Im definitely glad they released a chunk of that show! Even when I watched just the bootlegged version on YouTube I was so amazed of the show! I'd really love for them to release it in full. I was kinda hoping that the album was going to stay closer to the shows vibe of being more spacey and droney like that.
And as someone mention how defeat from the music box is more of an incomplete version, I still really love it. Especially that middle part. I absolutely love those lyrics and when he kept it for the 2019 tour I was convinced that they weren't going to change. And I know he doesn't ever seek out fans opinions and kinda goes with how he wants it to be But a part of me hopes he has a change of heart and goes back to them for the studio version. I just feel like the lyrics are kinda on the weak side. Not even just that but I guess what bothers me is that it's the same couple lines just being repeated, where the OG lyrics kinda told a little story and they were just so much more fun

since Tangerine Reef, bridge to quiet and this surprise release I just love that they've been returning to that more exploratory sound, really feels like they have been revisiting that danse-hcti stretch, this album feels like hollindagain 2.0 , almost like if they put these songs out on a 'canon' album it would make that release be viewed as a 'low key release' or something as i think tangerine reef was taken, but that kind of style is really why i love them as a band and the fact we are getting this kind of stuff again is so good

the time skiffs singles are the sorta recordings that are screaming for your attention, everything is played operfectly and it always sounds full, thjeres not much dynamics or expression. this stujff is the opposite

even the 2019 boots were sick, they sounded vulnerable and open.. idk. less is more powerful sometimes. but thats just me . why change the lyrics of passerby you know?

i get you, i do think some of the changes to the songs since 2019 feel like change for change's sake. car keys for example, "sing your song and fly on by/and if you stayed a while we wouldn't mind/lately i've been wondering/why'd you leave us, golden rush?" was kind of a perfect chorus wasn't it?

I feel this exactly. Makes me wish they would go back to just quickly recording stuff they’re toying with like they used to instead of spending years polishing it and turning it into something else. They’ve almost become too good/professional at perfecting a “pop” song in their later years, sometimes it loses something along the way

I think stuff like Tangerine Reef and MoTW shows they still do. Maybe not ‘core’ studio albums but we definitely still get that side of the band.

Forgot how jaw-dropping the Prester John addendum is here. So forlorn and hopeless sounding. Strange that it became this In the Flowers bombastic thing but that's the way it goes I guess.

This whole performance is just pure mystic forest music--AC in their absolute element. Single-handedly saved the band for me (and felt like it came out of nowhere). Showed they hadn't forgotten their roots. For real, these songs are direct descendants of the Spirit to Ark era. I really really hope they get strings involved for the next record and keep the loose spontaneity of these tracks intact.

having to remind myself though that thats the music they like., they like pop music thats well constructed and perfect nd full and compressed 2 shit. which is fine i like some of that stuff too. cate le bon's reward i know avey has mentioned loving and throwing on all the time, even purple mountains record is so so good but suffers from the same 21st century fate,. edspceially when u contrast it with the natural bridge, which is as real as the hardwood body of dc bermans shitty acoustic guitar.
revisiting campfire songs/other music live set recently.... and remembering avey saying offhandedly in other cultures music isnt a career thing but an everyday life thing.. that early stuff and even this music box stuff reminds me of that mode of making music.... idk i think theres a beautifull middle ground (manifested in things like campfire songs, silver jews, can, etc. )
but it feels liketime skiffs is just gonna be an unrelenting record of mixed-for-weeks-perfectly-eq'd-perfectly-doubletracked music. what happened to bolder??? fukin use autotune if u want to!!!!!

they are sonic travelers
always growing
or evolving at least
and i feel like they've come to the point
where they are equals
in how they understand their canon
and their fans' relationship to their material
in a rare, strange, intimate way
which is very 'current' but
more-so, just flat out beautiful.

why is why i love that they truly embrace the fluidity of art in their music and never stop exploring. because we're along for the ride, buckled up beside them, endlessly blasting off into the void of hyperspace

If i had to split the bandcamp recording, I'd say....

Paper Forehead
0:00 - 5:40

Spider Bit My Lady
5:40 - 13:53

What's on the Road? It's Shining
13:53 - 19:11

Who Knows?
19:11 - 28:40

Trikid
28:40 - End

Sweet ya I was... Also if I was sitting then that means this Tri-Kid at least is night 2, the vastly superior night (brought a sick lawn chair). But doesn't seem like the vid description specifies if its all from night 2 or not (I guess one could just track what the dude's are wearing)

also want to make correction to the video's depiction of time: when the set started the sun was still up despite the video looking like its post sundown.... I think I'd remember that. I mean the opener is Sunset with Cecil after all

St. Patricks day in NOLA... can't go wrong. I went home and played my Day w/ the Homies vinyl for Cheyrou who got in late from Houston and missed the whole damn thing (probably wouldn't have gone anyway, not a tru fan). Gr8 nite tho I kinda wish I made it the house party where Geo was spotted doing Whip-its
