SC is the song I'm least psyched about, so I'm glad that it will be a single. Any other song would be at high risk to overplay it until the album drops for me. I'm still pretty psyched to hear it, but I think it will be easiest song to listen to a handful of times and then put it down until the end of September.

Soul Capturer doesn't really sound like Animal Collective (to me). Lyrics and melody are pure grandad psych. I don't mind it on that basis, I just don't see - again - how this batch of songs fits together. It's not quite a collection of leftovers, it's a collection of songs they themselves didn't know what to do with or how exactly to release them. They've gone for 'stick it all on one record and call it our next album' but from everything they've said and from my own perception of how the songs complement each other, this might as well be a compilation. That's not to say that some of the songs are brilliant and I'm really looking forward to them.

It's a chip under 6 mins, still fairly long for a lead single when you have the Panda tracks and (apparently) the new shorter Avey track.

Agreed what everyone's saying about the Feels-y thing. When I first heard it on the p4k stream in 2021 I was super surprised that they revived that very characteristic Feels multi-delayed guitar sound. So yeah it's vintage AC but being new and moving forward is what AC do best.

Having said THAT since it's my least fav of the boots it has the highest potential to glow up and exceed expectations. I can picture it being produced tremendously.

No two songs reeeaaally sound alike on this album when you think about it. Maybe what's exciting me most tbh. Could well end up being their most varied yet, a patchwork medieval quilt

I guess about half of the AC full lengths are stylistically inconsistent. Even some of their most acclaimed albums are all over the place, especially Sung Tongs and Strawberry Jam. And I'm all for it! The more variety, the better imho. Imagine an LP and every song sounds like, I don't know, boys latin or something, that would be boring as... wait a minute...

There’s some prime Avey yodeling in this Soul Cap intro. Would be Schweet if there was something like it in the studio version.

have to think that their studio magic is going to make soul capturer shine. i'm team SC so sign me up. is this a paperback writer type of thing, or is it on the new LP too?

Surprised to see so many folks aren't really into Soul Capturer. It sounds like a forgotten Feels b-side to me and I enjoy it. I was scratching my head over Walker being a single since the live version felt so lame to me, so the fact that the band feels confident enough in releasing Soul Capturer as a single (which was basically a weirdo tune Dave wrote randomly outside of the rest of the band) tells me they've done something really special with it.

Also, some of my favorite records are comprised of songs that don't seem to fit together at all, so I don't see what the drawback is. White Album for example

yeah i'm v curious how the production will treat 3 guitars + the hurdy and all 3 of the guys singing, plus drums and any other elements

I've been in n out of the loop on CA here ... im.guessing the person who dropped the info about SC is super reliable? They must be bc there isn't one person. who has questioned it. I'm not too mad about that song being g a single nor am I shocked by it either. They almost never release any of the top songs from their albums as singles. of course there's always exceptions. if I was to guess a 2nd single it'll either be the new unheard one or SR. Deak doesn't have a single yet and that's maybe by far his best song ever written

For an animal collective song, there's actually not too much going on on SC. Especially the drum part is just a kick drum as far as I can tell from the boots.

sure, it's just a lot of mid range stuff going on, so i just wonder how it was treated in the studio, esp since defeat sounded so good

I hope they add a whole bunch of ear candy into the mix for SC. Like you said, there's lot of room to fill since everything is pretty mid rangy so far. I can see them add a subtle synth arpeggio such as the one on whirlpool or some kind of pulsating sound that adds a bit more drive to the song.

All the sounds that are not vocals/guitar are Geo even the kick drum. Not sure if Panda originally played it but as of last summer it it was a sample triggered at the beginning.

When was this recorded I'm forgetting the timeline here. 2021 or 2022? I can't imagine it sounding all that different than the late summer 22 versions but earlier in the tour they did play it a bit different so if the album was already tracked by then it does make me wonder what the album version will sound like. At one point I hoped this song would never be recorded and it would just kind of be an eternal live staple that evolved forever.

Really hoping they've properly juiced this one up. Soul Cap live is nice but always felt more like a sketch than something fully realised (though it did sound pretty good on Blast), which is just to say that an exact copy of the live version would make for a bit of a lackluster announcement single imo. I'm sure that won't be the case and we're in for a Walker-esque switchup.

Praying that they have some extra percussion on this thing but not holding my breath because of how faithful defeat was. Maybe panda brings guiro over from reset

Recorded December 2021

Re: Soul Capturer - I love the song, though I’m surprised it’ll be the lead single. My one fear is that they’ll stick with the vocal delivery that hyper-accentuates the rhymes, which wasn’t present in the early versions and has felt a little hokey to me.

Can we quote you on that? Or is that just an average length from the times they’ve played it live?

Prester and Strung were both around the 6:30 mark!

Myanimalhome.net changed their home page to include the album title which seems to check out with album sites on Google and AC reddit.

Also some fans received these postcards today with the same title on a postcard.

I'd go check their new homepage, I don't want to spoil the title or it's promotional art for the first time you see it here.

Album Release Date:

Sept 29th, 2023

Based upon what Hisham (guy who did promo pic collage of the band) said of using elements from the covers of the bands upcoming releases (including defeat), it looks to be likely another piece by Lauren Luloff, or at least something in a similar vein. Looks like the album may be purple and orange, but it does look like the pieces from the Defeat art used are fairly filtered / toned, so who knows
