last week was a 3 song jammed set from aug 17. prester john, cherokee, Genie's Open. then a demo I made for What's On the Road, It's Shining in 2018 before dave and brian and I got together to prepare the music box set.
this week. was a hodgepodge.
Stride Rite from aug 17 2021 in Asheville sessions
Passerby from july 23 2019 from the first session where the 4 of us got together to start working on all of these songs
Broke Zodiac from august 7 2021
Walker from july 23 2019
Soul Capturer from aug 16 2021
and then a long improv from august 12 2021
I'll get the broadcast sorted next week and talk about all of this.
thanks for tuning in and that everyone is enjoying life as best as they can

Was known as strangers during the 2019 tour. Then this most recent tour they played it at several of the shows.
Ohhhhhhhhhhh ok, ok gotcha. This is the first we're seeing the full title I take it? It's just been "Broke" on their setlists right?

Mr. Dibb, If you're still on, are the new songs from your 2018 tour with GGD still on your mind?

Deak, it’d be sick if you could somehow get us a version of the broadcast that has your comments, seeing as you laid ‘em down originally! Either way, thank you for the magic!

Broke Zodiac is so chill and vibey. Love the spacey textural elements and the glitchy bits. What a jam.
Walker with some clarity (and no annoying chick in the crowd riffing) is awesome too. Love the melodic percussive stuff (marimba keyboard setting?).

Woah awesome! Thanks for the info josh!
Broke Zodiac is indeed a sweet title, although it’ll probably always be strangers in my head…
Can’t get over how amazing that recording of stride right is. Really really beautiful. Huge song. Listened to this stream several times tonight, really loving it!

This question or sentiment goes to all you OG members — do y’all feel like the overall audio quality of bootlegs in the modern era (2011 onward, and except for stuff released by the krewe) just isn’t as high as a lot of the old stuff? Something like Melkweg for example is just a sublime piece of recording (btw does anyone have any fun stories of the old boots? i often wonder what the forum looked like in ‘05 getting to hear early feral reverend green cuts and things like that — it seems to me things are uploaded much quicker than I imagine they where in the old times) anyways thanks!

Interesting question. I'd say that the Live Archive speaks for itself in that there used to be a lot more boots recorded, so you have more of a choice looking back to pick out the highlights. Even with MPP, there are a lot of boots I'd never listen to more than once, among the three or four which are absolutely brilliant. Plenty of the Feels, ST and SJ boots are pretty crud, but there was enough interest and enough recordings to get a Malta 2006 or Brighton 2003 or whatever.
I can't remember the last time I heard a low-par bootleg, to be honest. I didn't really listen to the CHz or PW boots so much, to be completely honest, but there's been a lot of great Avey and Panda solo boots over the last however many years and all the AC stuff I've heard since Music Box has been really good, some of it excellent. Great question, though.

youre not talking about recording quality, right? because theres plenty of recent shows with recording quality better than basically anything before 2010. im assuming you mean that the shows just arent as good as they used to be? because i honestly disagree completely. theyre still amazing performing musicians, and the last decade is full of really amazing bootlegs, either from the band or solo projects. i think theres something to appreciate in every era of their music - i loved the PW shows - and the current era has already produced a few bootlegs that ive already returned to many many times. i'd rank the music box show alongside lyon 2007 or la fondation cartier 2004 as one of my favorites. im sure its just a matter of taste.
theres something to be said for the fact that the earlier shows were more unhinged, free-spirited, whatever. i would agree that element is pretty much in the past, and reappears in flashes. but thats just the nature of their career and growth as people. i too will always probably return more often to shows from the early feels era, or 2006, or the early mpp shows in 2007, for many reasons. but they still have a really rich output as a live band (and individual musicians - have you heard noah's recent madrid show? god dam)

This was my favourite Blast yet, by the way. Stride Rite sounds brilliant, proper 'classic' Deakin melodies and atmosphere, love it. Passerby is as great as it ever was. I really hope they retain that original verse melody. Would be a cruel blow. The two PB songs are like, wow, what if Rosie Oh but good? Love them both. Soul Capturer still sounds like a cover to me, never heard anything so 'straight' from them but not inherently anything bad about that. The jamming is always interesting to hear. Great little session.

Great hodgepodge of songs on the new broadcast. I can totally live without the autotune on passerby now, but I'll shed a few tears if the clicky percussion didn't make it on the studio version. I love that one insane fill that panda does on the blast radio version.
Soul Capturer is so damn Woodstock

Didn't think I'd need glitch delays on the keyboards in broke, but now I do! Really nice to have all the different versions of these songs.

The more glitch delay, the better! LOVE the glitch delay on 2019 Cherokee too!! It felt like the first time I was hearing Walker and Soul Capturer on this blast, the recordings are so great. This has been such a killer weekly treat!
Here's week 3 (and the others, including week 2 with the updated info):

Will not stand for Rosie Oh slander!! But they're truly an extension of that tropical vibe for sure. The 2021 Broke Zodiac is super psychedelic to me, with the swirl of echoing piano and the slowed strings. Feels like a heatwave hallucination

Also josh if you’re still in the room with us, I’m casting a vote for magicians/defeat next week. Thanks for doing these!

I guess my question is more about ‘eras of bootlegs’. i love all the stuff we get now, probably even more so than the old stuff in some ways. I just wonder what the forum was like back then and how long it took for stuff to spread and be discussed. Like the first 2021 boot was out the same night if not the next morning, and we where all debating new versions of songs super quickly. or how the madrid panda boot was literally uploaded an hour after he performed. did the first 2007 boot with the earliest mpp songs have that same power? i love to think about that. did people know deak wouldn’t play that era or was he just not at those early shows ? small things like that i take for granted now

also the keys in the chorus of broke zodiac are so good, i was not picking up on those in the boots
