Stanshant...I believe I've said it before, but it bears repeating: I think that we have almost the EXACT same feelings toward this band. Practically everything you say I feel could've easily been my own words. Maybe if I was a more active poster on this board they would be, but over the past 6ish years, I've been happy to see someone one here repping my opinion.

So obviously I second everything that Stanshant said. CHz is, as hard as I tried to convince myself otherwise, the first moment that the band hasn't bottled some sort of magical lightning in my opinion. Definitely not a bad album, at all. Just not up to par with most of their discography. Most of this has to do with songwriting first, and production second. Honestly, a lot of my cringes come from Avey's very generic-sounding keyboard riffs. Sounds like stuff I would do given some chords and asked to noodle around. Is this a disappointment? Yes, of course it is. But I, for one, feel that I have been completely spoiled by this band over the 10ish years I have been listening to them, and am amazed it has taken them this long to come up with something that doesn't completely 100% blow me away. Have I lost faith in them? Not one bit. Exhibit A: The new Panda Bear material is coming close to giving me the same feels I got seeing/watching the embryonic MPP material in 2007. Good things lie in the future.

AC. Helluva a band. Good on them for always doing what they want, even if it doesn't always blow my mind.

I agree with everything you said. I'm certainly not saying it's better than any of their previous efforts, but I still enjoy it "for what it is". Judging by Panda's new live set and Slasher Flicks, I think the boys are back on track and writing incredible music again. For whatever reason, Centipede Hz lacked that feeling that the rest of their discography has. Maybe it was the pressure of writing a follow up to MPP, maybe it was personal problems, maybe it was learning to write as a four piece again...who knows! I still enjoy listening even though I feel like it's their weakest LP since Danse Manatee.

None of their albums really feel the same to me.
That's why I don't care that CHz feels different.
All that matters to me is that I think the album is full of killer songs.
I can always jam to Moonjock especially!
Also I really like the ridiculous amount of sound throughout the album.

I'm with Iko. I said it before but someday y'all will look back on this thread and feel the shame of a thousand bill clintons when you realize how great this album is.

I was at the show last night. Weird to think this is it for AC for a long time. Check out my review in live discussion.

End of an era....

RIP 2011-2013

I see your point but I disagree. Once I learned to let go and stop internally critiquing the mix, the sounds, etc. and just enjoy CHz for what it is, I loved it! This is what they gave us. It's not up to us to make those decisions. CHz is their piece of art and this is the way they intended us to hear it. Relax and get lost in human pleasure!

Yes yes, obviously we should always feel this way towards the art our favorite peeps make. However I still agree with your first intuitive opinion 100%. I forgot to give you some back up around that time you posted, so I apologize. Nevertheless, no matter what we'll enjoi their work and their need to create it, but that doesnt mean we should hold back on other views and feelings.
We must remembaz that several opinions and views can coincide with each otha, without negating ze other or directly affecting it!

tl;dr: If you don't recall what I'm talking about this post will make no sense btw.

Just listened to the Pitchfork 2011 boot for the first time since CHz was released. Wow. So weird to hear these songs in their infancy.

CHz is a fairly weak (for them) collection of songs produced in a way that smothers them in ephemera.

I agree. The middle stretch of songs (Wide Eyed, Father Time and Monkey Riches) contain some of the most bland, forgettable melodies the band has put to tape. CHZ explored all of the band's (and especially Avey's) worst tendencies imo.

Hopeful the next release will really focus on melody and clarity over texture

Colin, I'm going to find out where you live and cut your and your friends' and family members' throats out, like right out, all the way through, so I end up with loads of rings of throats and I'll wear them on my arms similar to IRON FIST STYLE HUNG GAR KUNG FU.

Imagine this but with throats :(
