anyway thanks to all who recorded and shared!
Interesting you say that—I’ve had that same feeling about a lot of these new tunes. I hear a lot of
Sung Tongs-esque harmonies in “Defeat,” “Soul Capturer,” etc. Maybe it’s the return of guitars and Noah’s kit, but I think you’re right—there’s also something in these songs that harkens to the embryonic years of the band. Something primal. Maybe something subconscious. I love
Centipede Hz and
Painting With, but they definitely sound zeitgeist-y, like a band consciously striving to push the envelope to meet the times, or to deconstruct the sonics and songwriting that shot them to stardom. There’s something refreshingly dispassionate—something cool—about these newies. Maybe that’s the “dad rock” vibe some people are hearing.
Hell yeah Ingenue I kinda get what yr saying. I feel like they sound like they're doing more what is viscerally fun to them or something.. some of the playing makes me think they're approaching things as "musicians" than other times.. sportsmen like...
I think they also loved the PW songs and I sure as hell loved those live shows too, but it felt almost like an experimental take on a MPP type electronic/dj-ish set up. Fun to see them back in this feels/chz rock band style set up again

Yeah it seems like Noah wanted to get behind a classic kit so I feel like that influenced their approach a lot to more traditional forms of soundfinding. It might have happened before that though, I mean Deakin has been practicing piano for a while so him progressing to keys also seems like a natural thing.
I have to think it's some sort of conscious decision and a lot of fans have been wondering what an AC album like that would sound like, including myself. So I'm pumped.

Hell yeah Deak has been shredding on keys, didn't know he could play so damn well.. esp during Dragon Slayer and I think Royal he's doing a lot. I feel like I'm hearing more notes than usual in these songs which is sick. Got that jazzy/proggy feel goin on and I love it

right, there are a lot more notes lol. it's actually very weird to me to hear them playing music like this. "sportsmanlike" is a good word for it. I'm into it, although i agree completely with what stan said. there's a sense to me in which it dramatically demystifies what they're doing.
I feel like the decision to take out the autotune in a bunch of spots and "soften up" the sounds since the 2019 shows also makes the songs in general less intense and weird. there's a crisp strangeness that's missing to me now from songs like cherokee, strangers and passerby. we'll see.
What do you guys think non-AC heads think about the new material? I don't have any kind of a gauge on the reaction of general listeners after the pitchfork festival

I watched the pitchfork stream with my girlfriend, who is only familiar with their more straight forward material (e.g. MPP, feels, sung tongs). She thought soul capturer sounded like a boring, blurry mess with disorienting vocals. Geo vibing on his hurdy gurdy to this mess was good for a chuckle though.
She liked prester john and royal a lot. She said the 'it's what I hoped for - whoa' part in no more runnin is the quintessence of AC to her. Dragon slayer was also considered to be nice and groovy.

totally see where your gf is coming from on soul capturer lol, i really like the song in theory and can hear what the band is going for and how great it could eventually sound, but yeah that p4k version was a mess in terms of performance and mix

The application
JDownloader 2 finds the original source files put on the site and lets you download them. The best way to do it for the majority of sites. All the soundcloud mp3s from that page show up fine for downloading.

Can anyone help direct me to the best Royal recording out there from the recent tour? Trying to figure out the lyrics for a cover and of course that's the song the pitchfork stream cut out on haha!

the nature of these songs and the mixing of the rock band setup is really not suited for bootleg recording at all. The wobbly nature of these tracks sound so spineless in these recordings but it’s exactly what makes them feel like magic in a live setting (and hopefully the studio setting as well). There’s a very subtle melodic wiggliness in these songs that just sound like bad singing in these boots

I'll take this a step further let's try to come up with the best version of each song floating around for this and 2019 and make the greatest hits

I'm gonna slide the audio to 'the feeling store' and we're gonna work on mastering those together. I'm JUST today getting home from being on the road for 3 weeks so I'm playing catch-up with everything now.
Getting audio unloaded from cards and sorted tonight (before I even start 3 weeks of laundry so you know where my priorities are at!). Remember, I didn't get my 2019 Henry Miller recording out until 2 months after the gig. These won't take nearly as long but your collective patience is appreciated and will be generously rewarded!
The experiences surrounding those three shows were pure magic. I met some absolutely amazing people and danced my ass off. I kicked off exciting new friendships and deepened existing ones. This community rules and my heart is so full right now.
Cheers!

I mean, it is. I love it, but my wife was nonplussed on it for the same reasons. But then again, she teases me regularly for liking this band to begin with. I'm PRETTY SURE this band knows how to use samplers, so maybe Noah didn't need to play kick drum AND guitar. It was just messy. We know the score, this is gonna slap on whatever record it ends up on. I predict the unassuming 3rd album from this era.
Edit to say we saw them play it in the encore for Cincinnati, since the quote was about Chicago. I just don't think it's at it's apex yet. If you're following the boots throughout their career, it's par for the course. On another note, Lexington was the best show I've seen from them. But, I've only been able to catch them CHz on.

I agree with you, taptherockies. Soul Capturer might turn out to be a great song in the end. But in the recent shows, it stuck out a lot in comparison to the other new songs. I'm just glad it didn't end up on time skiffs, as it needs more time to be developed IMHO.

I really think it will shine with a studio treatment more than the other songs. Thinking a wall of sound type of thing, like Feels. I agree it's kinda boring, but the melody gets randomly stuck in my head so that's a good sign.

me too, it's stuck in my head constantly. it's probably the least sonically interesting new songs to me, but the melody has been looping in my head for days

I love how freaking unhinged Dave is at the end of “Car Keys” here. His vocals. Might be my favorite moment in the whole enchilada that is this medieval forest lore smorgasbord. Kazoo Man to Yodel King to Padded Cell Boy. Peerless.

Just in case y'all didn't see it in the "All Known Live Recordings" thread, HWG shared the recording he got at the Asheville show, which I mastered. I set out to accurately represent the experience of being at one of these shows and think our combined efforts hit the mark. Hope you all enjoy!

Speaking of, who wrote Prestor John? It feels like an Avey track based on the Music Box performance, but in the recent shows its almost like a Deakin/Panda-lead song. Very awesome track nonetheless
Re: september shows

seems still to have at least started with Avey. But the "The Path" part went away after Music Box and the melodies in the beginning seem totally new, so maybe that part is pure Deak? Or....? Who really knows honestly. But I think it's safe to say it started with Avey. It's Like Guys Eyes but in reverse, but Deakin/Avey instead of Panda/Avey (I think... shit for all we know Panda or GEO wrote the new melodies/lyrics!)

i think the new part is all panda. he sings the main melody and the lyrics are much more in line with his more abstract lyrics than Deakin's more personal stuff

It always struck me as a Panda song but I haven't heard the early Music Box version.
