Dude, they need to play fireworks again. They unchained banshee, fireworks waits in the wings. I need to be in the crowd. I need to hear the aeee ahh oohh sample. Why does jam just get fucked like this? Safer, cuckoo, never played after their official release. For rev green played once, and its one of their most popular songs. They will play in the city that reads before they play cuckoo cuckoo again. Is that fucked up?

now I wanna make a list of the songs never played again after their initial origin era. might make me sad tho. Also a list of ones never played at all?

But the ones that come to mind: Turn into Something, Cuckoo, Chores, Safer, Lion(? maybe it was actually...), From a Beach, MOST of CHZ, ALL of PW at this point... yeah. tragic... Many ST and pre-ST obvs but those almost feel a little different and set-up-dependent. Or when those early ones do come back its a "re-work" instead of just them doing an older song again (is there a difference? Sprit/Ark and ST songs def seem to get "re-worked" whereas post-feels stuff just kinda gets played and might be a lil different but not drastically.

I think they played lion at a couple centipede shows, and they def played chores during the merriweather era. Safer feels lost to time sadly, my friend told me about a time he saw them during the centipede era and someone in the crowd yelled out safer, and Avey was like "safer?!" in this voice like he was bewildered someone would even request it lol.

Chores during MPP? Shit yeah ok, panda used to do a version of it going into a weird solo version of I Think I Can. And c'mon aveyz you gotta know we love safer (AND cuckoo).

The whole FBK album has gotten more replay other than I think I can, thinking of that one. But where's From a Beach, the absentee FBK track!

They don't seem to revive unreleased.songs especially, but Fickle Cycle is one of the deeper ones they've done in a while, so b sides and ep tracks are certainly on the table.

From a Beach had a resurgence via DJ sets (would love to see it live or recorded though)

Rev Green didn’t make an appearance until the last 2 of 3 shows from the 2019 tour, would be wild if they brought out something similar tonight at Hopscotch.

Technically, and i say that with great pain in my heart, they did play a version of safer at a DJ set. But not during a live set tho

I remember hearing Safer live not knowing what it was, I left the show trying to figure out if it was a track on anything they had released already and was bummed I couldn’t’ find it. First time I played the Peacbone Ep I was so happy to hear it again.

during the painting with era i wanted them to play in the singing box so bad, i still think it would have been utterly perfect for that sound and setup

Avey did play Turn Into Something during a solo set that was streamed last year, along with Doggy and La Rapet, so that one has been revisited

Yeah it was softer and a little slower. The vocals were more gently sung and there was no autotune. I’ll try to get my boot up tomorrow, it sounds ok

Hasn’t Dave admitted that SJ is his least favorite AC record? It was a fraught recording sesh, his marriage was falling apart, etc. Guess I can understand why a lot of those tunes aren’t getting “the royal treatment.”

I never knew that. A shame if so because it's probably their best album all in all. Nine distinctly brilliant songs, and Safer.

The first 3 tracks of water curses were recorded during SJ sessions too. Scrapped from the album but used for the EP. All those songs are top tier. Especially Street Flash. Great outpouring of material for that record.

Real Don't Believe the Pilot vibes off the end of Sea of Light. And then the last line is like College obviously. No surprise it came out of the Sung Tongs tour, delighted it stuck around. Those twinkly synths at the end, taking us down to Atlantis baby

here's the Raleigh boot. Sound isn't great at all but better than I expected from an iphone. A few skips from when I took videos and I didn't get the beginning of Unsolved Mysteries or the end of Purple Bottle.

Hope you all enjoy. If someone thinks they can clean it up be my guest

Thanks again for recording! Definitely sounds better than that Cincinnati vid, which was the only recording we had of a couple of these songs. Love what they've done with Kings, feels way more composed and purposeful now. And I'm glad they've slowed Strangers down, always thought that melody was too good for how fast the 2019 version flew by.

[Strawberry Jam] was a struggle to get through. Josh especially was having a really hard time. That recording process was the first time we ran into a situation where we weren’t completely satisfied with what was happening. It’s strange for us because that record is looked at very fondly, and it’s a favourite for a lot of people. There are some songs that I’m proud of, but as a collection and as a lingering experience, Strawberry Jam is my least favorite Animal Collective record.

been mostly avoiding the boots but I just had to hear what they did with Kings, and it sounds so much better without the autotune. it has this primal, emotional purity that reminds me of young prayer/much earlier AC, kind of an anomaly in this set of songs when the rest sound like a completely new direction for them. for that reason I doubt it's on the album but I'll hold onto hope

anyway thanks to all who recorded and shared!

Interesting that Piggy Knows only showed up in Cincinnati. Almost certainly a coincidence but it is kind of funny given the city's marathon

Interesting you say that—I’ve had that same feeling about a lot of these new tunes. I hear a lot of Sung Tongs-esque harmonies in “Defeat,” “Soul Capturer,” etc. Maybe it’s the return of guitars and Noah’s kit, but I think you’re right—there’s also something in these songs that harkens to the embryonic years of the band. Something primal. Maybe something subconscious. I love Centipede Hz and Painting With, but they definitely sound zeitgeist-y, like a band consciously striving to push the envelope to meet the times, or to deconstruct the sonics and songwriting that shot them to stardom. There’s something refreshingly dispassionate—something cool—about these newies. Maybe that’s the “dad rock” vibe some people are hearing.
