I am super hyped about them touring but not getting my hopes up for an amazing album. I also only listened to the boots once and got my heart broken my the new defeat middle section changes.

I think that harpsichord is actually pretty cool but everyone hates it. I've been waiting for them to bust out a harpsichord. But I was also there for both Nola shows so like, I'll never hear a version as sweet as the go ones with the other musicians, and I basically had to accept that AT that performance, so I'm pretty immune to demoitis for that.
But yeah I'll miss The Path version of Prester for sure, and we've already talked about how the autotune seems like something that could go a bit sideways on record (or like disappear all-together?)
Either way, we'll get an go Music Box recording at some point so whatev.
def looking forward to a tour maybe in the fall/winter?

i think they'll save the second part of defeat. all it really needs to me is the part before the breakdown where every instrument is ringing, and it slowly builds up to the sound section. in needs the og version's steve reich like meditation on a simple chord!!! in studio i think they'll have more of a grip on it. really the middle section being different with the harpsicord is overshadowed by how the first and third section in the top 5 best songs theyve made ever. and as a (not suite) the sections will have names right? its fun to think about. it could go
I: Coming of Age
II: The Sound
III: Frightened Mother / Not Now
after the Avey birds EP i am a believer in the vocoder autotune shenanigans. Enjoy the Change got upgraded from live to studio, and the crazy vocals is a big part of that and with proper mixing it could be fucking DIFFERENT. like the AC kind of different we all know and love. i really think this is gonna be some sort of bastard mix between PC music and prog rock. bolder, gem and i and prester john could be the best singles to show that.

idk, fil like it's just desert daze+ meow wolf maybe, for me personally, cause desert days lacks prestor and defeat weirdly. idk tho
"if you can do the love, you'll heal me" is the best like musical moment from them since... the end of Daily Routine live maybe. the synth arps that happen as that kinda builds into total euphoria is probably the only reason im alive rn, nbd

this video has all the new jams
edit: never mind, sounds like that video uses several lower quality boots, wouldn't recommend
i have been listening to a compilation someone made on the subreddit that is really good, i'll look back and see if i can find it

Did anyone catch the songs played before (at least) the Meow Wolf and Point Reyes shows? One song was blatantly obvious as the inspiration for Defeat. Featured droning windbag instrument and a harpsichord.

Im not in mystery inc ... But if we have anything to go on the october shows would be a great start. They played like 9 ? new songs so that also is an indication of the sound that they are trying to achieve. So this is more or less of what to expect although we know the end result isnt always as it was at first. So the question remains ... Will it be good though ?

Finally listened to music box and also the first boot at Tulsa. If the first ten minutes of defeat are cut in the studio I’m quitting this band. The rest is great but avey and panda harmonizing around that sweet melody for ten minutes is priceless. Fr tho I really think this album will be the true comeback that we all so selfishly wish for.. AC back in their informative spiritual realm

This will be their Rick Rubin effort.
joking I guess but honestly, a very strait-forward (whatever that can mean production wise) approach with a vaguely hip-hop/rock background sounds right. just let be kinda like... normal, and polished, but also a lil jammy, loose-ish (jazzz style)

Don't know if everyone saw but the person who posted those studio pics on Twitter confirmed that they were there writing for the next album, so I guess no recording has happened yet. I remember something similar happening with Centipede, where I believe Moonjock, Applesauce, Pulleys and Amanita were written in separate sessions after the first tour in 2011 (coincidentally 4 of the strongest songs from that era imo). They've gotta be super close to recording this stuff.

Kinda agree, it could be the dad-rock album....
It could be produced by Jeff Lynne, ELO vibes. There’s also almost a Neil Young influence on some songwriting, a bit of Steely Dan on Panda’s. Prester John also sounds like Don’t Let Me Down by the breetles.

They are both wistful at least. If anything I get maybe a Crosby Stills and Nash vibe. Like Hopelessly Helping with a beat. Plus 'Suicide is Painless', the MASH theme.
There's dad-rock vibes all over this, but in a much deeper, beautiful, soulful way than say... VW's Father of the Bride, which is borderline hokey sometimes (but I still like that too..)

That's the very first thing I thought too. Crosby, Stills, and Nash. Loving the focus on harmonies with this album cycle.

I would be ok with that!
though personally I'd prefer Bolder be on the album.
I think what I want the most is a big fugken double album

24 into Gem and I is what I was thinking the other day would make a nice combo
DownDownDown would be better before Defeat though imo

i was actually thinking a lot that bolder might be the closer for the album, since it has that pretty and slow three part singalong stuff. if it were defeat into bolder i think they might do that or they'll put defeat in the middle like visiting friends. i just think the whole album should lead up to defeat, and strangers into defeat is SO GOOD. its perf cuz they love short poppy tracks before their big beaters too...
and it would round it out to 11, which is the golden number for ac albums

I like Tri-Kid but I'm okay with it not showing up. Tho it'd be great as an EP track or b-side. And I pegged it as an Avey track but who knows. Magnolia/Magicians, Spider, Prestor and Defeat obvs are full avey...
Defeat is either closer, end of side A if they're weird about it or like an EP/Single unto itself or something idk. has to be one of those, seems weird af as an opener or just somewhere random.

Tracklist guess:
1. Cherokee
2. Gem and I
3. Dragon Slayer
4. 24
5. Passerby
6. Down Down Down
7. Strangers
8. Bolder
9. Prester John
10. Defeat
EP
Kings
Magicians from Baltimore
Appreciate
Stride Right
I just can't see them ending this album any other way than with Defeat. It doesn't make sense anywhere else in the album. If they were complete madmen they would put it as the opener, but I think the label would push back against that. Man, I'm so happy with these new tracks.

these stretches of time are kinda cool cuz it'll almost feel like we're never gonna get these releases we're dreaming of and then all of the sudden it's like a half year later and some/all of it has been announced as well as other dream releases like a Music Box live vinyl/dvd boxset getting announced not too long before or after as well and all of the sudden its just like.... damn look how far we've come.

I really hope Defeat is a penultimate track. Strawberry Jam did it impeccably with Cuckoo Cuckoo leading right into Derek.
If Defeat is "I Want You (She's So Heavy)," we NEED a "Here Comes the Sun" to close it out.
Defeat could also work well if it closes out the side of an album (hopefully it takes up an entire side!), leaving the listener cold, alone and defeated until they flip the record and are greeted with newfound perspective and growth.

I don't care where Defeat ends up as long as it isn't nerfed to like nine minutes. I'll take fifteen minutes, and I hope it's on the album. But my head says it'll be a standalone thing

agreed. please keep it 22 minutes to be honest, the first part is just immaculate now. the song needs that length since it explores every part so well, and hjonestly this is captured well on the boots since every boot this part is cheered over since everyone thinks the song is done, but the last chord of defeat is one of the most cathartic and release of tension moments in their discog, but most of the time it gets noised over or is part of a transition. it could honestly go defeat > bolder .

I reckon defeat as a mid-album behemoth a la visiting friends would be great

Visiting Friends' placement is legendary and works really well obvs...
this is honestly worth this level of discussion since they really haven't had a longer track like this since their like first 5 albums. like not only is it like as emotionally heavy as one of the ancient old god classics like Alvin Row, but like they literally focused on pretty tight pop song lengths post-Feels/Safer for an entire decade after that. It's been a long time and it feels good they finally came back to a long format (not a) Suite. I'm predicting..... 15 min. We truly don't know a song from them more than 12 right? This is uncharted territory.
and for the record thinks like Michael Remember and oddities like that don't count.
