+1 for hearing more of lhtd's thoughts on AC philosophy. can't say I fully understand, but it was nice to read
it's been my hobby horse to think about writing a philosophy of animal collective aesthetics / a depth psychological/jungian/hillmanian analysis so maybe this will push me to actually do it. that said, no one need feel guilty if my post didn't make much sense... t'was an early morning ramblin and i was pretty darn loose with words
I think my favorite bit of that post was you saying 'Fall Be Kind' is a meta name because maybe the band themselves knew the hype they maintained from ST through to MPP wasn't sustainable and they were bound to have a "fall" from grace in the eyes of garbagey music writers and even some fans.
I kinda love that. And the idea of CHZ being about subjectivity and PW NOT being about them personally much (Bagels is the only song that seems to have the faintest whiff of autobiography.... MAYBE a couple panda songs) is cool. Or like. Maybe you said that.

yeah! although i'm inclined to think the "meta" aspect isn't explicit in their thought, it's a lacuna in the psyche of the art making itself.
the subjectivity aspect of chz and painting with could use a lot of clarification because i'm primarily speaking about the art as subject and less about the band's own subjectivity toward their art. again... i'll see if i can gather my thoughts but yeah keep talking! i enjoy these type of conversations so much

NTB and Rosie Oh are definitely autobiographical
Moonjock obviously is too, and id say Monkey Riches and Father Time could certainly be as well.

Yeah Father Time is about a friend of the band's who died young. Lightning strike, bizarrely enough. I believe he was a member of Black Dice
right ya, so CHZ seems actually pretty personal and autobiographical lyrically and often has to do with more stressed out vibes and it contributes to the franticness (Father Time, NTB, Monkey, Mercury esp) (whereas Moonjock is actually upbeat nostalgia, TS is like a hype-up song and Applesauce is kinda celebratory)
MPP is personal too and like maybe all their shit is honestly, but its so much more upbeat, its about almost exclusively good vibes and feelings. MPP and CHZ are like two volumes of a diary, one almost exclusively happy and bliss-y, the other a little more erratic/emotional or sometimes dark
and then PW I feel like they really do mostly take themselves out of the equation. The song is just about one specific thing whether it be Geography, Stepping out of Comfort Zones, Verticality/Vertigo, Value systems (natural selection), theft, feminism etc., etc.
I mean Nat. Selection actually seems a lil personal but that makes me appreciate panda's writing/hocketing more cuz it makes it feel less personal and almost a lil robotic.
Skiffs I'm not sure... seems kinda cryptic. Walker seems like a NTB follow-up but elsewhere I feel like shits pretty cryptic. Seems less diary-esqe and more zoomed out, but not as focused lyrically as the PW song-idea-nuggets are
Really exciting TS2 is going to be the first time since Strawberry Jam that they've had two consecutive full band albums (excepting ODDSAC for obvious reasons)

Cult Baltimore band Animal Collective offer a more colourful canvas of easy drifting listening on their latest album. Time Skiffs is a relatively straightforward, song-based collection of charming, wiggy indie pop with airy harmonies. However, much like Le Bon, there is a strange alchemy at play and lyrical subject matter, when apparent, is fairly esoteric, ranging from legendary Christian king Prester John to enigmatic pop composer Scott Walker.

As someone in school for psychology and who is hugely influenced by both Jung and Hilman, I will definitely read this. I've always thought about doing something similar. I always thought in terms of archetypes, as in just their own philosphy for making music as we know it, and then just the nature of how it sounds, Animal Collective has some really interesting things going on that is really rare and you don't see from a lot of other bands.

edit - *great* connection, dervish!
So less of the bands personal philosophy for making music which is definitely part of their music, but more the band being vessels for their music and art to be expressed through them. I've always viewed them as unconscious writers. Less that they are sitting down and intentionally writing something, but more so that they aren't even approaching music making as writers, but as listeners of what can be expressed through themselves. I've had this sense with a lot of their songs, where the melody sort of gives me this vague deja vu of having heard it before, even though I know I haven't. The melody feels familiar, like I'm recongnizing it upon hearing it. This AHa! Of course, this melody exists, I feel like it always has in the ethers of the subconscious. Banging around in the heads of many, waiting to be summoned and released!

hell yes! it's so rare for me to find other hillman enthusiasts, especially when it comes to music. hillman's description of the soul as image making (poiesis) seems to describe so much of what i love about animal collective's music. we'll need to connect sometime soon...
i gotta say again lol, i would rather wait a couple more days for it to be released digitally around the world than have a reddit rando freebird it from their USB turntable that i can't be reasonably sure of the quality of
Ive heard everything. I love the 3 singles and have loved all of the songs greatly since they debuted years ago. The people who haven't spoiled it for themselves yet cannot fathom how much of a treat they are in for.
Dragon Slayer is one of my fav Anco songs ever, period. Car Keys has gone through many changes but each one has been incredible. Another couple personal highlights are Royal & Desire, Cherokee. I don't really like Passer-by quite as much but *many* fans seem to love it a lot so far so I'd say you're most likely going to dig it. Not really any notable complaints... at all... it's just a fantastic freaking album. The singles choices kinda confused me because Cherokee has lead single energy but that's not really a real issue.
