i'm sure the band, like most supporters of the HRC, are unaware of this, which is part of why the HRC sucks so much (they are basically the sole representative of "LGBT interests" in the US (despite not actually representing the T part))

Yes, promoting awareness. Because there are people who are old enough to be AC fans who have no idea what gay marriage is.

Aren't you being a little cynical? If this was the 1960s and you had a semi-popular band, would you not feel somewhat obligated to use your popularity as a platform for discussing civil rights and other important issues?
Sorry for dissenting but IMO, we should all be passed this "shut up and sing" mentality. Great artists and performers tend to be candid about a lot of personal things so why leave political and moral views out the picture?
