has anyone been revisiting PW era randomly lately? kinda amazing. the gnip/hounds single, painters, actual LP and song for Danny/Michael remember. I mean like fuck. solid ass era. makes me so hyped for a lounge-jazz/classic rock/autotune/police/steely dan era that is incoming cuz we have this shiny ass fisher price era under their belt complete w/ hella op-1/buchla, some of their craziest beat programming of all time and not a single slap of real delay on any vox. and arguably my fave production/mixing style since mpp.

like when was the last time u put on Bagels in Kiev. On Delay? Summing the Wretch? Side 2 is pretty wintery actually. good lord. idk man.... I dun even kno

also the meeting of the waters/tangerine/psycho actives vol 3/4 mini-era is uh pretty chill as well in all its panda-less-ness. did yal know this band was good?

Imagining an alternate reality where Panda had a son first and struggled with writing House "I just want four walls and Adobe slats for my wife and son!"

that is semi profound. if a single chromosome had occurred at the right time, the band would have had a totally different trajectory and the guys would probably be less financially secure, let's be real. huh

Amazing.

@dio

I listened to PW again recently and enjoyed it like I sometimes enjoy a McDonald's. It's a vapid, hollow experience which pushes some surface level buttons pretty hard. Once in a blue moon, it's something different and refreshing. The piano and kazoo break in On Delay offers a glimpse of humanity but the rest of the album sounds like a plastic Happy Meal toy. The most complimentary thing I can say is that it sounds like a different band. It has absolutely no emotional depth relative to everything else they've ever done. I'm glad they got it out of their system and cleared the cobwebs.

fair but sometimes I LOVE mcdonalds toys and the fact they were going for this cerebral, technical beat programming kind of thing with these super rich synth textures to me IS the emotion. and yet I know exactly what you mean. And that's how I normally think of it. On Delay probably is my favorite part of the record for the reason yr saying, and yet I also glimpse a heartbeat in Golden Gal and Recycling. And Panda's zany vibe that Avey is sometimes picking up on just sounds so wild and mutant-y that it has its own weird emotional energy. but yeah I like do feel ya. it just feels sooooooo good on my ears sometimes, better than anything this decade maybe, from them (Along with Buoys kinda) and thats kind of a purely physical-based, visceral reaction, where yeah like some of the cuts on Chz have that old-school style feelsy/SJ-esque emotion.

I do want them to revisit the emotion of the mid-late oughties but it kinda feels like that's where they're headed with their next one, knock on wood. I like the variety.

the like design level and graphic, poppy quality of PW's vibes just really gets me. its so damn bright and colorful but also kinda wild and like deranged sounding. maybe it coulda been more deranged sounding. feels like this wild pop art kind of thing. like it sounds like the way Reapers art looks sorta..maybe a synthetic brightness and verve CAN be emotion. hm idk.

Painting With has a lot of value. A lot of great songs that really could have only been written by AC. Hocus Pocus, Vertical, On Delay, Bagels, Cheeseburgerlers, Golden Gal, Recycling are all great tunes...

Unquestionably one of their "weakest" releases, if you have to qualify it in that way, but I really dig it.

Really the only unequivocally bad thing about it is the Avey variant of the artwork...all that negative space bringin out the negatives in folks' minds

what a studio to live transition tho, songs like summing the wretch and lying in the grass became such behemoths live

This. If they'd toured the material before going into the studio, I think it'd be up there CHz. Still a pretty solid album though as-is.

I've seen them live on every record cycle since the Feels days and I'm of the (likely unpopular) opinion that they've never been as good as they were on those PW tours. Those shows were mind-melting. I've loved every era of the band, but Painting With live was awe-inspiring and the actual record is, to me, a thing of beauty. I still can't stand "FloriDada" (and the live version was the weakest of the bunch, too), but "Spilling Guts"? "Vertical"? "The Burglars"? They push some strange buttons on me, in a good way. And there is no other song in the Milky Way that sounds like "Lying in the Grass." Like, how does that song exist??

Lyrically tho the record leaves me scratching my head a bit.

Btw I think "Lying in the Grass" features the kiddie pool. Been trying to suss out which other songs do, too. Thoughts?

Saw em perform three times during their PW tours. What a fuckin ride, ye really fuckin good. Did top the first time I saw them ahead of MPP. really were firing on all cylinders that era. Gutted I missed them twice on the Chz tours

The PW shows were some of the most fun I've ever had with the band and I'm convinced FloriDada is a pop masterpiece, despite having the weakest live counterpart (due to the vocal gymnastics failing to translate?).

I think the album never reaches the heights of their greatest work (shout out to the cringe-worthy sticky-sweet Golden Gal) but the live shows are endlessly listenable. Such an immensely fun era.
I can understand how divisive the ChZ material can be but I always find it baffling that the PW era is so split.

I feel like it was so hyped when it was coming out with people comparing Floridada to a Feels song and only being slightly miffed at the goofiness of the chorus. I think PW was them developing more of a sense of humor. Like some are clearly just mad it doesn't have 'verbed out delay guitar or emo energy and I feel that but like.. that's what feels and SJ is for. And chz gave us a nice bland of manic cantina band PLUS la emotionale. pW is all about crunchy vibes for yr ears and brain and dancing bone . Like MPP without a drop of delay

I find PW's positivity, warmth and forward thinking completely FULL of depth. It's just not sad or looking back at anything, which I personally don't feel is the only way to achieve "depth" or to reach something emotive in myself. If anything I had spent way too much of my life looking back to my detriment. PW happened at the right moment for me. This album made me embrace where I was and what I was doing and I'll always remember that time as happy. Which was new for me, and the album helped me notice. On Delay is probably my favorite as well like a lot of yall have said. I love it, I always imagine it as a kind of ode to David and Noahs friendship and chemistry as singers. Or literally a song about hocketing. Theres just so much sweetness on this record.

However as long as this new album sounds even a little like the live shows I'm already anticipating a new favorite entirely this year. I just wanna know what it's called already!

a lot of the lyrics are meta in a cool kinda cheeky way

-floridada- a bridge about a bridge..
-hocus pocus- a song about thinking outside of norms, has kinda crazy key changes that are not normal
-vertical- a song about verticality that has a key change that obviously seems to try and induce like vertigo
-burglars- this one's a stretch but basically nothing repeats in this track 'til the end like the song structure is getting stolen away(???)
-on delay- people already talked about this, they're like singing about hocketing/call-and-response or just like dual singing arrangements in general

these are obvious so idk why I typed them up but yeah, I like it, it's almost a record about music/songwriting/creativity, which is chill w/ me

agree with all of the meta lyrics except the burglars is 1000% about how much capitalism sucks

Oooooooo. Cool. Then it's also about how we were basically stealing the album my trading bathroom flacs and then those horrible Amazon snippets that freebirded and circulated cuz we were being rabid consumers..damn albums deep.

Also them even having a track about gender relations is kinda sick even if it is also just about stanning Bea Arthur .

It makes up partially for the sexism of My Girls and Guy's Size

There’s that Gregorian cadence in “Burglars.” “What you think you own you don’t.” Did Dave discuss these lyrics with you at all?

Yeah. I mean, “Burglars” takes what’s happened with the financial system recently. A lot of what Dave and Noah did with this record lyrically was, they didn’t wanna write about themselves. A lot of the lyrics are often, “I’m feeling this because this is what’s going on with my life,” but with the last few records it’s almost a little bit more like we’re older, the world’s a bigger place and we’re bringing kids up in it.

And we don’t want to be preachy, we’re always a little wary of being U2. But things like violence or taxation, is there a way to discuss them with our own personal spin? “Burglars” is a lot about theft or burglary as something that’s present in all forms of life, you know? It happens with the banks, it happens with the government, it happened with the debt systems…but it also happens with a snake that steals eggs out of a bird’s nest. It happens on all levels. The impulse is something very primal.

huh cool. See it really does seem like one of their brain-ier records, maybe to its detriment for some. but yeah I get this weird mutant-y hive-mind galaxy brained energy from it where I feel like they're all omega-level telepaths and that's what I kinda dig about it....
