I'm listening to Water Curses right now, so I'll get back to this thread when I'm done

Mm I liked it. No real standout track like their other short releases but its all good. Probably a grower too

I would disagree. Water Curses itself is obviously an enormous standout track, completely different to anything else on the EP and quite different to anything else they'd ever done previously. I think only Applesauce is working in similar areas.
I disagree that this is better than SJ but I do think it's right up there and I would love to have more songs which explore this sonic world. I feel that the title track is a tiny bit too 'big' to fit on SJ and the other three might just lack a tiny bit of the energy of the album but to someone who loves both already, I think they all slot in marvellously in a playlist. The SJ+WC+Safer playlist is probably as good as I've heard from any music.

yay
yeah I like the fact that I don't have a song on there that I like way more than the others... well... really, I guess I just like the fact that I appreciate all the songs.

Hell yeah. I think this works equally well with Feels + Grass + People.

To me Safer is my favorite song off of these 3 records (SJ, Safer, WC). The transitions, lyrics, and samples are all amazing and Avey brings his A-game vocally. Such an emotive song for me. Same goes for Street Flash, my favorite off Water Curses.

I must not get Safer yet, cause it's so lame to me. the chanty end sounds like something they would have done when they where young and barely figuring out how to do cool jammy outros. and the lyrics in the first part sound really try hard artsy to me. can someone help me figure it out??

Well first off I have no idea what you mean by chanty end sounds? He stops singing and the vocal loop slowly fades out. Which is actually my only problem with the song, it ends very nonchalantly.

To me the end of the song is like that of a thunderstorm it just goes away leaving all but a rainbow, its quiet and too a point melancholic. I honestly couldn't see the song ending the in a grand/out-spoken way like other AC songs.

Its the best song but its not like Fall be Kind where its existence is basically justified by What Would I Want Sky

i dont think anything on water curses should be on sj, not even considered to be, at least in the form they are on the release. the songs feel like brothers to each other, even the same being. this is the same feeling as feels for me, but water curses is to me, a world tucked away in the universe of animal collective by itself.
i dont think water curses stands out? its watery synths and buried vocal effects work perfectly as the start. the starting synths introduces u to the tone and feelling of the song while the samples coupled with the synths show the tone of the whole ep. just because it is more layered and energetic than the rest doesnt mean it doesnt fit. but obviously this whole argument is useless because when it comes down to it, whether a song fits on an album or not is determined by if its just feels right or not. and it def does to me

I really think strawberry jam is more consistent and has really never gotten oldp, I think it is more eclectic and loose but...iono for right now I think SJ is probably their most interesting record

the only thing i included was meet the beatles! cause i felt the later albums needed to be where they were so i needed one filler album

i can't agree with some of those changes though... some are improvements
there's something so revolvery about strawberry jam. the dry crispness.

Am I the only one who thinks "Street Flash" is the best song on WC by a good bit? I love the entire EP, but that song is just something special.
I've been listening to Strawberry Jam more than any other AC release lately, and I agree that it's one of the best psychedelic albums of the 2000s. For me, it might be the most lyrically strong album in the AC catalog. Peacebone through Fireworks is just an incredible streak of wonderfully written music. If the back half included Safer and perhaps a song or two from WC, SJ would probably be my favorite AC album.

The Greatest. Although I said that Water Curses was the stand-out track, I meant it more that it's massively catchy and energetic compared to the other three but this is the one for me. I will regularly do the opening echoed stabs out loud when life goes a little quiet. Beautifully sparse. So atmospheric. It's exactly this sense of space which I would love them to reintroduce.
Oh, I like a walk.

That makes perfect sense. When I first heard the EP, the title track definitely grabbed my ear the most. But "Street Flash" slowly took residence in my ear and now has no intention of leaving.
