Capital Fringe wrote:
Brand new musical trio comprised of Brian Weitz (Geologist of Animal Collective), Jim Thomson, and Marc Minsker. Instrumental krautrock-inspired psychedelic trance rock featuring hurdy gurdy: a medieval instrument that in its basic shape vaguely resembles a violin or a lute, only everything is chunkier, fatter, and it is played differently to other stringed instruments. The group stretches out their songs on the arc of drone that builds, creating layers upon layers of rock and roll euphoria. Each set marks a shift in trajectory, navigating a path unbound by conventional maps.

Geo - hurdy
Jim Thomson - drums (@electriccowbell)
Marc Minsker - guitar/bass (@tendollarcurry)

looks like they've played 6 shows so far, all around DC

I listened to the few tracks they have… they need to do a larger tour or album promoted by Domino or something. It’s so freaking good

Yeah this is so sick. I'm sure it'll still be good but I wish these fall dates were with the band and not mostly solo.

Congaree is so beautiful. Being able to still create such amazing melodies after 25+ years of career is beyond me.

The Domino Publishing part is interesting? Does that mean this is coming straight from Domino rather than in a compilation like Brown Thrasher/Congaree

There is nothing under performers - could this be the collaborative thing they were talking about a while ago?

It's from the score they did for a documentary about the American involvement in the war in Afghanistan that's coming out (it would appear) relatively soon.

Just the above and that it's supposedly coming out this year. Avey mentioned it during our interview with him about the Fast Lea EP earlier this year but we cut it out because it wasn't relevant (*to that cast).

What do y’all remember about your first listens of Down There? I think no other AC-related release has been so perfectly timed. Didn’t it come out a week or so before Halloween? Incredible. I lived at the time near a university in the section of town where students lived. I remember walks at night with Down There, students coming home drunk, the shadows from street lamps, piles of puke, piles of leaves, leaves blowing, molding. I love the cheesecloth album art—Abby did it, right?—and how the LP is like a 1/4 inch taller than every other LP I own. Is Down There a perfect record?

AC are masters of many things, one of which is timing up their releases for the right season.

Down There is a total success in that it achieves everything Avey set out to do. in terms of atmosphere created then sustained, a masterpiece. the highs are minimal but that's because it's so downcast and vibey -- the lows are non-existent. simply put, it is a very consistent record, very vibey and a perfect sustained mood. a song like "Cemeteries" is perfect, but it's so ethereal. the album is the sonic equivalent of the swamp, both literally and figuratively. it conveys so much emotion, perhaps more than any other record in the AC universe. Avey was totally locked in for this record. "Laughing Hieroglyphic" is my favorite song from the project.

i admit i was not a fan of the record upon its release. AC had such a hot streak of really dynamic and exciting records that i went in expecting to be blown away by all kinds of textures and colors and go on this crazy journey through Avey's mind when i totally misread the situation or knew what i was getting into. on its own terms, it's a fantastic little record. 34 minutes of dark thick psychedelic swamp music.

seasons are relative to where you live too - obviously folks in the southern hemisphere would have a very different take on the matter

one time, someone asked avey to describe every album with one word, and for MPP he said "rain"

that album is full of wet sounds. i live in vancouver, all it does in january is rain.

personally, I like that they brush off the R bomb as a "different time" (it wasn't). and that they were 23 (well old enough to know better)

One of my good friends is partly color blind and used to work at a video store in 2005 (damn i'm old) and his job was to put the dvds in the right genre shelf based on what color sticker was on the cover. But he couldn't tell purple from blue and ended up putting all the Arnold Schwartznegger movies in comedy. The boss wasn't having it, so my bro got hasta la vista'd, baby.

My local record store guys forgot to put in the order when I requested they snag me a copy months ago. No worries just gotta wait a little longer.

BUT

He did tell me Domino was about to announce something that I would be excited about for limited release at brick and mortars on October 15 (odd day for music release)… wasn’t allowed to disclose but they know me as the Animal Collective guy, so we might be getting something more very very soon (I’m hoping)!

Fingers crossed for Music Box, or Campfire Songs. He did ask me what my favorite album was... maybe CS or ODDSAC re-release? Who knows if this is even real

Also what’s this Spree song mentioned in the Stereogum interview/song-by-song?

Spree is from the Bug Mall soundtrack

edit: nvm, just read that piece and saw the full context, it does sound like they're referring to a different song and just reused the title.

The original lyrics to “screens” were “why am I chewing sprees”
