Greg and I spoke with Herald and Deakin about their newly released album "Linear B."
We also got some interesting tidbits regarding "Sinister Grift." Deakin shared more about the release date and also about a B-side that is being released on a 7 inch that is connected to "Sinister Grift."
If you haven't had a chance to check out the "Linear B" album yet, go get yourself some Greek pizza and give'r a listen... it's a fantastic record!

Linear B is so great, this type of thing was a dime a dozen around 15 years ago but this sound has become increasingly rare in recent years, so feels nice. you can definitely tell Deakin produced it

This was enough to just make me order the anniversary pressing from Domino. Love that song - really excited to hear it with a fresh mix on my turntable.

Same here r_o_s_s. It's gorgeous, the background vocals really shine. This mix makes me want to hear them rework Maya like the doo-wop/60s girl group song it is underneath all the production.
Also, not to nitpick, but why is Domino only offering 16/44.1 downloads? Pretty expensive release, it would be nice to have a 24/48 copy.

I assumed most people genuinely can't hear the difference between 320kbps mp3s and CD quality, let alone the difference between CD quality and something even higher than that? That could be the reason
Anyway, would anyone be kind enough to crunch my nuts or whatever the cool kids are calling it these days? From a Beach has always been one of my favourite jams and I'd love to hear a better mix of it.

Not sure what you're talking about? I downloaded the WAV HD files at 24 bit/44.1 kHz. FLAC HD is also available.

Just wanna chime in and say that I think Domino really buried the lede here by not mentioning that they are FINALLY offering MPP in 24-bit wav, free with the vinyl! I fully expect people to think I'm crazy, but it sounds clearly better to me. For what it's worth, I'm an audio engineer and I do have a really fantastic monitoring system, but I can notice it in my car too.
In theory, those extra 8 bits shouldn't typically matter a whole lot. That's usually just "low level" information, which typically just amounts to detail in reverb tails and spatial cues, and other subtleties like that. But this album is a rare case where the reverb and space is a HUGE part of the sound. I did a bunch of A/B listening and I can parse out details in the verb and some of the stuff that's further back in the soundstage much better. It also helps to localize certain sounds too.
Weirdly enough, when I compare the 16 and 24 bit waveforms I notice some differences in the transient peaks, which could mean that limiting and/or truncation are also causing some slight distortion differences.
Whatever it is, I'm really enjoying this record all over again, and that's all that matters.

Okay serious question for any musicians in this thread. Little back story, not to be TMI, but i recently went through a really huge break up and the past week I’ve had a realization that music is what I’m really passionate about and what I want to spend my life doing. Right now I’m listening to the Tangerine Reef cassette and that is the type of music I want to make. I’m noticing the numerous samples, I’m sure that’s not hard to do, but like… where do I go from here? Where should I start? What should I learn first? What’s the right direction to start for someone who hasn’t done anything with music since 2018?
Any advice is helpful, just feeling very stuck and lost. It’s been very hard to think straight. Once I get an idea, I sort of just freeze. Sorry if this is a lot lol

Find sample, paste it in DAW, listen to what you’re supposed to do with it. It’s not about “your” ideas. Great songs were always going to be made
I think maybe music is the only thing one can really materially do in this life. Channeling eternal transmissions. All other mediums are great because they’re musical. All of life beautiful only because of harmony, sublimity discordance, tension, release, the ecstasy of overtone

Okay so, damn... "From a Beach" sounds AMAZING. Someone said it, but this basically satisfies my desire for a studio version for how wondrous this slinks and bounces across the soundstage. Song is a classic, and now to hear it in this quality is a true gift for 2024.

"From A Beach" always sounded like Outkast to me, which is a huge praise in my book. "Vertical" as well. Can't wait to hear the polished version. Tried to see if Domino allowed a download of it by itself, but nah. I feel like a kid that wants a certain cereal just to get the toy inside it. Throwback to when they Hellogg/General Kills was getting kids hooked on sugar for a Hotwheels. Guess they still have the cartoon characters, so maybe not much has changed.

Just work on music every day. 1-2 hours is all. Sit down and plonk something out on a keyboard. Learn another song you love. Steal the chords and write your own version. Goof around on a synth. Make a bloopy slimy glitchy loop and throw a random drum beat behind it. Add some lyrics on top. Watch a Youtube video about mixing. Challenge yourself. Move into a loft. Start making your own hummus, Listen to... well you know.
