It's a shame AC hasn't released instrumental mixes, like PB did with Tomboy, because I would be really interested to hear an instrumental version of this album

But can we appreciate that a 7.4 on p4k is a pretty good score for anything that would follow MPP?

Anyway, its definitely not a bad record, and I wish I'd gotten to be more tuned into the rollout, those radio broadcasts sounded so cool. Even if CHz was as bad as some folks seem to suggest, any album that gave us the 2012-2013 tours is worth existing based on those shows alone.

I probably listen to it least of all their albums

but I was so stoned and excited for the radio premier countdown night that during "New Town Burnout" I was riding with the wake angels

I snubbed this thread at the time as I do not like to be the butt of the joke.

I would have voted for APOCALYPSE ALLEN.

I was thinking about Strawberry Jam recently and it occurred to me: I really wish Centipede, and Painting With too actually, only had 9 songs. I already like them, but I bet I would like them more with less songs.

I like Centipede. I think of CHz as a rock album, the most straightforward album they've recorded.

AC got their big breakthrough with MPP, clearly bigger than Feels, and then released the epic Crack Box the year after which I think people took as a sign that they were going to return to a more experimental sound. When Centipede turned out to be a collection of more regular songs with verses and choruses, yet lacked the laidback lofi chill hip hop beats to study to feeling that some parts of MPP has, people were put off and didn't notice that the album actually contains really fine songwriting.

Don't get me wrong, I adore MPP and think that it's one of the best albums ever recorded, I'm just saying that I'm not surprised that the ambience of MPP speaks to a wider audience compared to CHz's caffeine OD'd existential anxiety trip. Which I also adore.

Rant over.

CHz was only disappointing because of the crazy upward trajectory of the five albums that came before it. it was the first time when their newest album (rightfully) wasn't hailed as the best thing they've ever done. but taken out of that context it's a really enjoyable psych-rock album

I didn't particularly care for the sound palette they worked with but mainly just felt like the album was lacking in melody and that the songwriting wasn't up to par. It's grown on me a bit but isn't up there with anything pre-chz. PW was back on track for me and it was somewhat of a reinvention, like my favorite albums of theirs.

HCTI -> ST was like whoa
ST-> Feels was like whoa
Feels->SJ was less whoa but like hey panda's the lead singer on some tracks in a new way and man they are so poppy now thats interesting
SJ->MPP skeptical at first but a big leap forward and great songs, big reinvention from SJ
MPP->CHz sounded like a regression to me. An album of B-sides from the lost follow up to SJ.

To me this was a serious jump--in style and writing. SJ blew me away when it came out, probably because it was so raw and wriggling compared with Feels which has some really mellow tunes.

I think someday STongs, Feels, and SJ will all be considered perfect 10s. Jury's still out on MPP....

These new albums pale in comparison though Chz is growing on me, wonder if PW ever will...

Fair, it was quite a jump sonically and stylistically.

From what I understand AC considers Oddsac the followup to MPP and if you think CHZ following that it makes more sense.

I think the "busyness" is what puts people off about the album. Also there was very few Panda songs, who lotta of the new crop of fans from the MPP wave thought was AC's only singer. Aveys vocals/songwriting style can be off putting for people.

I don't think that's true, did they say that somewhere?

They worked on MPP and Oddsac right during the same time period, like 06-08 so I don't think it's necessarily accurate to say it's a follow up

Yeah I've def heard people say before that "logically" it makes sense to see Oddsac as the successor to MPP

I think from a fans perspective it's easy to map out a logical progression from the sound of one album to another, which is fine but doesn't necessarily mean it's accurate to how the band progressed in their writing/recording processes. It's like how Campfire Songs only came out a year before Sung Tongs and stylistically they're similar but the Campfire Songs project dates back to years before that, so it might not be as closely related as it first seems

I cant recall what interview I read it under but they did talk about how people were upset with the drastic turn of oddsac not being poppy like MPP and people coming up to them asking "do you hate us?" or something like that. I felt like I read an interview where they did correct the interviewer about whether or not centipede hz was the followup to MPP but I couldnt find it when I searched for it.

Oddsac and TTG will always be completed works and their next chronological phase before Centipede Hz, in my mind even though they weren't albums proper. They still wrote, arranged and created it and played TTG after MPP live.

I guess "follow-up" is a ambiguous term. Does it mean literally what artistic work was produced and delivered chronologically or does it mean the next follow up LP that was recorded just for music playback on CD/Vinyl/etc? This band definitely has era's (their EPs are usually closely tied to the LP release around them) and I see the oddsac/TTG era after MPP and before CentHz. But if you are talking strictly LP releases with EPs surrounding them it goes MPP > Cent.Hz

The idea of someone not liking this album because "it's too different from their previous work" blows my fucking mind.

Even someone who likes it claiming it has a radical new sound seems weird to me. But I guess it's very subjective what sounds new or different and what doesn't.
