Anyone else feel like its been too long?

The momentum and excitement is being sucked out of it a bit.

I'm sure it'll be right back the moment it actually drops but I've kind of stopped thinking about and listening to it. Its like smelling a meal that you'll never get to taste. At first its tantalising and then after a while you just get annoyed that you're never gonna eat it.

hey! i saw AC at the music box village in 2018 and tripped on a banana peel on the way out of the venue and have been in a coma for almost 5 years. anyway defeat was so incredible i'm sure avey prioritized releasing it right away. which album is it on, cows on hourglass pond, tangerine reef, time skiffs? lmk cause i'm dying to listen, thanks!

keep in mind defeat was recorded in dec 2021 - i'm not fond of the tone of the keys in this version, especially in the beginning part. but i'm not too worried, cause i think it was recorded at a good point in time and the live versions don't necessarily reflect what they did in the studio

“Defeat” is such a journey. Been listening to Bibio’s “Phantom Brickworks II” lately, which has that arc—you visit so many emotions by the end of the song you’re like, “what just happened?”

Listening to the Music Box version now, it does feel like Avey was kinda rushing through the lyrics in the first and third MBV sections. I think they were smart to slow down those parts (though I also think they stretched them out too far in total length). But the middle section at Music Box is so superior because of those strings. I'm hoping hoping hoping they bring in guest musicians for that middle part.

Speaking of, I keep thinking about the lyric, “We were the good news / now I’m all out.” Christ is known as the “good news.” This era has some old world gnostic vibes, doesn’t it? Prester John (Medieval Christian legend), Kings (a book of the Bible), Dragon Slayer (Saint Michael, anyone?). The idea of defeat is at the center of faith—Christ’s crucifixion, his whole essence, was/is “victory in defeat.” He impoverished himself. The cross is his trophy.

the questions is purely hypothetical as a way of understanding how much people value the song on its own

I really like the newest version of Defeat personally, but that subcarrier video kinda bugs me. Feel like they did it much better during other performances from that tour. Avey's voice feels kinda off/is mixed too loud or something.
