It is for sur a live recording, but it's still pretty cool that they released this for everyone to listen. A live recording of unreleased songs they will never play in full form is pretty cool. I see it more as a bonus.
Also brings some hype to AC for the new Panda Bear record.

Psyched for this release from the band, ears burning for crispy mix, hope there's overdubs too or some studio wizardry also.... listening to Oddsac for buildups

Yeah for sure Stan. Still hope they do a double LP proper some day.

For those who have heard this stuff, what's it like? Vocals?

Would be cool if one LP is live and the other LP is studio. Either way I'm excited! I've listened to the boots a handful of times so I know what to expect but I don't remember the songs well enough to have demo-itis.

I listened to maybe half of the Coral Orgy boot but I can only remember the beginning of one of the songs. Seems solid I was just hanging on for a better boot and it seems here it comes!

I don't think it's gonna be a double album as in 2 completely separate discs with different performances. I think it's just a 2xLP. Based on the 2 live performances, it seems like the piece is long enough that it can't be pressed to a single record without losing volume/sound quality (it's over the typical limit of ~45 min), so that's why it's a 2xLP "double album". I was trying to say this in one of my posts on the previous page but I don't think I phrased it clearly

Hot take: Tangerine Reef will be a low-key, ODDSAC-esque release without major marketing buzz, and 2019/2020 will see the next “traditonal” LP that’ll feature tracks from Music Box Village.

Agree with this prediction completely. Also, Coral Morphologic already confirmed we'd be getting this later in summer, so this isn't really new news, just more official I suppose with a release date

But yes, I think this will function more as an appetizer to the next studio meal. The timing will give Panda a chance to decide if he is going to contribute to the new studio recording. I think some of the Music Box Village Deakin-led stuff will wind up on his sophomore album if that is the case, and they may rework some of the MBV stuff with Panda if he joins in for the next studio release. Then when MBV has cash flow or launched the kickstarter to help pay to edit the footage, we'll get a bonus video on YouTube/Vimeo from that show.

All of that being said, I really enjoy the Tangerine Reef music. It's a little more chill, ambient, and drone giving me MOTW meets TTG vibes. I hope they throw in a DVD of the visuals because after watching the YouTube fan vid, they fit really nicely together.

The mega hype will come for that MBV material though I would presume. There are some heavy hitters in those songs for sure.

Ya but like a double album "conceptually" rather than physically. Like one side Geo and panda fucking rocks off a disused winnebago and side two deak and Avey smoke dmt playing Scrabble

Tangerine Reef is a studio recording but its essentially a live performance similar to the two shows we have played with this material. There are no overdubs or extreme variations.

YES. Studio quality but not polished and overdubbed to death will be a breath of fresh air for an AC release. This should be good.

I'm down for this but I hope there's more than enough vocal tracks and not mostly instrumental. I'll be happy either way.

Tangerine Reef is a full-length audiovisual album by Animal Collective (Avey Tare, Deakin and Geologist) in collaboration with Coral Morphologic, to commemorate the 2018 International Year of the Reef, to be released Aug 17, 2018 on Domino. Tangerine Reef is a visual tone poem consisting of time-lapse and slow pans across surreal aquascapes of naturally fluorescent coral and cameos by alien-like reef creatures (note: no CGI or artificial enhancement was used in this film). More info at: http://tangerinereef.myanimalhome.net

Watch the music video directed by John McSwain and Coral Morphologic for “Hair Cutter” on Apple Music here: http://apple.co/haircuttervideo

it's an audiovisual album but the vinyl doesn't come with a dvd or anything. i wonder if there's a way to get the whole experience if you buy the record or if you have to get the visual part separate?

Yeah idgi, I don't see any info about the visual component besides the music vid for Hair Cutter. There's some looped visuals on this page at least http://tangerinereef.myanimalhome.net/
Maybe once the album is out they'll stream the full visuals on that page? Still though even if they're waiting til release date to give us the visuals I would've hoped for a DVD bundled in, would've gladly paid more

Anyway I don't mean to complain, v psyched this is getting released!! Hair Cutter sounds dope
