I really, really love the songs on Time Skiffs, but there’s something about the recording that irks me. It sounds too round, too full, too hygienic maybe. Was it Brian who said they were going for a “scraping metal” vibe (or something like that) on the record? I wish they’d really played that up, wish they’d gone really mental with the metal thing. Really harsh, ugly frequencies like on Danse. And the wonky AutoTune. Wish they’d kept more of it. It really was weird! Guess I’m saying Skiffs coulda been, for the better, a lot weirder.

Yeah, I get why "hygienic" could be used as a descriptor. The phrase often used around the release was "crystalline" -- the water which the skiffs drifted by on were these lucid, sparkling, vivid waters... there's a real clarity and accessibility to the mix, but I agree it would've been cool if they dialed up the harshness. However, the band is not known to repeat themselves... since they had done the harsh frequency thing for Danse it makes sense they tried a new approach. I agree though, would've liked for them to make Skiffs weirder somehow. There isn't much within these songs that sounds 'surprising.' On the other hand, playing it straight for them IS weird.

Loving these tier lists. All of them feel right somehow, ha.

No offense but what's the point of tier lists if you put 20 albums in A tier! Limit it to 3 per tier and see what shakes out.

when you look at the touring dates, particularly around painting with, it's actually completely unbelievable that they were able to squeeze out all the other releases they did between then and 2020. like they must've created tangerine reef in like 2 months tops, what are they for real

They really haven't stopped being prolific. Obviously the number of AC releases was way higher in the 2000s, but the very nature of the band was that all the fragmented side/solo projects were as meaningful as the band projects, and with this in mind the 2010s were every bit as prolific... they were just more scattered in various directions.

2000s
band = 8 studio albums + 2 live albums + 4 EPs
solo = 3 albums
TOTAL = 17 releases

2010s
band = 3 studio albums + 2 live albums + 4 EPs
solo = 8 albums + 5 EPs
TOTAL = 22 releases

2020s
band = 2 studio albums + 2 soundtracks
solo = 2 albums

This song is really good. I love the verse in particular, the way the sounds flicker all over the place. I hope he keeps this type of structure for a few songs, it sounds so good hehe

Lol. I had the same thought. I’m just hoping this means it’s one track from a full Avey project.

I don't know how I feel about it. It feels like a 7s B Side. It's nothing stellar in my opinion, but it could grow on me. The drums and overall rhythm just feel lacking is my biggest issue

Plz Avey/AnCo just release any and all the stuff you want digitally.

Song is a delight, love the transition from verse to chorus and the Panda reverse vocals toward the end

Yes agreed, how many times am I gonna excitedly listen to a new Avey song just to get ran over by this awkward sing-along vibe. Can’t stand his campy-kitschy sensibilities (except when they inform genuine emotion)… Avey is so much better when he’s making “soul music” as panda calls it. What’s the point of music if not catharsis

the point of catharsis is that its not all the time. if all music was cathartic then it wouldn't mean shit.
