I mean, no offense to Josh, but “it was a non event” has less weight coming from the mouth of the perpetrator. I’d need to hear from Avey before I could truly let it go.

I've had that fucking interview's jingle stuck in my head ever since I watched it a decade ago and I hate it. It's not even particularly good it just plays like 3 times in the video Ahahaha.

Remembering how much I loved this album when it came out in 2012…not sure why it’d fallen out of favour with me for the past 6-7 years but I’m officially back on board …

Josh clearly is tired of being the subject of 99% of the stupid memes about the band, people need to give it a rest.

Long, winding, caffeine-adled aside:
What do you think of the desire to remix and remaster and recontextualize that is so en vogue these days? I understand the impulse. Financially, it is probably, for the artist, a no-brainer. But I can’t shake the impression that ultimately it cheapens the art.
Rhino, for example, is systematically reimagining the discography of one of my favorite bands, The Replacements. Some of the records, like Pleased to Meet Me, were simply remastered and a few mediocre B-sides were tacked-on, as is the custom. Tim, in addition to B-sides and a sonically mediocre live recording, was expanded with an entirely new mix. Yes, the original 1985 mix is famously “bad,” which only means fans disapprove of Tommy Ramone’s aesthetics. Too much “bad” 80s digital reverb, they say. The drums are too tinny, they say. So, the remix, of course, is sonically pure, rich, full, clear. Now, they say, you can finally hear what Paul is singing! And you can. Now, they say, the drums are huge! And they are. But guess what? In so doing, it isn’t Tim anymore. Not the Tim that slayed me and shook me to the core. The desolation of the record is gone. The weird mono-ish wall-of-sound tsunami that kinda hurt my ears but hit me straight in the heart is gone. The remix even features guitar licks that were recorded back in ‘85 but are, intentionally, inaudible in the original mix. So, in some cases, these are also different compositions. This is the case too with Don’t Tell a Soul, also maligned because of its original mix. They remixed it (the engineer even recorded new parts in some instances where the master tapes were missing, for example, percussion), resequenced the tracklist and even gave the record a new title, Dead Man’s Pop.
Of course, the revisionist urge is ascendant in all of the arts right now, as it is in politics, history, etc. There is certainly a larger philosophical aspect to all of this re: memory and time, but just in terms of this movement’s effect on the art object—I think it sucks. Your favorite records are talismans, right? They are magical objects. They are a product of a time, a place, a mindset. That is what gives them their conjuring powers. If we’re going to give Rubber Soul a stereo mix—if we’re going to change history—then let’s redo all of 1965 while we’re at it. Let’s have AI rewrite Dune, Fox In Socks, The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch. Let’s un-drop Agent Orange over Vietnam. Let’s un-kill Malcolm X. Let’s undo Johnson’s inauguration.
Milan Kundera: “The ethic of the essential has given way to the ethic of the archive.” I don’t want Feels remixed by Giles Martin and retitled Pacifier. I don’t want Centipede Hz deconstructed and “Father Time” replaced by “Gotham.” What’s done is done. Let it be. There are innumerable cliches to describe what’s going on, to describe our culture’s manic inability to detach.
Isn’t it now?

I enjoy listening to a remix/etc but I agree... part of the fun is hearing the context in which the music came about. Now, the remixed versions are the defacto ones on streaming services because old songs now "fit in" sonically with new songs on playlists. Look at the 50th anniversary remix of All Things Must Pass compared to the original one for an example. It's been a while since I listened to it, but the kick drum is more prominent, vocals a lot more upfront. Personally I love the sound of the original mix (and any master minus the 2001 cd release, which sounds like balls from I remember). It's nice and soupy, huge and epic and is a great compliment to the lyrics and mood of the record. Although looking at Spotify, the 2014 rerelease/remaster is the first one that pops up, which is cool
I know the majority of people don't give a shit about that and like or aren't consciously aware of the changes to the new ones, but it sucks for that stuff to be slipping away over time. I don't want a bluray of an old movie that has been digitally altered to take the grain out of the picture, or replacing those old glass breaking sound effects that have absolutely no high end to them lol with high def cool sounding noises. Just gimmie what it looked liked and sounded like back in the day, displayed at the highest quality (sourced from a good print, etc)

i feel like the bonefish pod
(of which I am not a part of but guys if you're here and you want a certified panda bear meets the grim reaper freak to guest my schedule is open) doesn't get enough plugs around these parts and while the fellas are divided on CHZ I really, really enjoyed the episode and gave a relisten an added depth just after hearing those guys dish about it.
highlight take: CHZ is animal collective's nu metal album lmao.
anyway all i want to add is chz is like, fucking incredible, and I'll freely admit my first time seeing them live was at p4k 2011 and obviously chz was my first new release as a fan but like, goddamn, good piece of music. i feel like a lot of the stuff a lot of fans want out of anco they deliver in spades on that record.

Anyone else simultaneously excited and perturbed by MPP on Apple Music? Looks like they added the live in LA Summertime Clothes that was a bonus track in Japan... but they also "replaced" the songs, which now have gaps in-between them, and the record is no longer amongst their 'top tracks'. The latter isn't so important but it was helpful for me when I was on the go and felt like listening to MPP without pushing too many buttons.

I know what you mean, annoyed the heck out of me too. What I found is that there's exactly 2 seconds of silence added on to each track. In the Music desktop app (or iTunes if you use Windows), if you Get Info for each song, you can go to the Options tab and reduce the Stop time by 2 seconds, and that'll fix it on your Apple Music mobile device
...for whatever reason, though, it doesn't remove the gap on playback in the desktop app, though

Just watched Mulberry Street. Great little film and Loch Raven over the credits was a nice surprise. Then I see Josh Dibb's name in the credits as 'additional creature voices'. Terrestrial Tones also on the soundtrack and Danny Perez art director. P cool

Mark Richardson on the Bonefish podcast about Young Prayer.
Probably the most succinct explanation of why I love Animal Collective:
"AC's [creative process is] very instinctive feeling, responding to the moment, being in the moment. In the ways its manifested, these kind of vocal arrangements -- they speed up, they slow down, they're yelping or maybe barking -- you sometimes imagine kids who are playing -- they're running around in the woods making sounds, and their music sometimes sounds like that. I think of that kind of approach to music is very spiritual because it's very much about honouring the moment and spontaneity and feels very much like a celebration of life. It's very physical. The way they make music with their hands in terms of how they strum the guitar and how they use their voices is like feeling the pleasure in making sounds. It's like, "Oh I made a different sound there that's going to be in my music." It's pretty spiritual in and of itself."

This is a really good quote. Mark has been writing about AC for a long time, always nice to har him go on about the band. Reminds me of my pitch for Painting With to a friend which was something like "imagine if you took all of those fun sounds you make when you're aimlessly playing around with a synth and actually make a record out of them."
