why does SJ end with Safer on spotify? Did I miss something?

It's considered a bonus track. Same on apple music

Except it's on the vinyl version of the album when you go to their store.
And that's good. Safer is the best closer they could've chosen. But I think one of the reasons SJ is so good is that almost every song is emotionally packed and written like a closer.

After all this time I have a hard time processing "Safer" as anything other than a standalone. Didn't even know there were releases of Strawberry Jam that included it. Can't imagine it following "Derek" without a side break, because of how sharp and stark the opening is.
Also, that vinyl version doesn't have "Peacebone"? That seems bizarre.

Woah, what the hell, you're right! Maybe that was a mistake on the site? There's a bonus track on the end, Cuckoo Cuckoo - Live in Malta.

I do own it, and none of the discogs entries for any of the vinyl releases of SJ have safer

Yeah I actually looked up the versions on Discogs too yesterday, and you're right. I have no idea what is up with that tracklisting on their website.

It's possible they're planning a reissue, but even then the tracklisting is missing Peacebone so it's pretty strange

Deakin and Geologist are doing a show in Baltimore next weekend. Is this the first time AC has appeared without Panda or Avey?

well there is the Deakin/Geo song Seeing Twinkies, but when it comes to playing live, I think it is the first yeah

Worth noting they're billed as 'Deakin and Geologist of Animal Collective'

true. that's kinda weird. you'd think that they'd be billed simply as animal collective, given that the band has stressed that the name means any grouping of the four of them

as long as it includes either avey or panda

So are Dave and Noah mean jerks who can't like Josh and Brian shine????
Or did the band make that decision so as to not piss off audiences?
Announcer: "Ladies and gentlemen . . . ANIMAL COLLECTIVE!"
Crowd: "ROAAOAOAOR!"
[Josh and Brian step on stage]
Crowd: [Low murmuring and disappointed sighs]

Doubt it, they didn't even bill themselves as Animal Collective at the glasslands show when it was Avey, Deakin, and Kria Brekken

Yet Avey + Geo = AC as shown by Meeting of the Waters.

It must be an expectations thing. The gang is still doing Painting With shows so they probably don't want people to show up expecting that arrangement.

Grimes and Fov are right I think. With Meeting of the Waters they still made it clear who was on the recording, it makes more sense to have a press release thing about a studio release, and for people to read that or listen before paying for it. So there's not as much pressure to have a kind of disclaimer right in the artist listing.
Also, this is more of an aside but I assume with Glasslands they might have wanted to emphasise that it was more of an even collaboration between Kria and the boys rather than be like 'ANIMAL COLLECTIVE and also Kria Brekkan'. Plus Avey and Kria was also its own established act at that point too.
If Panda and Deakin and Scott Mou, or Avey and Panda and Eric Copeland played together, especially at a close time to a Jane or Terrestrial Tones release, that would be a similar situation I guess.
Anyway I don't think they're as concerned about consistency as some of us are.
Otherwise Centipede Hz and Painting With would have had exactly one S in the title

Well several albums of theirs have multiple Ss and Animal Collective themselves count Hollindagain as a core release.
Checkmate, atheists.
Edit: hey was Sung Tongs just reissued or something? My local FYE never has their stuff and they just happened to have three copies of this today.

Hard to say but do you guys think AC have a Moon shaped Pool record in them? Always You, Glasslands, From a Beach, Sponge Luke et al cropping up

I think they do but it will be all songs that they've been kicking around for years that we've never heard before

I don't want A Moon Shaped Pool record from AC. Radiohead has that territory covered. I want my mind blown with Animal Collective material.

that isn't a Moon Shaped Pool thing, that is a Radiohead thing, almost all of their albums contain at least one song written originally for a previous album and/or played live years ago
that doesn't seem to be in AC's wheelhouse, considering they have always been about looking forward (though that has slipped, quite purposely, in recent years)

I agree with Pan actually.
Buuuuut it would be so cool to have a compilation or something of their unreleased/unofficially released material. Like, a true physical release.

Didn't AMSP have a bunch of old songs though? Burn the Witch, Identikit, Ful Stop, True Love Waits... I dunno, I guess I had the wrong idea. Seems like a really reflective record but I'm not, like, huge into them so Im possibly way off.

I'm not holding out for an AC rarities comp but it would be sweet to get some soundboards of old shows, or any unseen footage from Danse era (I think Avey said he filmed a lot back then?)

Between the direction of the recent solo releases, MOTW, and unexpected live resurrections (pride and fight, alvin), I agree with you. do you think that's because they're nostalgic for the past? once again interested in making the sort of music they used to? recognizing that a lot of the fans love them most for their older style of music (even though it's unlike them to admit that)? a little bit of all of those? none of them?

I would absolutely love to see them make material like they did on Spirit and HCTI, but with all the new technology and their new experience.
