the tracklist is veritable tarot deck. Kings, Magicians, Soul, Genies, Zodiac. Dragon Slayer didn't make the cut.... but maybe the new track is Knight of Cups or sumn

I mean to be fair Kings is pretty long for what it is. But considering it’s probably the most left-field cut from these tracks it’s gonna stick out like a sore thumb no matter where it’s placed. I think it’s a brilliant tone setter and would segue into Magicians very nicely. I think it’ll be easier to get the most out of this new one by considering it as a journey with peaks and valleys rather than on a track by track basis. Imagine how hard the last half of Magicians would hit with 10 minutes of mysterious build up. Sustain the high with the poppy belters and go into the black hole with Stride and Defeat afterwards. All just speculation obviously. I think the track list will cause quite a stir when it’s eventually revealed.

I don’t have confidence in this but I’d love it:
1. Genie’s Open
2. Soul Capturer
3. Gem and I
4. Stride Rite
5. New song
6. Broke Zodiac
7. Defeat
8. King’s Walk
9. Magicians from Baltimore
William’s comments about the new song being cool/short/poppy but nothing life changing or whatever make me think it’s not the opener

I think Kings should come after like, back-to-back panda bangers (Gem/Zodiac) or sumn, before a slower, darker stretch that includes/leads to Defeat closer. That's how a marketing person would do it. Like fuck what are we gonna do with this ambient choral vocal drone track amidst all these post-classic rock prog- odysseys?! Stick it after the 2 Police homages

Someone said it a few pages back I think, but I do feel like it's more likely Defeat is the closer if Isn't It Now is the title. I just didn't think they would end on it originally
Also I'm thinking of cornpilling my Defeat vinyl at this point, like announcement is likely next week and already has the song on it, what's the point? Since it's relatively soon

I don’t know. It’d be an incredible move to put Defeat last, both as a statement and as a trend-breaker for the band, but I don’t have confidence in that being the case. Both Avey and Panda put out records in the last year with the purpose of more optimism in the world. And even far back as SJ, they chose not to end the record on the note of Safer.

Sane people such as myself have been saying it will be the closer since 2018. It obviously will. Quote this and delete my account if it isn't

I really see Genie's as the best closer dynamically so kinda hoping for options 1 or 2. I don't love either idea but I can see Defeat opening or closing too (opening would be fucking WILD).
Just throwing mine back in the mix...

Well, 7s does end on its darkest song, so I don't think they are as opposed to such closers as they maybe have been. And IIRC, geo wanted safer as a closer to SJ all along and everybody knows that's the way it should be. Geo knows what's up.

I'll never understand the Safer-tracklist debate. Is it a brilliant song? Of course. But it isn't very strawberry now, is it?

The strawberriesest of them all is cobwebs and that's also not on the album

Exactly. SJ is so concise, safer on the end throws it completely off-kilter

Can confirm. This was said when they used to post on CA forums. I hear Cobwebs so differently now because of this info. Always has been a favorite though.

Yeah, I quite honestly think that SJ is the only album where every song works. They all have this pulsating constant rythm to them. Safer is a bit more sparse, closest on the album is Cockoo, but that one works where it's placed.

Woah, thanks for completely twisting my view on SJ upside down. That is so weird, as WC is pretty much a perfect EP and I can't imagine it any other way. Derek as the third track would be incredibly weird there, but maybe that's because I'm so used to listening to it this way. That's also why I can't see safer at any other place than at the end of SJ, as that's what I've been listening to for over a decade now.

It's kinda awesome though if you go back and listen to Cuckoo Cuckoo with Cobwebs right after, it flows so nicely. I forget why they changed it, I think they said Cobwebs just didn't have as much impact as they had hoped when they recorded it.

Only reason Cobwebs can't be the closer to me is because I can't listen to it without Seal Eyeing immediately after

Getting waaaaaay off topic here but it's always been confusing to me that Derek - as a song AND as a closer - doesn't sit well with some people. It's perfect to me. Probably my joint favourite closer alongside Alvin and maybe Brothersport.
I'd also say that WC is their most perfect and consistent release so taking Cobwebs away from it would be like taking a wheel off a car.

Derek only really clicked with me with the last few years when I realized it's kind of the midpoint between Person Pitch and Tomboy with the guitar. Cracked it open when focusing on that rhythm.
To get this back on track I think Soul is a great closer but I hate when closing tracks are singles so I hope that's not the case. Gem and I for opener.

i think as a forum we've definitely eclipsed 100+ tracklist predictions which is just insane, definitely the most for any rollout
suffice to say, i think we're all gonna have a LOT to say when the actual tracklist drops

Hard agree
But I would be shocked if that is the single
Broke Zodiac is by far the catchiest and most single-like song on the album (I have no clue what the single will be, just a guess)
Glad the album title is finally out there

I thought you knew track order? Or are you subtly telling us Soul is the opener?!

Yep, I think we got the Willie confirmation on Soul as track one, and honestly I'm p happy with that. Interesting that you say Broke Zodiac is "by far" the catchiest tune tho, I would have thought it would be neck and neck with Gem... v curious how both of these songs will sound

Actually not mad about this tbh. Always thought Soul Cap was destined to be the closer but I can see it kicking things off working a lot better than some other tracks
