Not sure how much this treads on Repainting With's toes but I've been listening to heaps of the PW era bandcamp boots lately and thought it'd be fun to put together a live version of Painting With (including b-sides) using these great sounding recordings. Can't help but imagine how incredible the album could have been if it had sounded like this... Anyway, hook in if you're interested:

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE - PAINTING LIVE:

1. FloriDada (College St. Music Hall, 2017)
2. Hocus Pocus (KCRW, 2016)
3. Vertical (The Ritz, 2016)
4. Lying in the Grass (College St. Music Hall, 2017)
5. Hounds Of Bairro (College St. Music Hall, 2017)
6. The Burglars (Fonda Theatre, 2016)
7. Natural Selection (The Ritz, 2016)
8. Gnip Gnop (Fonda Theatre, 2016)
9. Bagels in Kiev (Fonda Theatre, 2016)
10. On Delay (College St. Music Hall, 2017)
11. Peacemaker (College St. Music Hall, 2017)
12. Spilling Guts (Fonda Theatre, 2016)
13. Summing the Wretch (College St. Music Hall, 2017)
14. Golden Gal (KCRW, 2016)
15. Kinda Bonkers (College St. Music Hall, 2017)
16. Recycling (The Ritz, 2016)

EDIT: Have added time stamps now.

Foxtrot you need to change the url to a proper youtube.com one instead of youtu.be

Speaking of embedding youtube videos, in case there's anyone who still hasn't heard my Because/Banshee Beat mashup from like a decade ago I uploaded it to youtube

There’s a rym list of the same name. Been using it for years pretty sure it’s got everything up until zushi. Been working on adding more bootlegs to rym, for some reason the tonic show wasn’t on there so I added that last night. Foxtrot I’m pretty sure repainting with and some of the other stuff like that is in their bootlegs page on rym too, if you want me to add Painting Live I’d be more than willing

I love Eucalyptus and wouldn't want anything taken away from it but I sometimes imagine if Avey had used just a few of those songs from the same era that feel like they fit the MoTW vibe and fleshed things out to a full album?

Imagine a 'Meeting Of The Eucalyptus Waters' LP with a track list something like this:

Blue Noses
Man Of Oil
Season High
Melody Unfair
Amazonawana/Anaconda
Coral Lords
Selection Of A Place (Rio Negro)

7 tracks, 51 minutes.

Very cool MOTW idea - I'm gonna create a playlist and see how I like it.

One benefit would be trimming Eucalyptus down a smidge. I love the album and listen to it a lot. But I rarely get all the way through its 62 minutes.

Okay I made some slight changes and imagine the project of continuing to tweak this playlist is going to unlock Eucalyptus for me but here's what I've got that I've really been enjoying quite a bit so far:

1. Blue Noses (I suspect this one will go first, even though I love it 13 minutes is a lot of time)
2. Man of Oil
3. Season High
4. Roamer
5. Melody Unfair (Panda Bear remix from essence of Eucalyptus)
6. Amazonawana/Anaconda (this one might also sub out too instead of blue noses idk)
7. Coral Lords
8. Selection of a Place (rio)

thank you thank you thank you foxtrot

Was listening to this grateful dead show from '87 last night - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzuYS_I8dpo
and it occurred to me that early 2010s AC is kind of their 80s dead era...

With the run of releases CHz -> Slasher Flicks -> PBVSGR -> PW, I feel like these albums/live eras are characterised by a wall-of-sound, all-gaps-filled approach, and avey's stuff especially leaning into his intricate curly melodies.

-CHz I think is the closest sonically and also lines up with the band playing the biggest venues of their career, leading to the maxed out sounds to fill those venues, similar to how the dead's sound changed as the venues they played got bigger and bigger.
-Slasher Flicks really feels like a second chapter to the chz sound, and interesting in that it's the most straightforward "rock band" setup any of the ac guys had played in up to that point.
-PBVSGR yeah it clearly sounds nothing like the dead but I think the flat dynamic profile of the album is enough to fit it into this theory. plus it has to be considered as a stepping stone to painting with, where I feel noah was much more on the same page as dave compared to chz.
-Painting with packs everything so densely there's no room to breathe, and the band's melodic chops just go insane with these songs. I look at the vocals in floridada or the burglars and can see a throughline to garcia's soloing in the 80s, just notes upon notes flying out faster than you can react to them

any thoughts on this? am I way off, or failing to consider something else?

What is wrong with the PW song Vertical. Like why does the chorus seemingly skip a beat. Sounds fucking bad. I get that it might fit with the lyrics, like it's about being disoriented or a audio take on what vertigo might feel like.

But like it doesn't work. It sounds wrong. It's my main issue with PW now

Very cool interpolation. I don’t know the Dead well enough to offer anything of substance, but I enjoy this kind of take. I like your point about the size of the venues and its effect on the size of the band’s sound then. Hadn’t made that connection. In their earliest incarnations, the Skiffs and IIN? songs felt very “small” to me. Interesting that so many of them were birthed in a very intimate setting.

I just relistened counting along and you’re honestly wrong about it sorry. What you’re describing doesn’t exist. Are you talking about the four quick high pitch woodblocks at the end of each bar? Theres also a kick that happens right before the kick on the 1. But it all lines up musically…
Are you talking about how the beginning of the real gassy synth at the start of each chorus sounds kind of out of tune?

We're definitely in an AC bubble. I remember listening to the indiecast episode on Time Skiffs they said Painting With dropped and no one really noticed. Struck me as harsh. But they also posited if Skiffs came out after MPP it would've cemented AC with a larger audience. Not even sure if I see it that way but

There's a pretty cool poster for sale on eBay right now. It's from the summer 2007 Euro tour. These were some of the earliest MPP shows and lots of classic bootlegs were made on this tour: The Coronet, La Maroquinerie, MIDI Festival...

This is a pretty cool piece of AC history. Kinda pricey but I figured I'd share it here in case somebody was interested. :metal
