I don't get why reviewers keep talking about how this is their most "mellow" and "laid-back" album to date. maybe compared to PW and CHz, sure, but they've had plenty of even more mellow verging on ambient stuff their entire career? also Tangerine Reef exists (though the erasure among these critics is real). and none of the singles or boots of Skiffs stuff have sounded mellow to me. more like mid-tempo

Tangerine Reef, Campfire Songs, Meeting of the Waters, and (most of) Hollindagain are not real

For real though, every track is pretty mid tempo except for RnD which could be described as a slow ballad I guess. Kind of a weird thing to gauge AC on honestly, considering Daffy Duck and Purple Bottle being on the same album. Oh and Bees. Visiting Friends and Rabbit. Seal Eyeing and Water Curses. Kind of an invisible point.

Two AC-billed eps and ALBUMS have been released since PW era and they get no recognition. Would really appreciate further exploration of how BtQ bridges into TS, especially since it seems those actual songs seem to all have been written later than the Skiffs stuff (or at least came from different places) but were themselves recorded as a dry run for a larger project that was always planned to be the Skiffs stuff (I think)

When I get my skiffs vinyl I'm gonna pregame it with BtQ, kinda like how FBk or WC go after MPP and SJ. Would be cool if we got another ep (and likely with how much material they have), and to sit there and mix out a master playlist of all the Skiff stuff and BtQ. What an enormous era, lest anyone forget.

I wanna like Bridge more than I do. I think its something that will grow, esp if COVID ever actually ends. It came out pretty damn early into the pandemic and so I associate it with coming out then and kinda being like 'hey that's cool, new AC but none of its the tour '19 stuff so eh, title track fun as hell tho' and then unfortunately closely linking it with early pandemic vibes which can't be a great thing.

Honestly feels like them throwing us a bone. It was a bleak ass time, maybe on of the worst stretches of the pandemic and also a way for them to see if remote-recording worked. So in those ways im super grateful for it. And it went well enough for them to move forward with Skiffs.

But yeah who knows. Piggy is kinda hilarious to me but um.... hm, well I dont know if I "like" it. And Rain makes me think of depression in a non-cathartic way lol. Sux is kinda cool tho.

If I still burned a CD I would make a disc of TR ---> Bridge and I would in fact listen and enjoy the hell out of it on car rides... maybe I should.

TR was always meant to be under-rated gem

Let the dragons abound

feeling this too… that big thief album is gonna be absurdly good, but the amount of singles is irritating

Cool idea. I actually ordered the Cows on Hourglass CD to come in around same time as Skiffs CD/vinyl I ordered so that in the car at least, I can comedown from Skiffs with an AC album I've wanted for a while but never actually got (Cows) and it'll keep me from really overplaying Skiffs in the car.

Foxtrot, that is fandom at its finest, and I also resonate with those words you shared. What a joy to have a band whose music intertwines with our lives and acts as another cherished/loved companion growing alongside us and our friends/family.

To have this kind of relationship with a band is a rare and beautiful thing -- I hope despite the onslaught of information and the accessibility of so much music, kids are continuing to develop these kinds of connections with their favorite artist/band. It's more common to pick and choose albums/eras of a band and jump ship here & there, the epitome of a "band-wagon fan"... but then there's AC, who have developed a very strange and radical fanbase who have adopted so many of their perspectives on music -- how to listen to it and engage with it. It's been a nourishing and educational journey getting to know them as people, artists, and performers.

Time Skiffs lends itself to a kind of love that their previous few albums did not because it's less conceptual and more focused on relationship -- between band members and between themselves and their memories and hearts. TS feels deeply imbued in MEANING, and it will create an imprint/impact on anyone who really wants to listen and engage with them on the record. It just has that feeling of transcending music and the Xs and Os of the sounds that we'll hear... more than carrying sounds, these skiffs will also just be a conveyor of the very heart of the band. And as we're in love with them, being on the receiving end of their very generous and intimate offering will be sure to touch us deeply.

Just wanted to say blindmowing this was a really nice post, great follow up to foxtrot's

I agree and yet I'd also echoe other users noting that reviews have not seemed to mention Cherokee much. That's either cuz their ears suck and/or we are smarter or cuz bitch got hella nerfed :/

Yes! Beautiful words blindmowing. Totally agree on so much of this. The Time Skiffs era really feels like it’s all about relationships, community and strong bonds. The heart of the band for sure. May also be part of the reason there is so much love around here atm. 8-) :*

might sound odd, and I don't typically feel this way about most bands, but I personally feel like AC is at their best when they're...idk...taking themselves seriously? They're are capable of injecting powerful emotion into their songs so when we get albums of gloopy florida rugrats songs (while that is unique and interesting in its own right) it feels like the band is not giving it their all? Maybe an unfair take, but hey. All this is to say I'm here for these loving community vibes of Time Skiffs.

I asked a shop over the weekend if they were getting it and they told me they couldn't be sure they'd even have it on release day with all of the current vinyl issues. Seems like a total luck of the draw thing.

That being said it seems like the long announcement to release for this was to ensure there would be vinyl on release day.

let's get this to page 128 real fast so hellomark's prophecy can come true

only way to listen to a shitty freebird is to listen to it VERY LOUDLY, then it's more about a visceral, physical first listen, like how you hear new music live at a concert for the first time, rather than about the details

"i don't know what i just heard, but it felt real good in my bones!"

Honestly I agree -- Maybe you had to be there but not even the 2019 boots have made me super jazzed on Cherokee (might prefer the new version for the bass - strings me along and I don't think the climax is really as noticeably worse as many are saying). Good, to be sure, but not next level like much of the other material. Hoping it'll click when I hear the juiced up studio version

I think it has one of my favorite arrangements of all the Skiffs stuff. The way Noah's swing beat keeps it chugging along while the bass and keyboard bounce around each other is so great. And the alternating dynamic shifts happening underneath the repetitive, hypnotic vocal line in the bridge are just so perfectly executed to me. Like it keeps you on your toes inching up to the climax so well. Not to mention the actual keyboard lines themselves in the bridge, which personally think are profoundly beautiful.
Idk I'll probably write a whole essay about the studio version.

My go-to Cherokee is Henry Miller 2019.

Desert Daze version for me but I’m sure any 2019 boot would do it justice

The climax where Avey is basically screaming “IF YOU CAN DO LOVE YOU HEAR ME” over and over is what’s been nerfed in the new versions. I’m sure the studio version will grow on me as well once I can hear it but it makes me nervous that none of the reviews have even casually mentioned it especially since it’s the longest track on the album

Ya I was concerned with the '21 tour/Blast Cherokee first like 4-5 times I heard it but then I realized that now its just Deakin who is singing the melody Avey used to sing. And Avey doesn't have the auto-tune but there's still this gurgly little bubbly synth sample that comes in at the beginning of the phrase that like evokes the '19 autotuning

I honestly think its perfect, maybe better than ever. But yeah, it is a little weird it isn't raved about in reviews. Seems like even on yr first listen the climax would standout to even an old boomer music writer but who knows

The auto tune I could take or leave I just miss the intensity in Avey’s delivery at that part. Also the sound of the song is so new for them, that jazzy toe-tapping rhythm throughout and then all of the sudden at the climax it’s like BAM vintage AC with Avey screaming. It worked so perfectly.
