I don't really know how labels make these decisions but maybe they don't wanna release it too close to Tangerine Reef? Like when movie studios don't want 2 movies to be competing against each other? It doesn't really make sense though because I don't really think album sales work like movie ticket sales.
Maybe they wanna do a big ass rollout with videos, website, etc like they did for Grim Reaper and it takes more time to put that together, but even then I'd think a late 2018 release would be possible

Makes sense from an over-saturation standpoint. Band (and in this case, label) wants a couple months in between releases. I'm on board so we have time to enjoy each phase. Rather than releasing everything at once and disappearing, they have a cornucopia of releases lined up that have been trickling out over time.

Actually the release is not that different from PBMTGR, back in 2014 I talked with Danny Perez around July and he told me that the album would come in January of the next year (and it came), the difference was that he released the MrNoah ep before that and the album ended up freebirding early

over-saturation? gtfo domino. what about all of Avey's songs from 2017?? those are some of the best songs he's ever had! if the over-saturation argument holds, then we won't hear that and the new AC jams from earlier this year til 2020 at the earliest

Six months is a long time to have an album sitting around without freebirding....
I'd feel so bad for Panda, and be pretty mad at Domino. If their pizzas took this long.... :/

This reads like that part in an action movie where the bad guy is threatening the good guy. “Very nice family, it’s be terrible if something happened to them.”

Domino wanting to wait just means they want to promote it. They must like the album. Right now the focus is on the new Animal Collective so releasing Panda at the beginning of the year will give the record more of a chance to make a impact.

Remember in 2007 when Person Pitch, Pullhair Rubeye, and Strawberry Jam came out in the same year and none of them detracted from the others? Delaying this because of Tangerine Reef is pretty weak imo

this is the silver lining. probably means they'll give it the attention pbvsgr had which had a bunch of cool stuff going on around it and big notoriety. also hopefully means we'll get a panda tour again early next year.

Doesn’t matter, my point was that there’s no such thing as AC overload when releases aren’t spaced out

And honestly, both Tomboy and Greaper suffered (to my ears) from the excessively extended rollout. I was pretty much done with half of each by the time they arrived. Yeah yeah, my own fault, I know. Record labels seem like such an outdated concept to me now, though. Maybe it's worth it from a marketing and sales POV, I can only imagine that's the case.

Yeah, it's a shame, I was looking forward to the Sept release. Plus, Tangerine Reef is so different and doesn't even have Panda on it so why hold it up?
I get the marketing/sales aspect I guess, but if you're a label in the internet era, you best be husslin' or you may suffer leakage by Deakage.

I just think Domino's methodology hasn't caught up to the times. I mean, what better way to counteract freebirds than to just put the shit out with little or no warning. Maybe I'm naive to think that could work for smaller artists the way it definitely does for bigger ones, but with a band like Animal Collective who are capable of multiple releases per year, it seems a shame not to try different strategies.
But again, it ain't my livelihood on the line.

i mean, remember how pbvsgr artwork was featured heavily in apple promotions at the time? i believe it was the artwork on itunes or ios when they rolled out a new itunes or something. that is some wild, valuable placement that domino got. i'm sure it seriously helps keep panda going to get those levels of promotion around an album release and it would probably be silly to throw that away.

Yeah, despite my post above, if Domino help these guys make a better living and hopefully continue to make music for as long as they want to, I'm all for whatever they do.

Even though I think a sad majority of modern hip hop is vapid and dull, I LOVE that a lot of those artists do surprise releases and relatively quick rollouts. I may not care about their music, but thats awesome for fans to have such prolific output. And yeah, I get it, the logistics of a major label in AC's case don't necessarily nurture the possibility for an abundant amount of releases....but goddamn.
But fuck it. I'm probably just annoyed that some nauseating artists can put out a ridiculous amount of releases every goddamn year and I've gotta wait a minimum of 4 years for Panda. Poor me, blah blah blah gimme gimme....

Homies January 2018
Bouys January 2019
So on balance we'll get a 1 hour Panda album in July. Harsh but fair

True, but with the fan boots from the tour, it's leaving us all hungry for the official release, especially since it sounds like the recording process complete. Ah well, I can live off of all the stuff we got in 2018 for awhile, especially with what's on the horizon for 2019 with all the quality material unreleased thus far. I can't wait for an official Sabbath.

I think this is my most anticipated release ever. Since I saw him in april (best show I ever been to maybe) I have been thinking a lot about those songs and how they made me feel. Never had an experience like that.
Also I did not listen to the boots, I don't want to spoil my souvenir and my experience of the record. I think it will be really special one.

I've only listened to the 9:30 boot - were there other new tracks played on this tour that I'm missing out on? And if so, would anyone be able to direct me towards them please?

Between the 9:30 Boot and Brooklyn Steel and Mohawk (Austin) boots that should have all 9 new tracks. Here are the new track names:
Dolphin
Home Free
Buoys
Crescendo
I Know I Don't
Cranked
Sabbath
Woken
Calling In Sick (on Mohawk Boot around 42 mins in)
