When I saw him play sunset live in 2018 he sang this refrain over the ending that kinda switches around some of the earlier lyrics, it was “to pay to play to black out anyway” over and over and I always sing that part when I listen to it. are there any boots of him doing that at other shows?

I think Skiffs is 5 stars but I also think that dio is right.
Defeat/Magicians/SC/Kings > Slayer/SWE/Cherokee/Passerby/WGB
Broke/Gem > Car Keys/Walker
Genies > Prester
Stride > R&D
Which really blows my mind. IIN is going to rival their golden era and is pretty much guaranteed to be a classic. My level of anticipation is higher than it has been for any new release (by any band) since MPP.

Band: Magicians, Prester John, Broke Zodiac, Royal (couldn’t pick 3 out of these)
Panda Bear: In My Body, Crescendo, I Know I Don’t Know
Avey Tare: Midnight Special, Hey Bog, Lips at Night

V hard to stop listening to Soul Cap when it just keeps getting better everytime I return to it. It's in that magic phase of new AC studio recordings where I keep unbelievably discovering new details. Rest of the album is going to be a damn feast.

The vocals at the end of Soul remind me a lot of the stuff they would do with Sung Tongs songs live during the MPP era, like that "wawawawawa" break in leaf house.

Only slightly related to the above but I wish Boneless was on Spotify. I’ve got a playlist of all Panda’s random bits and it’s a big hole!

also based on that last syllable which sounds more like "found" (the lyric in 2021), i guess avey changed that line to "what have we become" in the studio after recording

So sick. I'd love more recording session footage/more behind-the-scenes insights like Russ' note about flipping the tape upside down to get reverse reverb. It looks like this album was a joy to record and hopefully that's what a lot of the press cycle will revolve around instead of them mostly having to talk about Music Box again lol. Also love the Deak head bob

Glad to see there’s more Midnight Special lovers out there. That’s probably gotta be my #1 Avey song.
And now I am having a dilemma. I preordered the purple vinyl, but the orange one also looks so damn good. I’m contemplating whether I should buy it or not.

oh wow that's fascinating. we almost ended up with "there was not serpent the water the rainbow the werewolf that they found" as the immortalized lyric rather than a relative blip in the song's history.
i think it's funny that after recording it as "crawling from the serpent" he changed it back again to "there was not a serpent" for the 2022 live shows. i wonder if he got sheepish about it at some point after enough changes since deak and panda had to be singing the same words as him. like
"uh, guys, i was thinking maybe, uh..."
"defeat lyrics again?"
"no! ...yes."

also i'd previously said that prester john is the best non-IIN AC song of the past five years but if i'm being honest about what i enjoy listening to most then i would say it's probably Bug Mall. that thing is just buzzing with creativity even if it is basically just a bunch of ambient sketches stitched together

on the topic, i guess i've played AC enough for my wife that when i play Feels she thinks it's normal enough that when her very conservative rural midwest parents come over, she says "play Feels i think they'd like it"
Conservative rural guy here, love Feels, was my first album. Love all AnCo albums. It's just good vibes.
im gonna need some explanation here,
conservative meaning what?
do you hate brown people and gay people?
Jeez.

I’ve listened to SC once but it was such a glorious first listen my hopes for this record are sky high. Like foxtrot, this is the most hyped I’ve been since MPP… easily. I was hyped for Chz but didn’t like the source material as much. The total unknown of PW was super cool but it came during a time I was less into AC again. The 2019 boots instantly put me back into an AC obsessive phase and my love for this band returned to 00s levels with added depth / appreciation for their past and trajectory that their music means more to me now than ever… so ya, this is shaping up to be a classic during a period of my life where I’ve come to love AC with a thicker and wider depth… so this is feeling pretty monumental to me.

Was on vacation for the last week and a half and have a question about the Defeat single -- I see there's a 12" listed on Domino and Bandcamp, did those truly already sellout or have they not been up for pre-order sale yet?

@utensilvirus, I think it did sell out because I ordered mine the day it came out and got a confirmation and everything.
Also, wish I didn't jump the gun and get the purple IIN vinyl, shit kinda looks like Barney smh. If anyone wants to trade for a black vinyl, PM me. I'll also throw in an extra copy of that Avey Pharmacy EP if you want.

allowed myself another listen of SC. trying to limit myself but i’m way too hyped. nothing new to say: this album is going to sound so good. i’m already astounded by the details that keep revealing themselves in just this one song, and i can’t believe it is only the first track of the longest AC studio album (and we haven’t even heard the intro for the studio version!)
unbelievably hyped. echoing what everyone said, I’m thinking about it constantly. it’s one of those things on the horizon i remind myself of when I’m having a rough day and need something to keep me going
curious what other people make of the line “goodbye William Tell” — aside from the famous apple scene, my main association with William Tell is Rossini’s overture. i have no idea what Dave is getting at with this line haha

I think he's using William Tell as an overarching idea of someone who is courageous and can save something. So goodbye William Tell is like losing courage.

interesting — the legend of Tell does fit in with the overarching medieval vibe/theme of these songs

I do NOT want this to freebird. This is an autumn album. Deserves to be heard first on its intended date when the leaves are changing colour for those in the northern hemisphere. For those in the south, hope it links up with spring pretty well too!

lol...ya
i'm with y'all though, if this freebirds i absolutely WILL listen, don't get me wrong. when it comes to AC, my self-control is non-existent. i don't want it to freebird though...for the band's sake and for timing's sake, right after i get back from upstate new york enjoying woodsist fest and the lakes and forest. to get home, smell the autumn leaves, take a walk in the quiet of the day and listen to AC's next masterpiece...oh, it would be perfect.
of course though, instead of this idyllic first listen on the band's intended day of listening, i surely will be listening to a shitty vinyl rip of this on shitty headphones during my lunchbreak on a bad mood day and i'm gonna come on here and freak out with the rest of y'all

"guys how do I rip this" one track, the absolute dirtiest LP needle you've ever heard, there will be a skip, it'll be 192kbps, and your friend will have this rip in their library for the next 15 years
