Isn’t It Now? absolutely lands as a classic, its mix of playfulness and earnestness, glittery pop and tessellated textures seeming to synthesize and update all that has ever made and still makes this band so compelling.

Vast improvement on the live version. Still a weaker track compared to the others imo but I do get it as an opener. Very Feels-y but thankfully moved away from the multi-delayed Feels-y guitar style so it doesn't seem like a re-tread. They mixed the vocals in a reeeaaally nice classic AC way.

More importantly though, BRING ON THE FUCKIN GENIE'S TRANSITION!!!!! You can hear the weird almost wooden clanking at the end that they did at the start of the Sirius live version. So hype.

Initial thoughts:

Fucking love it. Really faithful to the live version. Definitely consistent with Defeat in its more live boy in a room production.

The vocals sound great. So awesome to clearly pick out the three of them.

Love the drum additions.

The first half feels like a perfect prologue for this medieval psych record and the last half is just pure AC psych bliss.

Can’t wait to hear the intro that leads into this.

it's striking how much more life the vocals have on this compared to TS. whether it's just the production or the vibes when recording, probably some of favorite avey vocals in the past 10 years on SC and Defeat

love Broke Zodiac and Gem & I bookending the biggest tracks. and Stride Rite doing the emotional heavy lifting in that 7 spot. so psyched for this album

gonna hold off on listening but the interior artwork is beautiful. Very obviously intentionally evoking feels.

Even just seeing the lyrics to broke zodiac printed gets me all emotional… can’t believe that song will finally be “real” after all this time haha

Got such a big smile seeing that Instagram post. I had no interest in Soul Capturer from hearing the live versions, but I can tell from hearing that snippet that it's gonna be great and they just needed to tighten it up a little.

I was also lukewarm on SC from the boots but this is exactly what I was hoping would happen: tight, punchy, clear studio version that totally elevates the song. The snare adds sooo much to this bad boy.

Agreed that the track lengths look pretty perfect. They didn't skimp on Genie's or Magicians, Possibly sped Kings up a bit from the Tiny Desk version, which is a good thing, and All the Clubs is gonna be concise as fuck. Feel like they may have trimmed the intro to Gem and could maybe have gone longer with Stride but all seems like what it should be.

Lol, it's kind of hilarious that they cut half a minute of intro for SC after dropping defeat on its entirety as a single.
Also SC turned out perfectly! Can't get any more psyched for the full thing! The ending is such a damn tease!

Heard from someone who talked to Noah on ig that they’re trying to do some makeup shows in October. Would be kinda interesting to see reset material live after isn’t it now is out.

Seriously. Some of my favorite Avey vocals ever and it really makes the track for me. There’s a restrained quality here that still brings out so many tones I haven’t heard from him before.

Never cared for SC but insane how the recording brought it all together for me. This is the warmest and most lush they’ve sounded since Feels!

yeah i'm gonna hold off on listening to any of the other songs until this is out. made the mistake of listening to every "single" during the rollout of Time Skiffs, and felt a little bit underwhelmed during my first listen when it came out.

this is great though. i've never been a huge fan of the live boots i've heard, but this sounds great in studio. if this is how the "worst" song of the new bunch sounds, i can't imagine how the rest of this is gonna sound.

Also now that we know that gem and i is gonna be pretty short I wanna highlight the one from Union transfer 2022, really sick piano intro that reminds me of the cure a lot. Kinda figured that part wouldn’t make it on the studio version but definitely worth checking out if you’re not avoiding boots rn.

Just listened to this 3 times in a row. That’ll do for now. It’s late in Aus. Look forward to reading pages of reactions in the morning.

Also glad the Domino spiel doesn’t say anything about these being left overs or whatever. Very much making it clear this is a brilliant album in its own right. Doesn’t mention the relationship between these and the TS songs but maybe that’s deliberate in order to have casual fans approach it as it’s own thing and not a leftovers thing.

well also correct me if i'm wrong, but didn't they record this during December 2021? Time Skiffs was recorded in 2020, so i don't think its from the same recording session.

ACAB only 2 minutes long.. not sure what to expect there, especially since it could be the last proper "song" on the album. Kings is just an acapella piece for the most part right? that's what i remember most from the boots but I've tried to stay away
