A two listen rundown

Soul Capturer is very catchy, a simple song extended nicely for quite a while. I like the intro waffle, sounds like a nod to classic AC. Better than the boots.

I still find Genie's quite flat, not sure what people really see in this song. The Sea of Light lyric is very difficult for me to get past, and it sounds very generic psych, sounds the most Beatlesy they've ever been. Doesn't sound very Animal Collective to me, no real personality. In place of any strong melodies, they dragged it out into different sections.

Broke Zodiac is good, like a top tier Skiffs song.

Magicians never did a massive amount for me. It's got a kind of On A Highway atmosphere which doesn't particularly appeal. Rather cold. I simply don't enjoy the melodies and find the bit where it takes off in the second half quite cringeworthy. It's like a CHz song. They seem to be enjoying themselves.

Defeat has a very good second section and wonderful third section. The first section is overly pedestrian, for me. I think it's wonderfully recorded and an amazing song but the first half is more boring than it was and I don't feel like listening to it any more.

Gem is similar to Zodiac, well recorded, a good catchy modern Panda AC song, little emotional impact but plenty of hooks.

Stride Rite is probably my favourite, love how upfront Deakin's vocals are, it's one of the strongest melodies on the record, one of the really emotionally directly moments. Great to see how much confidence he's showing here. This is peak Deak as a performer. Really hope he can follow this through with his next solo record. He's a great songwriter.

ATCAB is quite daft, very Ariel Pink as described above. I like it. Playful where a lot of this era is overly earnest and MOR. It's probably my second favourite.

King's is a C-side. Nothingness.

really happy with the album's sound rn!! from the two songs i've heard (broke zodiac gem and i). so, so, so much to unpack. been waiting for a long long time hehe.

Trying not to read all the impressions first but so psyched to hear this

YES the Star Wars lasers made it on Kings!!!

My only other hope was the glitch made it on Broke but that’s my only complaint.

I really just wanna listen to the record when its out. Songs feel pretty wide and lush feels like im trapping them in these headphones. Another great collection of AC songs to listen to examine and just enjoy.

A lot to unpack here. Gave it one listen through in the car. Beautiful record and a great achievement for them as a band. A real career highlight in my opinion and they made the right call holding these songs back to record in person. Gonna need more time to form more thorough opinions but my immediate stand out is the crisp vocal production. I don’t know if Noah’s voice has ever sounded this good on record

hey yall like many of yall i am currently losing my mind over the album! anyway, when i was listening to Soul Capturer, i noticed that the intro sounded somewhat familiar, and then it hit me:::: some of the talking comes from this 2019 tour promo video on AnCo's instagram! specifically the part where Avey babbles haha

because of this i have begun to think about how that clip also shows what i can only assume is the Leiper's Fork, Tennessee rehearsal space. which also begs the question::: is this intro made up of recordings from their time workshopping this album in 2019? if so that is the coolest homage to the beginning of this era! either way i do think it's really cool that they did a little callback to this promo video

Going to wait until I get a few more listens in to post some thoughts but I will say,

Soul Capturer is one of the best songs on this album. I love the intro, reminds me of Sung Tongs.

Having listened to the whole thing now I can say with certainty that throwing Defeat in the middle of this is a fucking crazy move.
