I actually agree. If this wasn't an animal collective song I probably would have only listened to it once and forgotten about it. I keep giving it more tries but I'm really not feeling it.
I'm hoping the rest of the album will tickle my fancy a lot more!

for sure! I mean don't really understand why people would dig this as much as stuff from earlier albums, but I also know that "I don't really understand" are the key words in that sentence ya know? I'm not going to pretend to know why someone likes or doesn't like a thing, that's just silly. Live and let live.

I'm not trolling at all, do you really think I can't like something and simultaneously have criticisms? I remember saying multiple times that I liked and enjoyed the track, however I don't think it's very good.

there is absolutely nothing wrong with not digging this song as much as their old material. furthermore, there is absolutely nothing wrong with voicing why you (relatively) dislike it. but there is so, so much wrong with claiming that everyone who really enjoys this song is deceiving him/herself out of blind fandom. it's the difference between saying "ah, i don't think this stands up to their best material" and saying "you are deluding yourself if you think this song is really good." the former is perfectly respectful disagreement. the latter is presumptuous, rude, and almost definitely not true.
have you read these forums much? people voice dislike of animal collective material all the time. the easiest example is centipede hz, which plenty of people on this board thought was a bit of a disappointment.
I completely disagree with you, the appreciation of art can be just as objective as it can be subjective. You actually think I would go to the trouble of creating some subjective reason to not like it? The only reasons I like it are subjective (ex: it's fun). Looking at it objectively, as I would their masterpieces (HCTI, Sung Tongs, Feels, Strawberry Jam, and MPP) which fascinate me from a compositional perspective, Floridada is very boring, there's no mystery to how they wrote it. I don't only enjoy listening to Animal Collective, they touch my soul and open new doorways of creative expression, but the latter hasn't happened with any studio album since Tomboy. When I saw them on their first tour playing CHz material, I thought it was going to be their best album yet, and I remember crying when Honeycomb came out because I was so disappointed. I've read these forums plenty, I actually transcribed most of the chords for CHz with a friend of mine under a different screen name, and I don't remember saying "you are deluding yourself if you think this song is really good". If anyone is being rude, it's you.

thanks dude, I'm just trying to help you guys out who blindly adhere to the belief that AnCo can do no wrong. It's no so much "self-important" as it is experienced because I used to be obsessed with figuring out their musical secrets, which is what led me to the forums years ago. I know how to play nearly all of their songs and they've all been incredibly influential to my songwriting, but since the Centipedia came out, their newest material appears to me as a predictable combination of their many influences, whereas most of their discography pre-CHz still blows my mind.

What is wrong with being objective? do you really think it's impossible to judge music objectively? Animal Collective are not my favorite band of all time for subjective reasons. Looking at them objectively, they've made more musical innovations than any single band since The Beatles. Objectivity is not about removing emotion from judgement, it's about judging one's ability to express emotion. Subjectivity to me means basing your judgement off of your own emotional reaction to the music, rather than appreciating music as a language. I understand it might be very different for some of you, but I've gone to every length imaginable to ensure my objective opinion is free of bias or any personal attachments I have to the music so that I'm able to look at it more clearly in the light of historical context, solely judging its intrinsic value.
I only brought up having met Mark Richardson to express his credibility as a critic.

If you are someone that likes Floridada a lot, then you shouldn't care what TapirMache's opinion or observation concerning the song is. This person's statements will change literally nothing concerning the reception of Animal Collective's music or anything else for that matter, and it certainly doesn't validate or invalidate your own opinion.
Nobody should be responding to or arguing with someone who "looks at an album objectively" and then follows it up with their emotional attachments to said work anyway. Tapir isn't even using the words objective and subjective correctly. So....yeah.
Who gives a shit? Centipede Hz, my favorite album by AnCo currently, is attacked all the time for reasons that I think are 'unfair' but I'm not going to argue with people who tell me different about what I should enjoy. The only objective observation about a song is if some particular person likes it or not.

There's an old joke that goes, "Why are your poo poos tapered?" Tapered meaning, within the context of poop, that your poos max width, from the center, branching out in both directions, slowly diminishes in size as it exits your rectum. The answer to the question "why are poo poos tapered?" is comically "So your asshole doesn't slam shut".

but I think "FloriDada" might be the best single of theirs since "Grass"

It's funny you say this because some of the composition of Floridada reminds me of Grass. A LOT. Especially the bouncy percussion on the track.

These lines are taken from within the same post that you made. Calling something boring is not an objective opinion. It is based on you, as a subject, who experiences boredom when listening to the song. An objective opinion would be saying Floridada is fast paced (in reference to Animal Collective's discography, Floridada is one of their fastest songs) and a subjective opinion is saying Floridada is boring and there is no mystery to it. To me there is plenty of mystery in trying to figure out how they wrote it, so subjectively, I find it to be interesting.
TapirMache wrote:

I never said it's impossible to judge music objectively. It's totally possible. Here's another example:
The chorus to Floridada is easier to decipher than the rest of the lyrics
The problem people are having with you, TapirMache, is your non-dictionary definition and use of 'objectivity'. It's either you misunderstand the correct definition or you understand it, but choose to alter it to your own version, which people are not going to take lightly (as you have seen). If you don't recognize this and don't care to reevaluate your definition of objective and subjective then there really isn't much more to say

Personally, I don't like floridada. I've been obsessed with AC for 4 years and it's by far my least favorite song of theirs. Why? Not sure but I think it's because fractals. I saw a dark horse the first time I heard peacebone. It's a single but again, 2 simultaneous conjunctions of Sap when I sat down and first played moonjock. Avey concurred egoic battles; nothing left to life but symmetry enjoyment. Panda dad and settled with simplicity. Brian..... Lost soul and confusion eyes. It's from this hole (his naval hole) arise sounds summoning unnecessary turmoil (darkerhorse on B sides) and spins. Took me 3 long nights to recover after listening to Floridada first time. 3 months ago this was foreshadowed when I was in a silent sweat lodge and encountered incessant mosquito over lords. 3 long nights repeating "flor flor flor flor" finally I embraced inevitable destruction and assumed my Breathe was done for. Maybe I was in a vulnerable state or maybe the song just sucks but whirling energies, undercooked chicken, and flax for the uploads leave me to doubt. Hopefully pitchfork will BNT stamp on the stair man (pandas dad center) and I can alter my opinion with grace. Cheers.

It's fun to critically/contextually unpack the song and 'how it fits' in the band's oeuvre, but FloriDada's been hitting that rare spot of ecstatic jubilance within me since they dropped it--the same fun button inside my soul that Chores/Did You See The Words/Graze/Also Frightened (among many others) pushed when I first heard them. I love the dry production. Those sounds that come in during the second verse are wicked, they sound like wind up toys/ spinning wheels or something.
