a conversation will take place between Deakin and Geologist, who has a master in environmental politics, as well as scientist Colin Foord from Coral Morphologic. The evening will be tied off with a solo concert from both Geologist and Deakin, who released the track Suspend the Time in November, in support of The Ocean Foundation. Colin Foord will be creating visuals for both of the evenings 30 minute-concerts.

in track 10 "time (is)" i believe you can hear noah very briefly around 1:33
track 14 is produced by noah and co.
track 15 "beltway" you can most clearly hear at the end around 1:36 though maybe he's in the harmonies earlier as well?
track 19 "i'm a witness" in the harmonies variably, most clearly around 1:29 to the end (maybe :40ish too?)

I know it's big news that Panda Bear's on the album but I'm actually much more surprised that the former NZ Prime Minister produced a track on there. Guess his son Max inspired him to get into music.
