If you check out my last.fm page, I've listened to it every day for the past couple of months...probably since it was released. I can't explain it.

Ben Allen should become the fifth member of the band. He did an impeccable job mixing this masterpiece.

Mercury Man is still one of my favorites by them. This was the first album they released when I knew who they were so it holds a special place for me.

Love Avey's theremin vocal outro on this one and the live@pitchfork one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EMtKgmRnQo

Anyone know what effects processing he did for his vocals on the album/performances?

Good memories of the pre-release CHz radio stream.

^ Yeah I love Mercury Man. That, TS and Applesauce are the cream of the crop for me.

I think every time new AC related material comes out it makes me hype their most recent stuff more and like see it in a new light, so Little Fang I think has triggered a rekindled love of CHz. Such a goddamn good album.

Ben's website is http://www.MakeRecordsNotBombs.com

The subheading asks 'Are you a creator or a destroyer?'

Think about that.

He actually thought that he needed to spell out the meaning of the website address he registered.

He took some time, pondered and came to the conlsuion that he needed to clarify his laughably black and white perspective of reality.

I saw his dog had died on his website and I thought that's what you get for dropping bombs, mate.

This next bit will only make sense if you've looked at the website:

The dog probably got hypothermia from being in the bath with him all the time.

Karma (a reference to his bathtime Buddha bubblebath buddy).

Edit: I genuinely feel bad about using his dog like this to make a joke at his expense. Sorry, dog.

If anything, Ben is done with ac. They're not worthy of his genius production, and quite frankly, he knows it. He'll move on to make more modern marvels like the new youth lagoon album, while ac is left in the dust.

I love that YL album but why people have to talk in those absolute terms so lightly?

modern marvel, instant classic, album of the year, of the decade, of the century...

It's like any person on the internet is declaring what's going to endure in human culture five times per day

yeah the early versions on the pkfest 2011 boot are fucking amazing

the extended synth intro/outro on gotham/frights (I love the early titles) is banging!

honestly the biggest "issue" i have with ben allen is that it seems he's really good at adding stuff to a band's sound (like how he did on mpp - if i remember correctly, those songs were a lot less dense before ben's involvement) but he's not so good at mixing / working with songs that are already super dense (like the chz songs were before the band went into the studio).
but idk. that's just my personal take on his abilities as a producer.

Meriweather and centipede were the only two he produced right?

It sounded like the band wanted that dense, layered sound for those records. I do love the sparse, elongated live versions of the merriweather stuff. What examples from centipede stick out as over-production, or the whole thing? The live versions of centipede stuff definitely have more power and clarity, especially ones like moonjock.

centipede doesn't necessarily sound over-produced to me, but i do feel that there's a lot going on in the middle ranges. listening to the boots, i kind of got the sense that the band had a better idea of how to make all the sounds they were working with fit into a much wider range. on the album, it sounds to me like all those sounds were kind of stuffed into the middle ranges, which made it feel really... claustrophobic or overly-dense, i guess? I'd have to go back and re-listen to the album and the boots to get specific examples, though

by no means am i saying i disliked chz, i just feel it could've been so much better if the band had stuck to the live production/mixing they'd been working with on tours. i'd agree with tico and stan that honeycomb/gotham/crimson turned out stellar, but overall the studio versions of these songs fell a bit flat for me

The problem with CHz necessarily isn't the production... it's just that the songs aren't as consistently good as previous releases. Too many mediocre melodies.
