I dont know if anyone else can relate to the way I listen to music, but IIN is definitely (imo) a fall record. I’m not saying the album is unlistenable any other time of the year, but the impact of the music is felt more when the air gets chilly and the leaves start to turn red and fall off of the trees. I sometimes associate summer with decay, because of the heat from the sun, so Defeat and Kings Walk has been played a few times recently. But there’s a lot of sounds that feel cold, spooky, and even snug like a knit sweater. I wouldn’t say the album aged badly, it’s just not something that can be played every single day like some of their other albums and that’s okay.

That Congaree snippet was awesome. Avey has really made me see the good side of being a Carolinian boy with everything he’s been putting out since Cows.

The way it was released, Pullhair Rubeye is very boom & bust. When I'm in the mood for it, I am absolutely captivated and transported by the soundscapes and it's a truly psychedelic experience. But more often, it feels antagonist or too inaccessible, a door I can't quite open.
So thanks for the reminder that I can listen to it re-reversed. It's so consistently wondrous, a mystical woodland journey with your two favorite hippie friends who when they speak open new portals in your mind.
I think what could've been cool is if the whole album was reversed except for one song which they placed last on the record. And it would've been the most welcome jump-scare ever to be like, "Wait, this is a folk song... were these all folk songs?"

I dream of an official re-release with it corrected and the vocals added back to Foetus. 5-star album for sure
never gonna happen though

Yup, so sad. When was the last time anyone in the band acknowledged this album's existence? I mean it makes total sense that avey wouldn't want to revisit this music because of the relationship, but the songs are so magical, it's such a shame

it definitely makes sense that avey wouldnt want to revisit it. at this point, the fact that you can only really hear it from one youtube video where someone bothered to reverse and slow it down and add in the missing songs + its obscurity compared to the rest of the AC music world... it all adds to the mystique of the album haha. its got such a dusty, ghostly, off-kilter vibe, but its so beautiful and loving and gentle. such a great secret album

Patiently documenting the installation of new coastal infrastructure in the Rockaways, this observational process story was recorded on 16mm film and features an original score by Animal Collective.
This is so up my alley. Can’t wait to hear what they brought to the project.
Re: General The Animal Collective Talk (...cont'd)
This was really refreshing to hear, man. Really reminds me of that Oddsac era in a way, or even - ala Working or Screens. Also this video may be about The Conference of Birds. Very different production for them, I liked it.

Brown Thrasher is so pretty and so odd at the same time. Really enjoyed that first listen. Classic Avey acoustic meandering. Like a friendly version of ODDSAC's acoustic bits meets 'sky' Eucalyptus/MotW (rather than 'sea' or 'forest').

I was definitely getting some Meeting of the Waters vibed and I loved it. Probably my favorite "score" they have done. It's very good

sounds like all 3 dudes have vocals on it? pretty harmonies throughout but the second half is especially great, reminds me of vocal manipulation off of water curses or down there. overall tangerine reef like production which is weird

Murky vibes are good, this is just uninspired and aimless mixing. There are far more effective ways of bolstering the murky ambiance than by throwing cheesy reverbs on the master bus and ensuring that no individual sonic element demonstrates a specific character cohesive with the others around it.

I agree the mix feels super muddy, which is frustrating cause I think the melodies throughout are really great. Mixed feelings about the second half, usually love anytime they do pitch shifted vocals but some of them sounded a little goofy here. Overall feels a bit like a demo, but the song itself I think is pretty, maybe even very good!

im guessing these one off singles are much more DIY. Recorded at home by AC then maybe taken to DoS for basic mixing? The budget for a single for a compilation is nowhere close to what is needed for a Isn't It Now tier fidelity.

you don't need high fidelity to make tasteful mixing choices though. everything sound like its hiding behind everything else

I try to remember, this band’s biggest influence is, arguably, The Grateful Dead.
