Murky vibes are good, this is just uninspired and aimless mixing. There are far more effective ways of bolstering the murky ambiance than by throwing cheesy reverbs on the master bus and ensuring that no individual sonic element demonstrates a specific character cohesive with the others around it.

im guessing these one off singles are much more DIY. Recorded at home by AC then maybe taken to DoS for basic mixing? The budget for a single for a compilation is nowhere close to what is needed for a Isn't It Now tier fidelity.

you don't need high fidelity to make tasteful mixing choices though. everything sound like its hiding behind everything else

So this track was recorded remotely in everyone's home studios with the exception of Geo who is not on the track.

guess i'll be the dissenting voice here, i think the song is super cool!

the synths remind me of tickley feather's 1,2,3.

the last section of the song with the more clear vocals is really sweet with the three voices trading lines.

definitely a murky vibe but i dont think it sounds bad at all

pretty much all self-produced latter-day AC material has sounded oddly murky, which makes it hard to buy that it's "supposed" to sound exactly like that. sounds instead like the sort of signature blindspot that can come with being self-taught. what's also getting to me here is the disorienting slapback echo on the vocals and the way the harmonies just barely don't line up with each other timing-wise. also the downshifted vocals at the end are another one of those now-classic AC late career head scratchers, as is the lyric "love was in a time warp"

but all that grumbling aside i think this is a great little pop tune with a neat arrangement (dig that instrumental melody that happens at 0:25 and throughout) and it deserves a mix that sparkles

i see exactly what you guys are talking about. or hear! there is def a murkiness to a lot of their work. but, i kinda like the song, even if its a bit understated. more on that bridge to quiet vibe. i also really like the lower pitch vocals hahaha

Did you guys listen to the rest of tracks on the the National Parks Album? Our boys are hilariously out of place; it's mostly amiercana/bluegrass/folk stuff.

The part around the 3:30 mark got me geeked rn, I agree with some of the pitch shifted vocals sounding kinda goofy but overall I think this will probably be on heavy rotation and the bits that I wasn't as crazy ab will catch up to me

Yeah I dig the new track. Production is not bad to me in any way that really calls attention to itself, though I can understand any complaints.

It ain't bad but I don't really like how it turned out on the album... 2011 Knock You Down was the best

Haha! No grudges here. But it is (amazing). The last minute or so of Dave screaming over and over, “I make a monkey rich!” Holy shit. I feel like I’m only now coming to understand Centipede Hz a decade-plus after it was released. I mean, in 2012 it was pretty hard to hear it outside of everything that had come before (MPP, etc.). It’s really a deep, special record. And I don’t think the burrito-windshield thing has legs.

Suspend the Time, Brown Thrasher, and Congaree make a tidy little 19-minute playlist.

it's a good song and I love Avey's vocal performance. I just get annoyed by that clattering loop that repeats for the whole song. could've benefitted from a bit more subtlety

finally listened to Congaree, the mixing doesn't really bother me that much and the song is definitely not what I was expecting. very understated and has kinda a barely there quality in terms of melody, not sure if it'll grow on me but I'm compelled to listen more

I used to drive through the San Luis valley in Colorado (where Creston is) all the time. It’s a shame I no longer had a reason to drive through there when the Crestone score came out. That record really does feel like the valley… super weird place with monstrous thunderstorms, llama farms, sand dunes, alien and UFO museums, and the gator from Happy Gilmore

fair critique but I always loved that loop

Also weird link but deakin's guitar part (I think) in the last "make a monkey rich" section reminds me of Bob weir's part in scarlet begonias, where it's all played on the off beats. fits in very nicely to the song but if you try listening just to that part you realise how off-kilter it feels in isolation

Same. Love how un-AC that loop is, how grating and sterile it is. Dave was definitely aspiring for a new sound. I think he realized that sound more fully in his solo records. That might be why “Monkey Riches” really stands out. I mean, it’s this really unsettling combination of rock and techno. I get a very physical dis-ease listening to it.

If you buy the LP you'll receive a digital download from Domino's website. The norm of sharing ripped files has sadly evaporated since streaming has taken over.

That’s too bad, I’m not spending $43 for a high quality version of a radio performance I’ve already heard.
