should prob be in the unpopular opinions thread, or even in any non Avey thread (lol) but, to respond to this convo, to me some of the big problems with PBVSGR were presentation and sequencing.
I honestly think Lonely Wanderer and Come to Your Senses are too long and repetitive and really kill the momentum and take up far too much time/space on the MAIN album. on top of that Mr. Noah already exists on the ep and so feels redundant on the LP, and Davy Jones and Shadow are fairly pointless.
The main album should have been released first and 1 follow up ep should have been released with all the leftovers. it's a tried and true formula ac have used, and i dont think it would have been overusing it here. releasing it in the way he did felt both too sprawling and overwhelming, while also creating redundancies that should have been consolidated better.
I honestly feel now that this collection of songs would have benefitted from just grouping the best and mostly the upbeat songs on the main album, and making the ep the more ambient tracks as well as the quirky songs like lisbon zoo and cosplay. it usually seems like a good idea to mix the slow and fast tracks all together and this plan might seem counterintuitive, but i think this material seems to uniquely demand greater focus and separation in its presentation. or really its just what i find myself preferring for it.
So I would have done something like almost all bangers plus Tropic on the main album. Material this THICK and sprawling cant afford to bog down in the main stretch.
something like:
PBVSGR:
Sequential Circuits
Mr Noah
Butcher Baker Candlestick Maker
Crosswords
Boys Latin
Selfish Gene
Principe Real
Untying the Knot
Faces in the Crowd
Tropic of Cancer
Acid Wash
Jabberwocky
some of those songs are a toss up and it could most likely be improved by having at least one less track, making it a sleeker 11 songs, but i havent been able to decide the final cut yet. you get the idea i think.
Then the EP would be more ambient and quirky, made for zonin out. still great songs! not hating
This Side Of Paradise
No Mans Land
Lonely Wanderer
Come to Your Senses
Lisbon Zoo
Cosplay
obviously some of these choices could be switched. but this material is so overwhelming sometimes, there needed really to be more streamlining and more purposeful presentation (i know, it WAS purposefully presented), less bogging down with slow patches in the middle and too much of everything.
some songs just should have been shorter and had less repetition as well. i think theres no getting around that personally. the production did tend to become a slurry of sound after long stretches of many repetitions and minimal variations too. the instrumental accompaniments should have been more varied and more sharply differentiated, and sometimes the vocals feel like they should be clearer or louder.
i love this material a lot at times, but i also dont feel a lot of desire to come back to it very often. it feels overwhelming and sometimes claustrophobic. i have to say my love for Tomboy and Person Pitch and Young Prayer and Panda Bear are more real than my love for this, though there are many really great songs in here. I love when I do go back to it and remember how great it is. I'd have preferred clearer and tighter presentation one way or another. more clear and thematic grouping. give the album and ep clear and differing characters/thematics! fewer repetitions and maybe less thick recording/production. though sometimes it's nice to sink my teeth into and kinda half drown in.

the new songs are great, but some tracks feel a little unfinished yet, like uncle doughnut
still dont believe how he never released slow words, that song cold me a great single, even as a ac song, super catchy.

ya wtf did that panda digression come from holy hell.
super stoked for any new avey stuff. slasher came out during a pretty bummer time in my life and i loved it then but now its kind of hard to hear. but boy is the prospect of new avey solo stuff always exciting. more exciting than pb solo stuff at this point given that pbvsgr era seemed to last an eternity and since yal want to compare them so badly apparently. dammit now im doing it. #teamavey?

I couldn't agree more. The first 2 1/2 minutes of that song is just painful.

lol what????? you guys are nuts!!! friendship bracelet is like, third best behind benfica and scheherazade!!! def one of the most interesting panda songs in my opinion.
but real talk--disc one from the new avey stuff is shockingly good for a song about getting a collector's cd set or something! generally psyched and into the combo of droney guitar and simple and catchy beats.

Agree with those saying Disc one is awesome. With some seemingly pedestrian lyrics lol

Sounds like he is just talking about some multi disc rare box set or something. Maybe "the wall" on CD

i thought he nailed the man speaking backwards parts, but agreed on the lack of woman vocalizing.
kind of interesting...i feel like 8-9 is sort of the sweet spot that the guys find with working out new jams before going on tour. that was about how many slasher flicks had written whenever they went on tour in 2013. panda maybe had a couple more than that but not much more when he did the pbvsgr early shows, and now avey has ~8 new jams here. CHz era had a few more, butin general it seems to be a trend and then they go back and add a few more later on that either weren't finished at the time the touring started or that were written in the studio.

I used to post with the best of them. I'd get on this forum every morning before first period and every night before bed. I was in the Top Ten posters. Something of a legend around here: genuine, kind, funny. I counted many of you among my friends. This place meant something to me. The four souls named Animal Collective would post here too, in the good days. Avey answered my question about "Always You." It was good.
Now, after years away, only occasionally posting in the Videodrome and Music realms, I return here, to the top half of the forum. What was once a vivid, pure zone of exchange. Open to growth, but focused, like the genetic instructions for a beautiful flower. Detours would occur, but a kind heart would redirect the discussion or, most amazingly, enfold the detour into the conversation.
But here I am, READING ABOUT NOTHING BUT FUCKING PANDA IN A AVEY THREAD. TWO PAGES OF THIS SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IS THERE NEW AVEY MUSIC??!?!?!?!?!?!?! I LOVE AVEY SO FUCKING MUCH.
I'm going back to Everything Else
