So excited!!! I've recently been hospitalized because of my Crohn's disease, and it's been so nice having Tangerine Reef to look forward to this week. IDK if I can wait to listen to it first on vinyl at home. But it will be so cool experiencing it for the first time with the visuals. I'm holding out on the freebirds, unlike "Painting With." And I can look forward to my first listen too when I get out haha.

I can't wait to see how they expand upon the vibe of "Hair Cutter," it obviously flows into the next song, so it'll be like I'm finally advancing beyond the trailer for the album. If you feel me

Buxom and Coral understanding are my favourites, Coral Understanding in particular definitely sounds like something off Hollindagain. also definitely getting the John Maus vibes on Hip Sponge

Pretty good review, that. A release like this does show how absurd ascribing numbers to a record is, though.

Buxom, Coral by Numbers, and Hip Sponge were the standouts after one listen. But yeah, I definitely need the visuals and some gas for the full experience.

Maybe this is obvious, but perhaps the title Tangerine Reef is a lil nod to Tangerine Dream as well. I haven't been able to listen to the whole album yet, but what ive heard is akin to an AnCo version of the slow, trippy progressive electronic music Tangerine Dream were known for.

Tracking says it's en route from the last destination which is 3 hours away, yet it STILL isn't scheduled to deliver til Monday. At least the audio-visual collab is premiering tomorrow. Psyched!

I miss Avey's more melodic and soulful singing. Today his song melodies are just meh. Panda is on point tho. Don't hate on me. Just my opinion.

I would agree except that he's written some amazing melodies over the past fifteen months that I'm dying for him to record and release. This is deliberately abstract and drifting, but yeah, I'd also like some more affecting melodies to go with the atmosphere and sobriety, but he's decided to keep this pretty sparse instead. It'll never be my favourite record and I'm not finding it enormously exciting but it creates a particular feeling, certainly.

Eucalyptus melodies are tight and stuff he's sitting on is potentially some of his best ever imo

Coral Understanding and Airpipe are some of the craziest songs they've made since maybe oddsac. This album is really growing on me, so excited for the movie now. It sounds less and less formless with each listen, and more like very ornate, loose and patient compositions. Still not sure how I feel about the recording, opting not to go for a cleanly produced studio product does have it's pros, like lending a certain dreamlike mystery to tracks like Hair Cutter & Jake and Me. But there are a few instances, particularly in like Buffalo Tomato and Inspector Gadjet, that I think could have been amazing had they been developed more.

First thoughts:

I can't help it, but I'm not really floored by this. It's drifting too much, as if this is a recording of a spontaneous jam, but one that wasn't even that exciting, although still lovely bec it's a bloody Avey/Geo/Deaks jam. The recording is not that great either I'd say. Apart from that I love the fact that it at least is drifting again, a process that already started since MOTW. A very exciting one, but one that is mostly exciting because of the prospect, the potential of a new great era. We've already seen hints of their real genius in new songs like Defeat and it's shining through parts of this.

I'm definitely liking this, and overal really loving parts of it, although I hope they'll work on something more concentrated, more developed and ambitious. They're making so fucking much, but it all feels like side-projects atm, which is fine if they're happy with that. I will listen to - and enjoy most of - it anyway.

PS : I really love Palytoa.

Btw, this song is drifting too, but it comes from a very unique and concentrated place. Everything is in it's right place.

Initial thoughts: definitely has a texture unlike anything else in the band’s discography. Aqueous, smeared, psychedelic in a truly new way. Having a hard time recalling specific tracks, but it’s ok. It’s a soundtrack! Production is refreshingly rough around the edges but I think a little same-y from piece to piece. I get it though: the recording is meant to emulate the live performances they did of the material. Minimally treated, purposely loose and murky, like a pulsing silty tide pool. I kept thinking of the David Lynch connection. This is very dissonant, obtuse stuff. Kind of reminds me, coincidently, of Xiu Xiu’s Plays the Music of Twin Peaks record in vibe and ambiance. Almost sounds as if Avey is improvising, lyrically. The words (the decipherable ones at least) land almost like platitudes (“get you on the same page,” “now is the time,” “it was the best of times”). Still, not a soothing listen usually. Love the soundscapes, however, of “Coral Understanding,” “Airpipe,” (like a volley of alien artillery) and “Jake and Me” (the dreamiest passage here). “Hip Sponge” could almost be a lost jam from the Here Comes the Indian sessions. There is a lot of space in these songs for how chaotic and itchy they are. And how weird. I almost wish weirder. Will pair very well with a hike through the woods and a few crumbs of the ol’ Golden Teacher. Land ho!

I am pleasantly surprised by this. I did not have the highest expections. I can find things about most any of their songs and like it for the most part, but nothing really measured up to anything pre-MPP. Like I said, I like post-MPP stuff, Applesauce especially is one of my top 5 favorite AC songs at this point and I don't care what anyone says, Floridada and Golden Gals are amazing haha. but this is better than all post mpp to me

this is a random thought of mine, but the opener to the Sung Tongs show I went to, Laraaji, was also a nice surprise for me, I have been listening to him a lot since those shows. I actually hear a lot of his vibes in the new album, at certain points. I even wonder if they may have drawn a bit of inspiration from him for the new album, like as if they found out about him when originally writing this music however long ago it was, and really dug it. Second thoughts after second listen (and after watching the video with it) :

I am floored. This is beautiful.

The bass lines in Jake and Me have kind of a similar timbre to a standup bass, it makes me imagine Avey singing the song in a smoky jazz nightclub. Very fitting that it was played at the David Lynch fest.

Bummer that it's getting bad reviews...part of me wonders if people don't know how to react with AC releasing their first major non-pop-centric album in a loooong time. I've been enjoying it even without seeing the visuals yet. I feel like there's some texture here that has yet to have been explored in the band's past releases and it stands out as something unique amongst them. Track-by-track breakdown:

1. Hair Cutter - Not much to say that probably hasn't been said. This almost sounds like a reworked folk song with the way Avey sings some of the lines.

2. Buffalo Tomato - Now this sounds like AC doing a soundtrack, the way the track races with those arpeggios. The vocals here maybe don't do as much for me as the live version, though, where I felt they hit harder (demoitis was bound to occur somewhere).

3. Inspector Gadget - Love that deep guitar groove throughout this one. Coupled with Avey's vocalizing and everything else going on, it makes for something dark and mysterious. Unique for AC imo.

4. Buxom - Those underwater intermittent synth arpeggios! This is the track that probably provides the water texture the most for me. Aside from that, everything is just so chilled out and pleasant. One of my favs.

5.Coral Understanding - Starts out sounding like it could maybe even something from Danse Manatee. Love the parts where Avey sings his heart out alongside that flutey sounding synth.

6. Airpipe - Another soundtracky one with lots of chirpy sounds and guitar. Makes me wonder what's going on in the film here. Love how psychedelic it gets in the last 1/3 as it transitions into...

7. Jake and Me - So dark and pretty and kind of devastating. The trebly guitar almost echoing Avey's voice is great, especially coupled with those smooth low guitar(?) sounds. I just wish it was longer. Blissful ending.

8. Coral By Numbers - Not much to say about this one as it's not a particular favorite.

9. Hip Sponge - Totally agree with what was said about this sounding like a John Maus track. It's almost like ambient punk mixed with primal Animal Collective. A handful of fun vocal melodies throughout.

10. Coral Realization - AC's take on...drone metal? Sounds like imminent doom...another I'll be curious to see the visuals for.

11. Lundsten Coral - Nice relaxing break after the last track. Almost sounds like it could've been a Water Curses b-side.

12. Palythoa - This one sticks out as something different from the rest. It's hard to put my finger on it. The synth drones? The register Avey is singing in? I don't know, but it's another one of my favorites.

13. Best of Times - The kind of joyful closing track Avey is really good at. There are synth fireworks going off in the background and it gets fun when the percussion comes in. Great closer.

some passages in the middle of this are so forlorn and sad... it sounds like Avey's looking out over a vast kingdom of ruin and lamenting all the devastation, which kind of fits the endangered coral theme. honestly I'm super impressed with how well they nailed the target aesthetic here
