Jake and Me is so hauntingly beautiful. There are a lot of messed up things going on in my life right now and this song makes me emotional every time I hear it...

All the best for you, roark. And yes, Jake and Me :negative:.

the cd text for Palythoa says "Bar Hopper". I guess "Coral Man Rock Hard" wasn't a close contender for the official name

I've been so stoked on this release. Might give more of a 'formal' write up at some point, but until then, I wanted to share this article I came across.

How do you mean, "the CD text"?

Thanks for the kind words... I wasn't expecting that and it means a lot... This is a great community. Thankfully I've been doing a lot better the past couple days thanks to support from my friends.

The day before this release my life sort of fell apart. I was so amped to watch when it released but couldn't bring myself to. After a couple days I finally did, and was surprised at how cathartic it was. These songs are full of emotion if you really listen. Or maybe I'm just crazy biased because of my situation. Idk, either way I'm pumped with the direction they went on this!

I'm sorry to hear that things have been so tough but glad that you've got people around you and hopefully it's getting better. I agree, it's a very emotional record in terms of the atmosphere, even if the vocals are more meditative than usual. Really enjoying it the more I listen.

man I've been so damn busy that I still haven't actually listened to this ALL the way thru, but to be really lame, it does strike me as a bit more monotonous, esp in Avery's lovely singing than Music box. like I know I shouldn't compare them THAT much, but this feels like the inspiration for them to do more 3-man panda-less stuff, and then Music Box is the culmination of that.... so this kinda just makes me mouth-watery for a studio/offical MBV release (just realized music box village is mbv... confusing). but ya this is still amazing too, ill probably be able to better appreciate it soon

Hip Sponge feels (to me) like one of the saddest, loneliest songs the band has ever put out. I love it so very much.

Hollindagain seems more related to Danse Manatee than HCTI to me. I see your point though

I cant imagine creating a set where every song was this three minute up beat tune but who knows maybe it will happen. Id actually really like to do a darker record too. Not feeling wise persay but one that wasnt based on alot of prescise rhythms or forms. I guess i mean our "chill out" record hehe.

Been searching for this quote for a while. Even more crazy on-point than I thought before

ha, how funny. didnt geo say they'd NEVER play an old album in full live at one point? dont think it was asked about a specific album, but i recall reading that in an interview at some point.

man, I'm still waiting on this record (plus the eucalyptus ep of remixes) to arrive in the mail.

I want to say it's this interview but I'm too lazy to actually watch it to check:

still loving this album

my only complaint is that the transitions are TOO good, to the point where I can't really listen to any of the songs in isolation because the context is so integral. this is the first AC record I've felt that way about I think

Bumping 5 months late to the party as usual. I picked this up on vinyl for Christmas, and though it's a little hard to latch onto upon first listen, I think I'll end up enjoying this a lot more than anything else they've done since ODDSAC. It's really loose and atmospheric, and though it's a little hard to pinpoint when tracks stop and start, I can say that Side B is very great.

It's interesting how Geo is emphasised on the cover. Sonically, you can tell his influence is probably the strongest because it's almost like the album consists of his type of sound effects more than it does "songs". Also, he's a marine biologist, so that adds to it.

Oh, and the etching on the D side fucking rules.

I'm pretty surprised they chose to release this separate from the visuals. Even though ODDSAC was more married to the visuals at points, I think ODDSAC works much better as a standalone album, even though they decided not to release it that way. I'm generally much more intrigued by their more formless and vague compositions, but I lose interest in the Reefer if I'm not watching the film. That being said, some of my favorite sounds are scattered on this though, i'll give it that.

man this is finally just clicking after randomly coming back to it after listening to eucalyptus and then wanting spacier, electronic Avey vibes.... love how this is constantly straddling this line between form and chaos, songs/ambience... all kind of amazing coral-y sounding electronics, and the songs all seem to be just barely struggling to come into existence in a way that feels like 2nd coming of Hcti/hollin.

urging anyone who was kinda a lil put off and/or bored by this on the first FEW listens to give it another shot. lovely visuals as well

Nice write up

Hair Cutter, Inspector, and Palythoa are top-tier for me

Because it's set to images of coral I had always tried to listen to this on hot, sunny days when the big blue sea springs to mind. But actually, I think this album is much better suited to gloomy, rainy days. When everything is dull and grey. This album is perfect in that setting for me. Its stark textures and slightly unsettling dissonance hit different.

Where AC's usual psychedelic sounds evoke a whole spectrum of colour, this is a dull grey blue. Not the sparkling surface of the ocean in the end, but the murky depths lying beneath. A kind of desolate, primordial soup.

It's a bloody great album.
