Sure it's an expensive way to get one new old song, but hey. Stoked.

Also my vinyl copy of MPP doesn't sound that great so hopefully this pressing is better

from a beach! plz put it on streaming.

Kinda wish the 10” had something like Taste from the BBC session. Not sure why we need My Girls on a 10”…

That is a little befuddling. Taste would've been primo. Ah well

triple posting sorry goodbye

I don't know the answer but I imagine if it did exist then they would have released that version instead. Unless they think the BBC one is superior

I like the idea of From a Beach as the B-side to My Girls. Could have been real at the time though smh... And the BBC version is pretty amazing and better to me than that loosie Soundcloud version, but yeah why can't they just drop the version they presumably worked on at like Sweet Tea studio or whatever during MPP sessions.

Was it just not finished? Is it finished but they hated it compared to live? Are there weird rules about what can be released officially from specific studio sessions, etc.

Kinda wish they spoiled us even more. But I assume other things were basically owed will come out later this year... like full Music Box officially.

But yeah when are they gonna bust out a big ass online archive we can give them like $5/mo for ever for... wasn't that actually floated by them once?

Like a place to go for their soundboards and weird shit like whatever recording THEY have of say, that Glasslands set etc.

Like it could literally just be on patreon, though ideally something maybe just for the band

I've always enjoyed from a beach (and am glad its finally getting released), but even in the BBC version the lyrics, and maybe some parts of the song, feel a little bit "work in progress".

the BBC session was November 2007 and they recorded most of MPP in February 2008. So who knows, maybe it just wasn't nailed down and eventually abandoned in studio in favor of stronger songs (including the Fall Be Kind songs)

From a Beach physical and maybe streaming is cool and I don’t own MPP on vinyl yet so this is a viable way for me to do so but as an announcement this is kind of a non thing and about as close as you can get to an AC Funko Pop other than the pillow case they sold on the PW tour (which I own)

Personally, I would love for the band to release a remastered version of a full live show, Music Box and beyond. Did Live at 9:30 not sell well or something? I'm not even half the hater of Ballet Slippers as some people on here, but a full ass show would be stellar. That would be grand.A whole Dave's Picks series even.

Yeah theyre sitting on a goldmine... They probably know that that's the end-phase of the late-middle part of their career and they wanna nail it really well when they finally unleash something like an archival service. It might be really glorious. They gotta include the Transverse Temporal Gyrus stems and the randomizer algo to chill w/ + footage of the guggenheim installation aliatorically.

Premium membership gets ODDSAC w/ the demo soundtrack they filmed around.

yknow what? BBC version is perfect. It even has that weird mercurial MPP quality in spades where its both super poppy to almost Disney proportions while managing a heftieness of like pure noise and kinda noisier drone in the backdrop.

How would a studio take even differ? Vocals' recording quality and mix a bit diff? Synths pop a bit diff in mix? Eh, nah this is a great radio cut right her (aka im gonna buy this thing)

They shoulda thrown FBK on a like 10'' somehow for the hell of it, or just included it as is? idk, make it a 3XLP with an etching side? eh

I'm re-listening to From a Beach right now. The song never sold itself to me in the way other MPP-era songs have, which has me thinking AC made the right choice by leaving it off a proper release or that my ambivalence toward the song is compensation for its never getting released (I can't deal with the heartache!).

It's an oddly anachronistic song by AC standards. We hear synth textures that sound like the in-between era of Feels and Strawberry Jam, yet it's distinctly electronic in the way MPP is. The song structure is itself still in the Feels / Strawberry Jam mode, however. That digital FM synthesis sound that's so often associated with Down There also comes through. Imagining how they would have produced this song in the vein of MPP or FBK is beyond me.

That would be dope. A top tier member can actually have Animal Collective come to their house, stand around in costumes, and do nothing while TTG plays.

Of course I love everyone who works hard on the boots but there are years that have next to no good recordings, like 2011 shows.

Y'know what , I wrote that thing about how it IS like all mpp songs in an intrinsic way but.. it does seem to stand out beyond the fact that we just won't ever know what it would have sounded like in studio.

The fact that it ends up in techno form does make it seem Feels-y cuz they did that with Lock Raven and Bees ...it reminds me of a pavement b side where it's like o yeah that track owns but does NOT really fit in with the era fully

I do still think it would have been a sick fbk track, but at that point fbk would have truly been a full LP and we wouldn't want that. I heavily associate it with Grace and to a lesser extent Wwiws and bleeding cuz I discovered those like spring 09 post MPP CD drop and I was like holy shit there's MORE

Banshee Beat and Kids on Holiday are actually from the second BBC session they did in 2004. By far my favorite version of Banshee Beat. It sounds like there's a lot of wah on everything, that wah feedback that drives the song puts me in a weird trance

very exciting!
---
"From a Beach" would've fit best on Water Curses
---

i came here to say "What Would I Want? Sky" is the best Animal Collective song, and contextually maybe the greatest because of its catchy beat, first ever Grateful Dead sample, being the exclamation point song on their best commercial year, and in general being a structurally stunning sonic beast, but on second thought that's not true... though i did find myself stumbling into a dreaded but curious "What If"

........... What If Fall Be Kind was released 2ish months later, was marketed as an LP, and like MPP was the first "big" indie release of the new year... Not only that, the new DECADE.

How would AC's trajectory have changed if this was "the follow-up" to MPP?

Obviously, this is not how the band operates. This is a "companion" EP of the songs left from that era, but I wonder if any part of Domino wanted to push this as an album coming off the success of MPP with another statement... if "WWIWS" was pushed as the lead single to the next AC album I think it would've gotten even more exposure... IMO it could've been 10x bigger, more well known, as well known among the masses as "My Girls"... i'm not a spotify user so i have no streaming numbers comparisons to know how less popular of a song it is from "My Girls," but i have to believe if this was the way 2010 started, with AC releasing their new album with that banging lead single this band would've blown up even more.

not that they wanted that, nor anyone! i still believe and feel that their artistic trajectory is perfect and pure, that it is as artistically admirable as one could have it, but for the sake of the visibility of WWIWS i suddenly imagined this alternate timeline wherein i think the song (and band) would've blown up even more.
