Is there a more Defeat-ish song in the AC catalog than Alvin Row?

I suppose in terms of being long form songs that change a lot over the running time then yeah safer, it has that meandering, not tied to a time signature thing going on, but tbh i think in the flowers really has a very similar thing going on, it's a 3 part song that kinda builds to a much more driven middle section and then chills out again, obviously in vibe it's very different but structure wise it's kind of the same idea, the first and last sections of defeat fulfil similar roles to each other so for me that kind of reflects in the flowers as well

honestly this is why I think anyone's concerns about the middle section will likely be solved one way or another in the studio. i love cricket flowers more than most — i love listening to it after knowing the studio version for so long, the explosion becomes sort of a subtext for a pretty emotional chorus — but obviously the version on MPP has a completely different interpretation of that entire section. i wouldn't be surprised if the middle section of defeat is completely or mostly fresh. i think the first and last part will be pretty close to live, which is great, because they are perfect lol

approximation of deakin's ending organ part for whoever's interested (played for entirely too long because it's easy to lose track of yourself while playing it hehe)
The first section was great, sounds exactly like the live version minus that one vocal part.
The build up legitimately might end up a top 10 ac moment. sounded perfect and exactly what i think of when i think "animal collective"
middle section was a little diluted, but i think that's the point. vocals sound great but ill always think of what couldve been
third section is a masterpiece. the fucking strings and horns. the vocal effects?? i feel like we havent heard a vocal effect like that on panda since 2003.
ending is devastating. exactly what i wanted
my thoughts

Cannot even put into words how much this affects me so I won’t try. 10/10
Actually will say though, Jesus Christ the production on this is unbelievable. This is going to be their best sounding album yet

Am I crazy or is this the most fucking Danse Manatee sounding thing they’ve put out since 2001? The drones, the effects on Noah’s voice, the abstract drumming, the trilling sounds at the end that sound like they’re straight out of There’s An Arrow, it’s so that era to me and I can’t get enough

Fucking drums and bass in the middle section.
I've had four pints yeah and come home early from the pub, made my excuses, just to listen to this but fuck me.
On top of your game when you're coming of age.
They know they're past their best in many ways and yet they've somehow done this.
I haven't felt this way about Animal Collective in fifteen years.

I would absolutely love a PM if someone could spare a moment from listening!
seems to be hitting me in a similar way to other folks.
first section is great, i've never really had any qualms here (though i'll admit a secret part of me loved the auto-tuned take from the Meow Wolf era haha)
the build up into the middle sounds so amazing, vastly improved here imo
middle section is fine, remains to be my least favorite part but thats relative to the masterpiece its wrapped in
coming of age section is still one of my favorite pieces of music all time and it sounds absolutely incredible in the studio version
all in all, it feels like they nailed it. can't wait to get my hands on it for real

Also, not sure if they've ever sang it this way live, or I've just been really mishearing them this whole time, but the lyrics in the middle section are pretty clearly:
"Crawling from the serpent in the water, the mirror, the what have we become?"
Lyrically this section has always been kind of a headscratcher, but now my immediate impression is that it's tracing the origins of humanity, crawling out of the ocean and gaining awareness (the mirror) and all the confusion and questioning that comes with that. Such a heady concept, but it's really beautiful when contrasted with how fun and goofy that section is. And gives even more weight to the eventual DEFEAT climax...
