It’s so all over the pace, all these long songs and short songs….. big ambient spaces and then snappy drums, grooves….. but it all flows perfectly and fits together. I love it

Ya I love this album. My favourite of theirs since 09 easy

But I no longer think this will be critically acclaimed because it’s pretty weird and doesn’t have pop jams in the same way their acclaimed albums do. It’s very heady and requires patience … especially with all the long jams in the first half…that may scare off some folks or at least feel like a lot to get through

Hopefully folks approach it with a proggy ambient mindset and don’t expect immediacy or accessibility and everyone will be just fine haha

Ok. I caved. I’m sick. I took an edible. As I listened to Magicians a smile crept slowly and I entered a dream. A purple cloud carnival danced in my head. That smile never wavered. This is just right. Defeat right after makes more sense now. Didn't expect an mgmt congratulations song to be on here but AtCAB is a nice surprise.

Finished first listen. Super tired and a little too stoned but yeah certified classic. Gonna take it for a headphone listen soon. Genies is my first listen highlight, I'd say.

Clubs was wild, definitely had that feeling listening to an ac song since I first started their stuff so that's fun.

It is such an intriguing album, both in the flow and themes. I have a lot of thoughts about the title now after hearing Defeat in the context of the album. The ending section hits incredibly different. Gem actually made me laugh out loud from how jarring the shift in tone was, but only because it's kinda needed after that song. And I looove All the Clubs Are Broken. What a cool, weird little track. For how emotional this album is, it's got a good sense of humor to it

Had one of the most cathartic cries in awhile listening to this. Finally hearing Defeat in the context of the album has crushed me. What a journey it's been since those Music Box boots wow

Knee-jerk responses . . .
Soul Cap - they nailed it
Genie's - they brought the vocals more forward than I expected and they'll take some getting used to. it'll be a grower, which excites me
Broke - fine. about like i thought it would sound from live versions
Magicians - love love love it. crackles and hums and delivers
Defeat - brilliant in every way. maybe kinda odd on this album? a world unto itself
Gem - livened it up. fun and quirky in all the right ways
Stride - Deak sounds new here. i don't love the lyrics and i'd probably take Royal over it. but a really cozy song
Club - sounds like they wrote a song they wanted to appear on a mannheim steamroller christmas album AND a madd psa. doesn't work for me at all. hopefully this one's a grower
Kings - i surprisingly really like it. they done good with it. i like that they ditched the autotune but kept the avey vox toward the end.

I don't think this is gonna end up on any year-end top-ten lists. And while each track pretty much clicks with me right away, the flow of the album might take some time. In the end, I think some mashup mixes with Skiffs will work pretty well. It doesn't sound like a completely different beast than TS to my ears.

listened to it thrice and probably gonna give it a rest.

they clearly had to sequence this record in a specific way cuz of vinyl (and that 6 of the songs are 5+ minutes). soul cap and genie's to start off is very weird. same with magicians and defeat next to each other. basically a 15 min. chunk and a 32 minute chunk with Broke Zodiac between them.

I feel like any gripes I have are very minor:

so used to the sirius Genie's on youtube - wish that the studio was a little faster tempo

i'll die on this hill but I wish that Defeat wasn't a pre-release single. throwing it right in the middle does leave you impatient a little bit to get to the last 4 songs at some point.

kinda wish the little vocal effect wasn't on the last part of Magicians

still unsure on Clubs atm.

king's as a closer has grown on me

the production is a highlight for sure. the bass sounds great on every song.

faves: broke, magicians, stride, genie's

Genie's is the only song that didn't quiiite work for me on first listen, still haven't come back to it yet but I did like the "sea of light" back-and-forth vocals, so maybe it'll grow on me

I also wonder how much the 2021 revival of Genie's + 2 new songs (Soul Cap and Clubs) was a conscious decision of needing more material to make a full LP. like, they felt they needed more than 6 songs to justify a full album (and half that hypothetical album would've been Defeat).

without Genie's, Soul Cap, and Clubs maybe it would've been something like:

First listen thoughts

The intro to Soul Cap put a big smile on my face. Great idea. First two sections of Genie's they nailed, but the last part felt slightly too repetitive for how slow the tempo was I felt. Still nice, they pulled off a cool trick with how all the washy high frequencies from the cymbals suddenly drop out when the last section starts. Literally feels like taking a dive into a big refreshing pool. Broke is basically perfect, love how big Avey sounds during the chorus. Just a beautiful, spacey little song. Magicians kinda threw me off with how slow it is, but I think it will grow on me. Vocals in the last section are great. Gem was great, though slightly different than I was expecting. Was hoping they would lead into it a little more instead just busting right into it, but it works lol. Bum bums fill out the verses super nicely. Stride was gorgeous, harmonies are just stellar throughout. ACAB really took me by surprise, don't know what I was expecting it to sound like but it wasn't that lol. I thought it was great though, but I was really hoping for at least some kind of bridge or chorus lol. Still a neat little round. I think they nailed Kings for what it is, but also still feel like there's no reason for it to be as long as it is. Definitely like it as a closer.

Overall some of the same issues I had with Time Skiffs regarding some of the slower tempos they went for compared to how they sometimes play them live, but makes up for it in ways that TS didn't. AMAZING vocals throughout, and so many perfect production choices. So full and detailed sounding.

I'm psyched the majority of you are digging the album. I hope I get there too - I'm sure I will. Not quite clicking for me yet...I can't quite put my finger on what is bothering me about it either. I think I need to listen to it with headphones on

Spot on to my feelings too. Genies and Magicians are this album's Dragon Slayer and Car Keys in being slowed down a bit too much, but they (especially Magicians) actually deliver "early AC weird noise magic" which makes up for it for the most part. Not into the last bit of Genies but everything else on here is pretty perfectly executed.
