They have never sounded more like a “band in a room” than during the middle section of this

Agreed. Something about the drum mixing. Fantastic track tho, especially the "Isn't it now" section.

Also, not sure if they've ever sang it this way live, or I've just been really mishearing them this whole time, but the lyrics in the middle section are pretty clearly:

"Crawling from the serpent in the water, the mirror, the what have we become?"

Lyrically this section has always been kind of a headscratcher, but now my immediate impression is that it's tracing the origins of humanity, crawling out of the ocean and gaining awareness (the mirror) and all the confusion and questioning that comes with that. Such a heady concept, but it's really beautiful when contrasted with how fun and goofy that section is. And gives even more weight to the eventual DEFEAT climax...

Going back and hearing 2022 live versions they definitely do not say crawling so idk why they didn’t switch it live

I played the SiriusXM version of genies immediately after studio defeat and I had the thought too that it would be an awesome 1-2 punch to start the album

New tracklist prediction

Defeat

Genies
Gem
New song

Magicians
Kings
Broke

Stride
Soul

Also feel like you could open with genies and make defeat side C

Midsection lyrics are definitely new

Hasn’t really been mentioned much but Deakin is operating at MVP levels on the keys on this song

geologist adds some really cool textures to pt 3 which will pop off huge in CDQ

Can’t believe the song ends with Avey going “ defe—

ha o wow this was recorded and mixed and stuff incredibly. they did right by it

new fucking uh crazy good vocal melody in the first part between verses. gorgeous. im live tweeting but im gonna go back to just focusing on it, so pleased tho, just immediate relief at the quality and the pure feels as soon as the harmonies started. ok bye ty

defeat, genies, magicians and kings could all be opener. hard to hear anything but defeat or soul capturer as closer.

defeat as opener puts the rest of the songs in a whole different context which i like. the variations in song length on this album makes for interesting structural possibilities.

I could see the album closing with defeat on one side, kings' walk and genies on the other (as in the latter). I feel a weird connection between these songs thematically and tone wise.

The way the instruments fade in and out during the last part will be mind blowing when we hear this in full quality

Last 5 seconds kill me, damn they nailed the ending

this is insane. im glad it took 5+ years... it turned into something totally perfect by the end. big ass fucking like basoon note halfway thru last section... it has the grandeur of the new orleans shows, that ending.

this is gut wrenching... avey voice sounds reeeeeeeeeally good, so high in mix and clear, just perfect by now, all the synths perfect by now, doubled avey in the "justice justice" bit. "we were the good news/praise for the underdog" is about as massive as ever

this is a good ass vinyl rip for it to sound this good.

is that mostly panda in the kinda new part in the first part, between the verses..definitely a feels-y kind of thing.

I also think Genies is gonna be the closer and yeah, Kings Walk kinda makes the most sense as penultimate. I know this is the Def- thread buuut:

Side A:
Magicians
Gem and I
Side B:
Stride
New Song
Broke
Side C:
'feat
Side D:
Kings
Genies

God the thought is making me sorTa bothererd

The thought of this, magicians, and genies being on the same album is insane. AND all of the other tracks. HYPE

they kind of are doing in 3rd section what they did live with Daily Routine in like 16/17 where there's this big massive gorgeous like synth chord "drop" they're building too . but that shit is just beautiful damn,

i'd love a huge twist that this is the opener... magicians or genies for either 2nd or last track, or maybe stride rite final track, this could actually be their biggest album opener.... but ya guess it could be any side opener, side D most obvious but i cant tell if that end sounds like the ending of an LP

Also this may be one of their most fun songs to sing along with. Definitely gonna be a Karaoke hit. Can't wait for 1 billion Spotify listens.

i agree with the song not fading out i don't think this is a closer. would be pretty wild to have this in the middle. might be skipped a lot down the road during full album listens if ur not in the mood to 'go there'. as an opener-would it be the first time anco opens with a song this slow?

My God, that ending. It's so heartbreaking, it feels like life escaping the way the words run out. Reminds me of that scene in Terminator 2 where Miles Dyson is running out of breath before he blows up the cyberdyne building. Avey questioning whether or not it's the end and Panda's tragically wishful "oh no... not now" until Panda just stops entirely. Gahdamn giving me goosebumps just typing this.
