consider tho that playpen sounds a lot like early 2007 mpp jams... that the song writing on feels is like a combo of spirit and here comes the indian.. i think that eucalpytus is as new as danse manatee was to hollindagain. i think their dichotomy between songysongs and ambient drawn out pieces is akin to a lot of elec producers going frm house to ambient, like shinichi atobe or somethin. they were just using different instruments all the time back in the day.. this might b oversimplifying.... i also think avey n panda r tryna make the records they always wanted to as they get older

Sorry I meant their last two would have had just one S because because geologiSt was present to provide an extra S from his name, as was custom up to that point
also it's S for Studio
it all made perfect sense until Centipede Hurts

That's a classic vid. I've been so into the 2003 boots lately, I'd give multiple limbs to be able to have seen them on that tour

I've mentioned before but I really could see the band splitting up more for frequent, smaller releases.
Let's hope

I do think that Dave and Josh would make a fucking killer album together. Equally, though, Noah's Ark is absolutely stunning, one of the true, pure highlights of their live work, so I'd love love love for Noah and Josh to go back and record in the style of that era. It's incredibly unlikely thirteen years on (I'm dying before my eyes) but it's a dream for me.

that clip sounds so very AC, lol
seriously play Did You See the Words over the top of it
or are they actually playing that song???
I mean I guess it just has to be a droney thing in the same key to work well so maybe it's not such a revelation

the only Noah's Ark bootleg i've heard is the one from 02-29 in the recordings thread. do you have other recordings or videos of noah & josh? would love to hear more!

No, sadly. I think that's basically it. I assume they rehearsed, though, because there's something singular about those shows, a different strain of AC.

I do wonder: whether they would ever complete a shorter year of touring, after a longer tour the previous year, of very arranged/composed music, decide to spontaneously and freely write and record right then with something similar to their live setup, during a time where they each also travel to a few personal and shared concerts to give breathing room and added inspiration?

It isn't really. Would be cool. The guys are keeping real busy lately, doing one-off things as well as solo shows.
Not that far a reach to suggest they are writing AC material right now

I just hope they let themselves return to the workflow of MPP. Send each other demos again!
Meet up and figure out how to do it live.
Then tour those songs until they are ready for the studio.
I love the dudes so much but I wonder if their desire to try new things, keep things fresh, has worked against them a little bit. Like I get it you want don't want to repeat yourself, you want new sounds and new ways of getting to those sounds but come on Noah just send Avey a demo again, please. I loved Painting With but I really hope it's the last time they write separately.

Whatever they do next I hope Sonny DiPerri isn't involved... Meeting of the Waters is cool but neither Enter the Slasher House nor Painting With sound good at all to me I can't say how much of that is because of him but yeah
Does it seem to anyone else like a step backwards in some way for them to have co-produced their last three mainstream albums rather than holding the producer reins completely like before?

Totally agree. I think MotW and PW sound perfectly good, particularly MotW, but Ben Allen and Pete Kember are all over the records they worked on. Nothing inherently wrong with that (I love the sound of the MGMT album Pete worked on) but the frayed edges and AC individuality have been mostly removed.

At this point I completely trust the band to work with whoever they feel is right with their current/future creative urges. They have worked with a variety of producers/collaborators and each project "worked" for me. Do I like some albums more than others? Sure, but I also wouldn't ask for them to be different or not been able to hear the band work/sound that way when they did. In every era of the band I always prefer the live versions of the songs compared to the studio albums, but I don't necessarily think its because of the producers. I really think its mostly how concrete the studio versions end up sounding as definitive versions of each song and the live versions are the loose organic versions that feel more "alive"
It's the same issue The Grateful Dead have with the studio recordings vs the live performances. Nothing can top a performance in which musicians that embrace the spirit of performing live and accepting minor adjustments/improvisations each time they play those songs together. They channel a different spirit live and it is possibly impossible to record that spirit faithfully in the studio, especially now that their music is arguably much more rich, complex and dense compared to to pre-feels material. I would argue recording in a studio is all about control, whereas a live performance inherently is about letting yourself go from being in control and letting the music take you where it wants.
PW was an interesting experiment for the band. We didn't get to hear the live versions first so we weren't treated to the "alive" versions of the songs and disappointed later when the studio recording failed to recreate that being we all heard in the performances. We all got to experience the songs as concrete compositions and then had our minds blown with how they were able to make them so fluid and morph with other songs from different eras of the band (Alvin Row, Bees, Sweet Road, etc)
I am still an extremely happy animal collective fan. I trust them completely, even when I don't understand it right away, they eventually show me what they are trying to do and I am always impressed.
TLDR; I trust them and live is different than studio.
