i wonder if it helps to imagine this LP as two conjoined EPs, as given by the spatial distance on the track list (both on the back cover and the website:

EP 1
Soul Capturer
Genie’s Open
Broke Zodiac
Magicians from Baltimore

EP2
Defeat
Gem and I
Stride Rite
All the Clubs are Broken
King's Walk

Alternatively, we could imagine the first track and last tracks as prologue and epilogue, respectively. This would make Genie’s Open the real entrance and All the Clubs are Broken as the final statement, so to speak.

I've been thinking this, too, but with Defeat tagged onto the first set, which would create a 5-song LP. I have a 40-minute drive to work, so 40-minute albums are my ideal. I'm guessing those first five tracks will get a lot of listens and that I'll have to intentionally put on the last four as a separate listening experience.

Surely it's not really called Isn't It Now? Let's wait for the actual announcement.

curious, what makes you think it isn't the title at this point? It's on the album art. It was hashtagged on their album art post on IG yesterday too.

If it is called Isn't It Now does that mean that Defeat will be on the album?

Still think it would be sick (and a better title) if after all this lead up, tomorrow they reveal the title to be "Oh No, Not Now". But that's def not happening.

I've never heard Stride and only heard Kings a couple times so that back half is pretty exciting. And Gem my favourite from this era. It's gonna be so hard not to just skip Defeat heheee

You're in for a treat there if you like Deakin's stuff. It's a good un.

I've only heard most of these a handful of times so I'm interested in how it all turns out. It's going to be very fresh for me.

It's funny that a common criticism of Skiffs was that it was almost too palatable or chill or whatever, indiecast said something about like playing it at a bbq. This one is like "oh you thought the last one was too tame well here's a 22 minute track right in the middle of this thing"

I was in a tea house today and Dragon Slayer came on. My wife was like 'is this Animal Collective?' and I said 'how do you know?' and she said 'you can just tell'. She doesn't listen to AC aside from what I put on in the car and not really into non-pop music but I thought fair play love nice one. This anecdote will probably be in the extended collector's edition of my memoirs.

Ha! That’s awesome.

My wife is subjected to a lot of AC (and other stuff). She’d know it was them without question whether she likes the song or not. Long suffering!

Lovely anecdote Stan. Same here -- Though my wife likes to say that if you play anything at her enough time's she'll end up liking it. The week after the birth of our son we were driving home after a stressful day at the hospital for a check up and she asked me to put on some AC because it's comforting. Usually she tells me I put them on too often. Made me smile

foxtrot, i think you should change the title of this thread to "the album that doesn't have "defeat," but it'll probably still be pretty good"

this is exactly why i am so excited to specifically hear their review of it, even if they don't like it, it's like doing the opposite shit of time skiffs.

that's a good Q -- what's going to be the right environment for this album? it has JAMS, but not like... BBQ jams... it feels extroverted enough not to be a headphones album...surely this will sound GREAT on vinyl, but the proggy and ambient bits mean this is meant for more of a chill listening environment

I made the mistake of playing centipede hz in the car a lot when the wife and I first started dating and it really set her back off the AC she’s come around a little to where she’ll tolerate like MPP and some panda bear but it’s been tough. The kids always enjoy it though

Had a long drive from Portland to Seattle (close to 10 years ago now) with basically a total stranger. He showed me some Death Grips and an Iggy Pop album I never heard. He hadn't heard CHz before and I had the CD. His reaction was lukewarm but I let him keep the CD, maybe he came around to it

i think the right environment might be the Third Impact

At least your wife puts up with it. My partner does not allow me to play Anco with her around. She hates their music for some strange reason I'll never understand. Not to be offensive but she says "it sounds like it's made by mentally handicapped people!" And I'm like "...and your point is??"

That's beautiful denj, congrats.

My partner and I actually bonded over their earlier "golden era" albums (at this point I think they mostly love SJ) but I think CHz was the last release that they actually enjoyed... lukewarm on a lot of PW and seems to reaaalllly not be into a lot of Skiffs era stuff... worst of all, they absolutely hate Cherokee :negative:

i’m lucky enough to have a girlfriend who enjoys AC and especially noah (she often jokes about marrying him). i got a vicarious thrill seeing her jaw drop when he cued the “comfy” sample at the PB/SB show — she wasn’t expecting any person pitch stuff

she is a little bit less tolerant when it comes to my constant IIN? updates, but she still listens patiently and only rolls her eyes here and there

Animal Collective is usually really good at creating catchy / clever titles. I wonder why they’re just calling this one “Isn’t It Now?” At least Fall Behind eventually became Fall Be Kind. They could’ve done something similar with this title
