Merriweather is my 2nd fav album ever and this sounds generally as exciting to me as those tracks felt at first. lol I picture elven spirits grappling around in like a donkey kong country tree fort environment in some epic chase and anco gravely narrates the goings ons.

it definitely feels different in this song, they've never done a bouncy, clean piano line like this before

the piano at the beginning of "did you see the words" isn't bouncy and clean? those are its two most fitting adjectives imo haha

fuck lol. okay i need to learn better words to describe what i mean. it's like whimsical or some shit

It sounds like a cheesy cellphone ringtone lol

I like it tho

just gotta say i have great respect for all of you who engage with music on such a deep, focused level and are able to draw insights out of these songs and pick the songs apart and interact with all the different pieces of the songs

it's beautiful

it's what puts listening to music on a totally different level of enjoyment and fulfillment

keep going!

The track didn't blow my mind, but neither did FloriDada at first. I dig the super tightly woven vocal layers, and hearing the saxophone on an AC record is mad fascinating. I wonder how John Cale will end up contributing to this album?

holy fuck that video is amaaaaazing

the overtones, the circular breathing, the voicing

I thought there was a separate rhythm section but it's just the keys hitting the body of the sax.

this guy is a genius

I played this instrument in high school. He's killin it and he's circular breathing and that's pretty hard so major props to him.

Just downloaded and listening now. I like it a lot. The flute/sax reminds me of something Burial would sample.

If you wanna know, they have talked about it a fair amount in interviews lately...
Spoiler: show
They brought him in to do viola drones on Hocus Pocus, and he ended up laying down some synth stuff as well, presumably on that track

i've listened to that colin stetson video so many times

someone in the youtube comments said "it sounds like a stoner metal guitar riff" and i think that's pretty accurate

you guys really gotta check out colin stetson if you've never listened to him before. "new history warfare vol. 2: judges" is a must

I think listening to this on my phone without headphones and playing with the app first was detrimental to my first impression (my fault, but I probably wasn't the only one who did this). Feeling it a lot more now with headphones and no distractions.

^This^

I played the app for an hour and a half before plugging in headphones. I was astonished at how many people were saying they liked it over Floridada. I'm starting to get the love now

Did anyone else immediately and completely fall in love with this song?

Granted I take ingestion of new AC pretty cereal; I paused my day and popped on my Sony MDR-1As and turned the volume to 11, closed my eyes and blasted off...

It took all of 20 seconds and I was completely hooked, and I remember with each passing section of ascending into hyper melody and descending into muddy discord I thought, "yes... Yes! YES! AWYEEE!! *full on eargasm* ".

Anyone else get that?

he start the song makes its empty space extremely obvious, then the outro fills that space the song created

Totally, this really hits it Archie....
There's so much that 'happens' is this song but the flow is perfect, as complex as Chz era but refined.
Gonna love this album :flail:

asked avey on insta who did what vocally and he just got back to me. confirmed him singing first syllables followed by noah on the response. whew, not crazy. also, he confirmed live drums on tour, though given the recent developments re: jer hy i suppose thats unsurprising.

I found the sax noodling really funny the first time I heard it, like it's almost Tim and Eric level of crapness mixed with absurdity. I mean absolutely no disrespect by that because they've obviously chosen to have him play some pretty meek and meandering weird little trill. It just happens to have blindsided me because the way the track slows to beckon in the instrumental break makes you feel he's going to blast through the mix with this powerful driving melodic line like THE BIG MAN CLARENCE CLEMONS but it comes in like Sarah Palin's drunken fart, uptight and squeaky but escaping the vain clutches of her clenched anus because she's eaten some dodgy frijoles. Wait, why do I have an absolutely throbbing erection right now?

that's what I mean, two guys up above me were talking about how they listened to the song on cell phone speakers first and weren't so into it, and I was just saying it's funny that they even tried to form an opinion on it from a cell phone speaker listen. sorry, wasn't very clear

i think the sax is great, such a different kinda sound than we're used to on an AC track. i love how it wiggles through the air (kinda like some farts i guess?)
