I concur. It’s too awkward and I don’t like saying it divorced from the context of defeat. I still think Sea of Light or Under Magnolias would have been great titles

i was listening to the audio and noticed that it sounded a little bit like stride rite slowed down, so i sped it up and that's exactly what it is!!!! check it out!!! the first video is what it originally sounded like, and the second one is the sped up version!

So weird it sounds exactly like the 2019 version, down to the ayyys instead of the lyrics… I’m wondering if it’s just like a soundboard recording or something. Idk though because the vocals are pretty studio adjacent

Is the post-2019 version drastically different? I haven't listened to any boots in years but this just sounds like an instrumental between verses to me. Going into an s sound, so maybe "she's lying sideways" or "sunlight gathers" if those are still in the lyrics

It definitely is. Even between 2021 and 2022 the song changed a lot. 21 version rules imo and was the peak but there are some aspects in each version that make them all great

post 2019 version doesn't have drums in the section that the clip they posted was in. post 2019 is also much slower, as well as having more lyrics in place of the "stayyyyyyyyy"

idk this clip sounds exactly like the first verse of the 2019 version to me but a bit faster, down to the effects on the keyboards, the samples, and the old drum part. i wouldn't be shocked if this was a practice space recording or something, because it would be so surprising to revert back to that exactly when everyone says the studio version is so different

Let us not forget that Love Field, the only other show with a Stride Rite in 2019 (and a terrible quality boot at that) also has a ridiculous, god tier setlist.

2019 Stride is goated. If this means we’re getting live release, if this means we’re getting a studio version closer to that era. Don’t care either way, I’m happy.

lol Stride is probably the only song other than Gem & I that I feel got unambiguously improved upon after the 2019 shows. Feel like everything else either got downgraded or changed in a way that I'm more ambivalent about.

what's interesting to me is that they use the Stride clip with the IIN? cover and IIN? links. if they'd posted the slowed down clip to some generic/random photo, i'd be more inclined it's part of some other release... but i think they just wanted put out some mysterious album teaser without getting in trouble from Domino who said they probably couldn't use studio versions as source material

2019 stride was so lovely, had some of my favorite samples from the 2019 tour. A studio version would kick ass.

its weird to me that they didnt play banshee beat, grass, or native belle on the recent tours. I was so happy that they got played in 2019, i was especially psyched about the faithful-to-the-original native belle…

I really think those only got played bc it was such a short tour. Granted this interview was around the time Painting With came out, they did say they found the ST stuff unsettling to go back to

Going to resist listening to this… whatever it is. Have gone the last week and a bit without listening to SC or Defeat but man it’s hard. Feel like a person with a substance abuse issue. Every day is hard but every day is an achievement worth celebrating

i prefer the ayyyyyy from 2019 waaaay more than the lyrics from the latest version. now all we need is confirmation that cha cha girl is on the album and baby we've got a stew goin

I must be on to something then! According to you anyways haha. I should elaborate. The overall ambiance/drones in defeat are black, the melodic instrumentation/arpeggios are little spots of colour, and the vocals are a bright white trail of sorts.
