These two Noah tracks are so good, don’t remember being taken by either of them in 2019 boots but they are so cool. I think they bring a really nice balance to the rest of the material. I also love Soul Capturer I don’t care what anyone says about that song, it’ll probably change by the tour but I love the current droney VU style thing it is now, feels like it could have been a feels B-side

speen wrote:youre not talking about recording quality, right? because theres plenty of recent shows with recording quality better than basically anything before 2010. im assuming you mean that the shows just arent as good as they used to be? because i honestly disagree completely. theyre still amazing performing musicians, and the last decade is full of really amazing bootlegs, either from the band or solo projects. i think theres something to appreciate in every era of their music - i loved the PW shows - and the current era has already produced a few bootlegs that ive already returned to many many times. i'd rank the music box show alongside lyon 2007 or la fondation cartier 2004 as one of my favorites. im sure its just a matter of taste.
theres something to be said for the fact that the earlier shows were more unhinged, free-spirited, whatever. i would agree that element is pretty much in the past, and reappears in flashes. but thats just the nature of their career and growth as people. i too will always probably return more often to shows from the early feels era, or 2006, or the early mpp shows in 2007, for many reasons. but they still have a really rich output as a live band (and individual musicians - have you heard noah's recent madrid show? god dam)
I guess my question is more about ‘eras of bootlegs’. i love all the stuff we get now, probably even more so than the old stuff in some ways. I just wonder what the forum was like back then and how long it took for stuff to spread and be discussed. Like the first 2021 boot was out the same night if not the next morning, and we where all debating new versions of songs super quickly. or how the madrid panda boot was literally uploaded an hour after he performed. did the first 2007 boot with the earliest mpp songs have that same power? i love to think about that. did people know deak wouldn’t play that era or was he just not at those early shows ? small things like that i take for granted now
I guess the only thing you've missed is the nostalgia or whatever. I get the same excited feelings listening to new boots and hearing everyone get pumped about new songs. Also, boots would still arrive pretty quickly in the old days. Maybe a few days for people to fix/EQ or whatever.
But yeah, there was a special kind of magic around 06-07. And definitely people here were really, really excited about the new songs. I guess it was before MPP and some of the resulting baggage/stereotypes about AC fans too. There was just a lot of pure energy and excitement about the band and the new sounds. I mean, I remember first hearing stuff like Safer and Rev Green and Cuckoo in 2006 boots (and holy fuck that Helsinki show where they played all three back to back) and just everyone losing their shit about it. Heaps of Avey screams set in killer pop songs. Good times. And definitely so much energy from the band. I think SJ and MPP era boots were the peak in some ways. I got into the band in between Ark and ST but only really got into boots around Feels/SJ. All 4 members, killer songs that were just so good live, big growth of their sound etc. Hearing Rev Green at some of those European shows - holy shit.
And then the same again in 07 with early MPP shows. I remember everyone loving the rawness of stuff like early Summertime Clothes and the pure euphoria of Brother Sport. Loved the way they did WCWAR then too. They were kinda minimal and trance like those shows. The songs evolved and MPP sounded quite different in the end. I remember a bunch of us thinking it was going to be this hard, dry, techno kinda record.
All that said, look at us now lapping up every new boot/recording. Talking through the changes. Getting pumped for the record. Fawning over Defeat.

finally gave this week's broadcast a listen (thanks hunks)... loved the variety of material, loved the early passer-by and walker, especially walker... just imagining how huge these are going to sound with the prester john production style, it's almost too much to take... what an album this will be! and with the tour directly after release, i couldn't be happier to be a fan of this band right now

awesome post foxtrot, loved reading that. Feels pretty special that this community has existed for so long, and I don't feel alienated for having only gotten into AC in 2013. This is a special place I will always be thankful for
and thanks fern for posing the question.

I love the improv jam at the end of this! it's fantastic
and for next week, (magicians/defeat aside) it'd be fun to hear an older tune too, maybe something they jammed that didn't make the september shows

this version of soul capturer is so oddly intense... it evokes such a unique energy, like some kind of ethereal oasis... reminds me of their old work in that really 'mythical liminal' sense where it's so dreamy and surreal and unheard of, like how N64 or GameCube games felt as a kid. really hope that one makes it onto skiffs 2
I equally love their grandiose, personal and complex stuff, but it's awesome to hear those surreal essences returning to their work, especially after it almost feels like that sort of art has become so overdone nowadays and has really lost it's luster, AC obviously still finds new avenues even amidst the redundancy. The pendulum is swinging back, I suppose-- or better yet, a synchronicity is being reached. Like Voltron Animal Collective.

Cheers roopn! This is such a great place. I’ve been coming back for many years.
So now that they’ve played all the TS tracks bar one (they’ll hold off on Strung) in the Blast broadcasts, we really should sequence them into a cohesive ‘live rehearsal’ teaser version of the album

amazing post foxtrot. i definitely resonate with everything you said. i wasnt there on the forum back in 2006/2007 - i became aware of AC after the release of mpp - but im similarly attached to those years in the bootlegs and i can imagine how exciting it was to hear that era unfold in real time

It was fantastic and pretty silly. Lunatic excitement and enthusiasm, total fiends, mixed with old-style Internet drama, bickering and muddy digital footprints. Plenty of gimmick posters. Quite a few people, the older crew, didn't actually like how MPP turned out and plenty left after. It's a much mellower place these days but great to see it busier again and full of chat. I've always really enjoyed the feeling I get here.

Am I being horny brained or is Soul Capturer about sex? Seems at least flirtatious in a very Davey way. Feels comparisons are apt of course

thanks for the enjoyable reads, foxtrot!
this era feels like a calcification of the breakfast buffet that is everything that came before it.
deakin's 'shining' demo and this week's improv have me on my toes in the best way.

Echoing everyone else and saying that was a great read Foxtrot, getting into the band after MPP came out it's really exciting to think about what things were like before then as a fan. I threw on the March 2002 Tonic show last night thinking about how the next tour will be 20 years from that show and it kind of blew my mind to listen to Too Soon or Ice Cream Factory and realize you can hear bits of that stuff in these new songs. Something like Defeat to me really feels like the culmination of the sound they started chasing 20 plus years ago. The improv jams from this week also feel like they call back to that time obviously. It's incredibly exciting that they are so far into their career and are still at a point where we have no idea whats coming next.

I love that AC does all these little things. My first album release was CHz and it was cool when they did the radio transmissions and when the guys did that Purple Bottle video before they toured. It always interesting to hear live versions and see how they compare and contrast to the recorded ones. I think the guys do a great job of doing extra stuff so we're not out in the cold between releases.
and since everyone else is writing notes to mr. deakin, i'll say i hope you guys can sometime go into your concert archives and let some of those caged birds sing!
And thanks again, hunks!

'Blast Skiffs' - Time Skiffs assembled using the 2021 Blast Radio broadcasts:
https://www.mediafire.com/file/lmrd96j3 ... s.wav/file
I used a little of the ambient intro stuff from the second broadcast in place of 'Strung with Everything' just to indicate the space where that song will go. Haven't done anything to improve the sound - just a straight rip, arranged in the Time Skiffs sequence with some cheeky fade ins/outs etc. to try and give a bit of the feel of an album.

Congrats on the baby. My 1st was born in 07 not long after Strawberry Jam was released. He was the toughest of my kids in terms of being up all night and I remember a lot of sleepless nights listening to that record on headphones while rocking him to sleep. And I agree these recordings have been bringing a lot of warmth and joy to the fall this year.

Can't wait to hear how DDDD turns out, they've never really done a song like that before, it's a proper 70s rock ballad album closer. It's quite unusual having such 'straight' songs from AC but their personality and melodic/harmonic sensibility is still right there.

completey agree, totally opens up the chorus and highlights how great the melody is. went from being just a decent song to among the best of the bunch, and definitely is gonna elevate the 2nd LP even more because of it. best pre-album reworking of an AC song in years

Really curious as to how they’ll flesh out walkers. I feel like I remember historically Noah’s songs don’t usually have a ton of changes between debut with the band to record so this cool

I have three kids (10, 8 and 4) and AC have provided so many memories and moments. Too many to type out. My oldest two love to guess the vocalist when I put AC on. Especially picking out the parts on MPP and PW.

Hadn't reeeaaally listened to new Cherokee but just listened to the blast session one there. It fucking rips. Easily the heart of this era. Glad people have been coming around on it. The breakdown has been improved imo (and with Deakin taking lead on that bit... have they ever done that in a song before?)
Crazy that it's like eight minutes long and is followed by Passer-by. What a one-two punch that's gonna be

Totally! The fact that Blast Cherokee is stretched into a leisurely jam that has so much room to breathe and grow really does the song a lot of favors.
Walker's giving me strong Painting With vibes. Imagine if that had been worked into the PW live shows? A frantic bop chocked full of layering and hocketing? Sign me up.
