I forget what incarnation of CA it was but I remember Guys Eyes beat Brothersport and Taste in the numbergame, voted best song of MPP. At the time I was a little disappointed and just didn’t see it. But listening to it right now and I get it. I loved the song before, but it’s easily one of the best. I’ll add more later gotta take a shower and clean up

We’ve partnered with Abby Portner to present her newest piece, Paradox. Her immersive experience is taking over the entire House of Vans Brooklyn space using a fun house effect of loosing sense of reality. We’ve paired with music by Zola Jesus and Yves Tumor, artists that juxtapose their haunting and angelic recordings with intense live performances to further accentuate Portner’s vision. Hi loch! Enjoy your stay! Check out the live section if you are looking for some great links to live AC!
2 years! To celebrate I put on PW today and its refreshing after not listening to the studio stuff and mainly listening to boots/live stuff since the first PW tour. The pressing sounds so good on wax. Hounds is still my favorite, the bass line in that song is so awesome.

Theory about AC's sound evolution: the move away from traditional instruments (guitars, drums) and to synths, samplers, octatrax etc means that all of the boys who are playing have basically an entire band at their fingertips a la Noah's solo stuff. It's as if every member can be Geo now. Is this why their records have been so crammed full of noises/doodads/so busy? Because everyone needs something to do onstage??? And when you have an entire bands worth of sampling power, you sound like 3 bands all at once....

thoughts while i procrastinate at work....

it's okay for you to not like PW but i'm not sure this is the right explanation for it. live CHz was the most "traditional" they've been in a while and it's easy to make similar criticisms of that record. also, saying that every member is Noah is v different than each of them being Geo (although after seeing him play solo i'm more skeptical of his musical voice tbh — it's making me quick to blame him for all the noodly keyboard jamming on exotic scales that's snuck into concerts lately)

and the PW shows kinda quickly developed to be full of space, both horizontal + vertical (lol). i think there are a lot of interesting ways to analyze that trend but it seems to disprove your theory of "needing something to do onstage"

these hands need something to do onstage

i thought one of everyone's biggest gripes with PW was that it was so "stripped down"

I don't think they've ever been worried about "needing to do something on stage." It doesn't seem like they've ever planned things based on who needs to be doing something, or the amount of contribution someone is making. obviously im kinda putting words in their mouths, but they seem to only truly be worried about the fact that they are creating sound. if one of the members is on stage and creating sound, they're "doing enough"

re: geologist to blame for noodly jamming, isnt that all avey? I don't think geo has ever been responsible for anything melodic (aside from stuff like the samples in safer etc)

Geo's def been responsible for some melodic stuff. Bass keyboards on Centipede Hz tour, some synth and/or modular synth on PW tour (pretty sure but would have to double check live vids to confirm), synth noodles on MotW. I wanna say he added the steel drum melody when they recorded Peacebone? Can't remember

There's some Geo interview where he mentions this exact thing, the idea that everyone needs something to do on stage and how it can make things cluttered, I'll try to find it becaude I like what he said

I think it's worth pointing out in this discussion that when they first went "mostly electronic" on the first MPP era tours, their stuff was pointedly minimal.

The steel drum part in Peacebone was Avey, I remember him saying that he had imagined that part since writing the song but didn't make it until they were in the studio to record

But yeah, you're right about the other stuff. I guess I was thinking in terms of main melody, i dont think geo's ever been the one responsible for "playing the melody." which is why it would surprise me if all those "exotic noodles" from the PW tour were him. i guess it could be, it just seems like a more avey thing to do for me

geo's musical voice is fascinating to me. i think i've said this on here before but imo geo is the main reason why AC sounds like they do. Not in the sense that geologist is always there when they sound like AC (obviously, i dont think anyone would argue that sung tongs sounds out of character despite him not being on it), i more just mean that his ideas about creating sound for the band inspired the rest of the band members. Danse was sort of the defining moment for them in terms of realizing how they'd be going about creating their music, and judging from geologists contributions to that album, it seems like he had a big impact on how the other 3 dudes think about approaching their sound

I'm having a hard time figuring out how to say this without typing an essay on why geologist's music making techniques are really interesting. But judging from his recent music, which seems way more synth-based than sample-based, his approach is changing. Looking forward to hearing his solo stuff

Sorry, I've just realised...Two years?! Fuck off.

I'll give you a year, no arguments from my side. Hands up, year, yep, done. Agreed.

But two years?! What happened to the other fuckin year?

I work too hard and play too many computer games.

This is bullshit. I want a whole year now, please.

Dear fuckin Santa...

The run from Sung Tongs to MPP, including Person Pitch, including Prospect Hummer and Water Curses and Walkabout and the B-sides, is the greatest purple patch of any band (I like). Astonishingly fertile and intense. Everything before is basically incredible deep cuts and special in a different way, unconventional, and I understand how it could be the best stuff for some people. Some of it is peerless. But that particular run just blows me away now, thinking about it. Virtually everything since MPP has been a bit more studied, a more conscious choice of direction to avoid repetition rather than a naturally impulsive evolution. More 'deliberate' even in its experimentation. Some amazing music, some absolutely spectacular songs, but more considered, it feels to me. I'm not slagging it off, in fact, just expressing a 'narrative' as I see it. Live shows are still as exciting as ever. Solo work is intermittently as great as ever (in fact, solo stuff has always been a bit hit and miss, imo, and still is). The main band stuff, though, I don't know where they go next and they don't seem in a rush to get there.

My buddy was bringing up some performance that AC did where Geologist wasn't present and you can really tell what he brings to the table. I can't find anything about it myself. Does anybody know what show that would be?
