I’m gonna say it — wish Defeat was the closer and that Kings was left off the album. Was hoping they’d dress Kings up to make it a worthy Closer but it’s kinda just a vocal vibe that goes on 4 minutes too long.

Basically my only critique. Freakin love it all otherwise

I've listened almost 5 times now. Definitely love it. Here are my thoughts:

Soul Capturer: They juiced this song up a shit ton from the live version. Thought it wouldn't make sense as an opener, but I was totally wrong.

Genie's Open: Definitely some odd production choices, but I'm satisfied with how it came out. The last section lost some of its power, but the vocal dynamics are still a lot of fun. The bassoon-esque sound during the first half is super cool. I feel like this song fits the album cover the most. I still think it makes absolutely no sense as track 2 though. Would be a perfect climax right before King's Walk. Soul Capturer -> Broke Zodiac actually flows perfectly, too.

Broke Zodiac: Completely perfect and flawless. In my top 3 from this album. I know some people miss the glitchy synth, which I thought was cool, but I love the atmospheric piano so much more. Very cozy song.

Magicians From Baltimore: Easily the best song on the album. Such a triumph. They really did nail it. The americana vibe from Deak's piano playing in the second half of the song is definitely a bit uncanny to hear in an AC song, but I totally welcome it.

Defeat: Admittedly, this song never moved me as much as it did others initially, but the studio version has been hitting so hard. The most immaculately produced song on the album. The "just a frightened mother" bit is possibly my favorite part of the whole album. So spooky but so heavenly at the same time.

Gem & I: I didn't think they'd fuck up the flow from Defeat to this song that hard lol. So abrupt. But I'll get used to it. Love the backing vocals so much. Just a great little song.

Stride Rite: Beautiful. Another one they nailed perfectly. Kinda wish they had Avey doing harmonies instead of two Deaks, but it still sounds great this way.

ACAB: On first listen, all I could think was "what the fuck". But now I'm seriously addicted to this song. It's 80s synthpop, a halloween song, and a christmas song all at once. Incredibly fun, albeit repetitive. Panda's "doooo do dooooo do doooo" is euphoric to me. On the flip side, I can't help but think this song really doesn't fit the album. It's so awkward, especially coming after Stride, and I don't love the fade-in. But I'm happy it exists anyway.

King's Walk: It's King's Walk alright. They did good with it, but there isn't much to say. It's growing on me as a closer.

Holy hell All The Clubs Are Broken is unlike anything I've heard from AnCo. It really does give some Ariel Pink vibes. I kind of love it and wish it was longer and elaborated upon more

The verses to Gem feel so delicate, it's like you want to dance but it's the middle of the night and you don't want to wake anybody.
And everyone saying that Deak is harmonizing with himself in Stride, are we sure that that's not actually Avey doing a very Deakin-esque vocal performance? This feels like Strung all over again lol.

Now that it freebirded, what does everyone think about the mixing on Baltimore? Easily the best song on the album but I do think it sounds a bit muddy in the second half.

Defeat -- blows me away every time... i'd only listened to the track a few times before the freebird today so now i'm finally allowing myself to obsessively listen to it. they nailed it: production, vocals, emotion, an all-timer

A
Soul Capturer -- incredible glow up from the live versions. love the pacing, the vocals, the little effects, the DRUMS!, not to mention the fun intro
Stride Rite -- just drop-dead beautiful

B+
Magicians -- like others said, the tempo is a bit too slow which is why i've downgraded it a bit for now
Gem and I -- this has potential to be an A, the bum bums are just perfect

ACAB -- really good little song!
Broke -- good, but i've never loved the vocal melody
Genies -- again, it's a good song... kinda wish they had pushed it further/wilder, but i think this has massive potential to grow on me

C
Kings -- this song has the potential to grow on me, for now it feels like a shrug of an addendum at the end of an epic album

overall, B+/A- after 3 listens. this thing is gonna be an A when all is said and done, i just know these songs are going to grow on me and crawl under my skin... very exciting day and glad to have it before all my little travels coming up... will be a good hold over until i get my orange vinyl in mid-October
