is that piano part that panda plays in the tare my face off parts an interpolation of something? super nice
damn, this is fucking beautiful
the piano + sample + noise at the end = god tier AC
"L'appartement du deuxième est meublé... Celui du 5ème a quatre pièces, cuisine et salle de bain."
They talk with an old French accent. Wondering if it comes from a 50's movie or something like that ?
just finished listening, cannot wait to (1) play very loudly in my car and (2) play very loudly in better headphones. what an amazing, transcendent remaster, really opens up Spirit for me in a way that it hasn't before.
do we know if the cd comes with a lyrics sheet or any other inserts?
I've been finding the official lyrics online so my guess is yes.
With the new lyrics, I feel like La Rapet is about taking care of a person with leprosy or something similar... very hopeless-in-spite-of-faith feeling, especially with the references to rotting and not touching and facing against the wall, being locked in the basement... reminds me of how I used to daydream about the most fucked up shit in my Catholic religion classes when I was a kid
i think the official lyrics have yet to be uploaded, it's still only the first three songs that have been updated bc of the promo picture of the lyric sheet that shows em, plus avey apparently provided the lyrics to la rapet in the old days of the forum
wasn't la rapet based on a guy de maupassant story, or am i misremembering?
People say that, but the official lyrics don't read that way to me imo. I didn't realize Avey already cleared up the lyrics. I've noticed if you Google some of the lyrics they pop up, I'm not sure from where, but as being official from Domino by David Portner. Bat You'll Fly is a great example of that, the lyrics are up somewhere ??? and they're very clearly from Avey.
i was originally disappointed with the new album cover, but now seeing the whole package (and seeing all the detail up close on the cover) i am really impressed by it.
the Avey + Panda mask theme continues throughout the entire packaging. the sleeve for A/B sides has a big Panda face and the C/D side has the big Avey mask.
there are also some highly processed pictures in the gatefold probably from the recording sessions, which is cool.
the lyrics are scribbled and had to be scaled down VERY SMALL to fit on two sleeves. the amount of lyrics each song has is kinda incredible now that i think about it, haha.
very lyrical songs.......
as for the lyrics, since they're so small what i'm gonna have to do instead of take pics is copy/paste the lyrics from genius then edit them by cross-referencing them with the official lyrics sheet

damn, so this was a bit of a labour of love but if i'd taken pics you would've had a really hard seeing the lyrics anyway...at times i had to bring the lyric sheet right up to my eyeballs.
a few notes -- this is based on what's written on the lyric sheet as opposed to what he sings. sometimes he flips lines around (i've noticed now) or like in Chocolate Girl, he switches the pronouns during the part where the boy watches the girl undress.
also, he is singing "I'm the panther" not "I'm the phantom" on "April..."
doing the lyrics has been fascinating just to notice things like that... also, the genius lyrics for Chocolate Girl in particular were wayyyyy off. otherwise Genius had it pretty solidly, but every song had mistakes that are now corrected through having the official lyrics.
In this place
There's a whole new life
A thousand chains, when the links match right
Find a name, face a faceless age
Gasp at night at your window pane
Isolate from one hundred friends
Wave an arm as your childhood ends
Turn a flash as one wild day steers
Turn a song into twenty years
In spirit they vanish
And I'll show you why.
I make a great elder in my spotted tie
If we were just dolphins in the sea at five
Cause it's hard to just kiss our
Child games goodbye
When April passes by, she thinks of playing Bach
She tells her mother, “I am not afraid”
Of dying in the bath, or swinging from a beam
She asks her mother if she's slept with strangers
The phantom was a bride who'd white out
All the Things her mother said and whip her to a stain
In autumn Goodbye leaves and December hello frost
And Mother would say daddy
“I don't know where April went"
She ran out in nature
I find the Phantom, we roll across the river
We're hiding from our suffering
I like the chases, please take off my dress
And throw it to the suffering
She ran out in nature
What'd she find?
Where'd she go?
Phantom bride
April’s home
Dad, everybody wants it
Mom, can't you see me wasting
Without a bra I let her lick around
and take me from my suffering
Forgotten knees I’m reaching for the stars
I’m begging please no suffering
She ran out in nature
Dad, everybody wants it
Mom, can’t you see me wasting?
I finally see a baby girl
I'm sorry April but you'll be fine till then I’m the panther
When I sneak around and you're on top
A frenzy April, then we ride again, I’m the panther
Watch me as I Iead the way
from infancy to grown up babies
Phantom please put on my make up
She ain’t breathing I’ll keep calling
I’m not right I’m not faking
And I’m burning and I’m shaking
April, doll, you’re disappearing
Now in death the end is nearing
April and the Phantom, they were just like lovers
Always sneaking kisses for the weekend
Everything's just okay with me, everything's just alright
April and the Phantom spoke in secret code
Until they buried Phantom by the road
Everything's just alright with me
Kid has got no friends
Tumble change, slip through the dust
as the bus pulls away from waving hands at the child stye.
I bought a comic in the mail and the sale said
"These stories will shake the sheets from off of you"
So gather 'round, just four more stops again
We'll reach our teachers' hallways in the end
Expect the foulest 'cause Dad does not allow it
I see the driver in the glass, these crowds will never pass while they're standing
There's no standing!
The five-year-olds eat with feet soiling the seats with a tantrum and short attention spans
The boy who sweats when he's calm is touching the palm of a princess
Who's crying, "Where's my baby doll!"
and Benny the thief who lost all his teeth
to his brother with the baseball
Pick a page and settle in
too fast to fret for poor Susette
who thought her legs could race the polar bear
And when they found her in the ice her eyes were sorry for
Her brother who waited for Lego time
But there's much more, just flip to forty-four
And watch the bleeding phoenix
The end's a plot twist with soldiers in the wolf mist
The bully grabs at my hands
And pushes through fans for the pages
My arms are in the air
The driver punches the gas
The bully screams, "Call that fast?", so the kids laugh
He needs attention bad
Then to the brakes, her feet slide
His head hits the side and he screams out
“Creeps, I'll take you all!”
He grabs Penny Dreadfuls
And rips them in shred-fulls when I sink down
My friends have left my side
But then there's a stop
And Sara climbs in, she asks
“Timmy, where's your horror pin?”
The bully laughs in his place
She spits in his face and says,
“Billy, you leave my boy alone!"
Everybody came out just to see me leaving
With my pennys in my hand they're glad to see I'm happy
But when the story's mine I think I'll tell it different
It's a shame to hear the sound when my pennys hit the ground
Now I want to go back home
When sight goes,
I'll lead you around the excavation
Where grass grows
And remnants of you in implication
Your breath sounds, inhaling a porch in time it’s frozen
In blue gowns, you trace along the house which you had chosen
While holding tightly
All sound is dead, so play in time and lie
When life is “son” and you can’t run, you’ll lie
When ceilings smile we’ll sleep awhile and lie
I'll take you for walks among the patients
She had a pretty dad
And she was growing out of play-school
Still she could kick and scream and play
Until she wanted to
My little chocolate girl
Her brother barely out of high school
Lived in a place where he could scream
Until he wanted to
No fuzzy tabby cat
And she could bury him in apples
or curl around a roll of cotton
'til she wanted to
But still she had to speak loud, cause hearing isn’t high among the widows
She eats in, dad picks her Sunday flowers from the garbage
Dad cries late, while drinking with the boys from Argentina
Dad prays long in hopes of something better for “the children”
Holding tightly…
All sound is dead so play in time and lie
When life is “son” and you can’t run you lie
When ceilings smile we’ll sleep awhile and lie
I’ll take you for walks among the patients
She met a pretty boy and they would dance between their elders
and she would scream until the wine she bought had settled in
My little chocolate girl, who used to love the stars from Brittin
She slept on records and hung marble jewelry from her skin
Her colors matched the room and she would twirl around the curtains
She had a head to hold her chin up when her friends let down
The kid across the street would peak around when she was changing
She would wink and he would tell his friends about his “babe”
Her mother died at home, she had saliva in her pockets
and gave a green when her last days had finally made a date
Now goodbye chocolate girl but won’t you lick a name?
and put your lanterns on across the maze so I want feast on folly
You better love the rain, who brought the strings in
And who will pop the drain cause I can’t see you
I’ll open up my brain again
didn't do Bat You'll Fly though because my eyes hurt and the written lyrics are completely different than what's on genius. the opening line is "Abby. Listen to the flick of the floss it's been five years of the sandbox" though.
Hallucinations:
It's what you see in men, does my rugged face cut scars like daggers?
Faces on the wall, we can't touch you but you move our hobby
Reach into the hall, step around the feast and find the lobby
Open up the door, see an angel and you'll lose your body
Picking out a name, stretching out on your sheets
Isabelle, Isabelle, can't you hear me I can't tell
Is the devil in the room? Is he hiding in the first drawer
Hold me dear, hold me dear, can't you feel me touch your ear
Hallucinations:
Meat was on the bone, but the children huddled and devoured
Keep them in the home, let their minds go where their bikes can't take them
Flinching finds me first, so I'll hide 'til she is in the basement
When I light the match, touching angels shadows on the ceiling
Racing 'round the room, your forehead is on fire
Isabelle, Isabelle they're all talking you're not well
Looking like a ghost, Doctors shaking their heads
Say my name, say my name can't you see that I'm to blame
(“There have been sadder days”)
Starting to Rotting and, “Pretty Angel”
Hallucinations:
Grab the preachers throat, can't you see the light within the shutters?
Who set up the ball, don't you see your dancing frees my chances?
Put me on my feet, there's an angel with a hand that’s open
Write my name in ink, send a letter to the ground and beg him
Folding all your clothes, changing all your bed sheets
Isabelle, Isabelle, you're not with me where I dwell
Drinking from your glass, smash it on the pyre
It's a shame, it's a shame don't you see me, I'm to blame
Some people's lives awake to itsy-bitsy “I'm so sorry's”
The branch breaks, you crack a window and the wind might say
"The birds are calling for you. Please don't Follow."
Pt. 1
Baby in your cradle look at me
Baby speak in rhythm now you're three
Ride your German Shepherd 'till you're five
Baby think the TV is alive
Baby spend the night out you're thirteen
Bending on a wish your candles lean
Baby bang erasers, wash the board
Think just yesterday you held the sword
Turn and see your new years wash away
You're on the floor, can you hear me troubadour?
Alvin Row
Tangled in your broken kite
It's hard to be Ben Franklin but
You’ve been entrusted with the light
November weekend, step inside
Alvin Row
We're glad to see that you can fake it
White corn grows on every side if you can’t take it
and yellow wardrobe, suits you fine
Alvin are these visions mine?
Let her do your makeup. I know.
Alvin Row
Half of them are on your side
The rest are figments, old, I picked the pigments of their skin
One dollar in the nightmare bin
Alvin Row
I watched a mime cry in his wheelchair
Brown black bear, we'll let you be until you’re famous
I told the baker's daughter that I didn't want the water
But she only likes it when I beg, so I expect she's waiting
Pt. 2
I remember the day that I walked away from the city fight
Cars like demons are Radio Runs when there's nothing on
Words slip by when I'm silent I have to let so many people down
Then the bell from the ice cream man comes to save the day
When winter comes we do no wrong where I belong
With chocolate shakes, the sun awakes, I play ping pong
The autumn clouds distort and crowd tobacco lawns
I pull the glass and trip to fast a soccer dawn
Swiftly past through an age as we unlock a stage on my horror ride
I remember the shining, the spot and the day she bled
Though I’ve never known Moses, I’ve known many noses with dots like mine
Take a drive to the Jacksonville pharmacy and pretend
That a new apartment and a heart don't make me old
Cause I’ve spied on rage and middle age so I've been told
When I'm walking on a wire with eight other Is
I’ll be sure and pick the best of the eight other sides
And when I stay shy, you stay shy dear Alvin
And when I say bye, you say bye dear Alvin
And when I say go, you say go dear Alvin
And when I say row, you say row dear Alvin
God, the EP took my breath away. Untitled #1 didn’t impress me so I didn’t know what to expect; and I forgot Panda was playing piano on Bus Travel pt. 1 and as soon as it started emotion just washed over me. I always love “acoustic versions”, so to speak, so An An Angel is really wonderful to have now.
The remaster of the actual record is giving me mixed feelings so far but I’m on the side of mostly good. Certain moments seem to hit a little less hard because I just got used to the cacophony of sound, like the end of Alvin Row. But it’s really nice to be able to hear all these new details more clearly.
Holy hell this remaster is delicious. So much I've never heard before. The agonised scream in the middle of Alvin Row??? Also those lyrics!
I may have missed something but is the EP vinyl only? Can't seem to download it anywhere?
All the physical versions come with a download card. The only place I can find a digital download is iTunes, as part of the remaster (which is what I ended up doing).

Ah cheers! I had searched iTunes for the EP title but didn't think to actually just check the remaster. I wonder why they didn't put the whole thing on Bandcamp?
Also I wanted to get the vinyl version but my record player is an exclusively out-loud affair and given her reaction to just about everything in the AC discography other than Prospect Hummer, I don't think my wife will be able to hack it.
I just gave my vinyl copy of spirit away to a random guy on the street
Need a story here
I’m moving back to MT for the summer and liquidating my entire record collection. Don’t wanna be held down by material objects and all that crap. Sold about a third of my collection to a record store by my
Work but they wouldn’t take my 2009 copy of spirit because it’s really, really beat up. Lots of scuffs and scratches and the sleeve is fucked up as well so I thought what the hell I guess I’ll find a home for it eventually. Lo and behold on my way to my job, for the first time ever, I see a dude in an anco shirt walking down the street. I immediately stopped him and gave him the record and we chatted about the Portland Avey tare show and how sick the new album is gonna be. We both think defeat is one of their best songs ever and we both think gem and I is gonna be the new single. I got his name but now I forget it lol so if you’re here on CA it was really good to meet you dude! I hope the vinyl serves you well

I’ve legit never run into a random person wearing anco merch before so the fact that I just had that vinyl on me at the time was too fucking trippy to not act upon. Basically some sort of weird miracle

I don't suppose anyone bought an extra copy of the 3LP version, or knows where it might be for sale? I slept on the purchase when it first went up, cuz funds were tight. I finally remembered yesterday, but it's out of stock from Domino. Now I'm desperate to track it down!
