We used some samples of people who are not so easy to deal with. It has been a lengthy process. We used samples from people like The Everly Brothers and The Drifters, little loops over which we recorded the record.

[The samples] are horribly expensive. They take a big chunk of the profits, it's completely disproportionate. But the record was born from a conversation with Noah [Lennox, aka Panda Bear] and from an idea of ​​mine that was to take the beginnings of some amazing songs, the ones where you hear the first chords and you know they're going to be fantastic, and loop for upon which we built the songs. I sent him these loops and he started writing amazing stuff. Lyrically, it's his best work. And even the singing and writing of the songs is very special, very refined and different. Perhaps they are the most traditional things he has ever done.

Of course it's Panda Bear, so it's never going to be completely traditional [laughs]. But we sang the two together. I've always loved doo-wop and that kind of music where the most important thing is the voices and a little percussion, some clapping or something. We wanted to make a record like this, with super good vibes, reminiscent of Jamaican ska and rocksteady music, around 65, 66, 67, which was born in a messed up social and political context, but had great vibes. Of course, despite all these references, it's still my and Panda Bear's record, and it sounds like us. It's really good. I've shown it to 40 or 50 people and the reactions have always been amazing. Which was what we wanted.

Another Q about Danger, if you’d be willing to share, Pete: someone noted the melodic similarity between Danger and Little Joy’s Keep Me in Mind. Is it an interpolation? Sounds like a great candidate for some doo-wop vibe

Yes . Danger (love of my life) is super present .. a favourite of mine too
It’s interpolated with the Everly bros only . But that major to minor chord thing ....for sure has it’s own scale .
Not all the songs have samples in - About half of them .

Summery Panda Bear is my favourite Panda Bear!! (Though I love his sadder songs a lot too), Sonic would you say this could be a Person Pitch 2.0 what with the samples and summery vibe? Or is it its own thing? Thanks!

it’s it’s own thing . Person Pitch is totally unique . It’s connected for sure via the sample beds , but this record has a lot of percussion too & vocal contrast . Latin heat , passion & a sort of sci-fi propulsion . Our plan was always to donate to sociological wellness in any way we could thru this record & I think we got super lucky .... we’re both itching to drop it ....
